My 6 year-old boy liked this book, but my 8 year-old dughter thought it boring … and so did I. My boy said it taught him that if we don’t like something but we still give it a try, it could end up being fun or good, which was the message of the book. He also said that first grade at Appleville Elementary was more like daycare than real school because the kids just ran in the school instead of lining up. We all agreed the setting lacked the authority of a learning institution, which my kids are ...more

Everyone was excited about the first day of school and the very first day of grade one. Everyone, that is, except Carlos. Carlos liked kindergarten and wished that he didn’t have to go to grade one.

Throughout the first day Carlos was quiet. Everyone else was happy to talk during sharing time but Carlos still wasn’t sure he liked grade one. The next day Carlos was in for a surprise. His teacher said that there would be a new addition to the class. Someone that would make them all happy.

This chapter book is all about Carlos's difficulty adjusting to the transition from kindergarten to first grade. Carlos makes it with the support of his friends, an understanding first grade teacher, and the arrival of a class pet (Carlos LOVES animals). Sweet, simple beginning chapter book, great for kids who are making the transition from easy readers.

First Family book club with 2 1st graders. It went better than I expected. The kids remembered the plot (granted it's not complicated, but sometimes they are less attentive when they read). They did great at answering questions. And it was easy to ask questions about because they are 1st graders and it was quite relevant to their lives.

Case Family third book group book, definitely the best discussion. The boys could relate well to this since they are in first grade.
