This is a decent book. There's not a whole lot of new information here, but I really like some of the questions she poses, such as, "How does your child learn other things?" This made me think about how to match my expectations to my son's history of learning. When it comes to physical things, he takes a while, likes to observe a lot first, be cautious about it, and then he practices, practices, practices, and does it really well. I think this book encourages one to give thought to thi...more

There really isn't much in this book that is new or unique. I've read most of the ideas in this book elsewhere (other books or websites). The information is sound, though, and it's nice to have in one place.

Typical of Elizabeth Pantley, the tone of the book is knowledgeable without being condescending, and it's laid out nicely. It's a quick, uncomplicated read, and a good introduction to potty training. Not worth owning in my opinion, but a worthwhile check-out from the library.

It has some good ideas to make potty-training seem more fun, BUT I thought it was annoying that she doesn't prescribe much to potty-training your kids before 2 yrs old. In that sense, it wasn't all that helpful to me. But if you're already in the midst of potty-training your toddler and you have run into problems, this book might be a good jumping off point.

I checked this out from the library because I like Elizabeth Pantley's sleep book (The No-Cry Sleep Solution for Toddlers and Preschoolers). As with the other one, I like her writing style. She shares her ideas in a helpful way without coming across like a know-it-all.

This book has a lot of good general ideas, but no specific plan. She encourages you to come up with your own potty-training plan and implement it with patience. She did discuss a few potty-training issues I hadn't c...more

Well formatted. Easy to read and get finer points

Along the same lines as mt thinking.
Take away message:
Two magic indicator for toilet training success:
~teachers positive and supportive attitude
~teachers kind and understanding patience

This is a great book that really helped me to be patient with my son when he was learning to use the potty. It had many great ideas about potty training & I'll be referring back to it with each of my kids.

I was glad not to have found a strict potty training regiment in this book. I was just looking for basic ways to get started and appreciated this book for the ideas and flexibility it allows.

Nothing very exciting or different about this book. Full of tips, most of which I have read or heard before. Might be good a starting point when beginning potty training.

Just started this one...it's a breath of fresh air after the very unrealistic 'do it in a day' books & techniques out there. Let's just say that Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a potty-trained child!

Finished this awhile ago, but am still referring to it mentally. We've had way more success taking some of these ideas. Making a potty poster together with inspirational photos of her going through the process and then tracking the progress on a chart, rewarding for staying dry...more

Here, finally, is a book that has proper modern ideas about when and how to start helping your little one to learn to use the toilet. Good ideas on how to handle unwanted advice/criticism. Things to do if "training" stalls or you have "setbacks". How to motivate kids who aren't interested. How night time dryness and daytime dryness are separate issues due to the physiology of children. This book should be recommended reading for every person involved in the care and welfare o...more

I'm a fan of Elizebeth Pantley (No Cry Sleep Solution) so that being said I do like this book. I'm only about 1/2 way through, and I haven't read anything amazingly helpful yet. I knew a lot of what I've already read. It all comes down to getting your kid to pee and poo in a little bowl as calmly and stress-free as possible. I do like her approach though...laid back and realistic. I like the Potty Poster idea in chapter 5. We'll of course be making one of those crafts. I've ordered my garb onli...more

I had to figure out how to potty train my sister with this book. My mom was at her wits end.

I would say this book is more action-driven than character-driven. Just kidding. I liked Pantley's approach to sleep and her potty-training approach is similar: gentle, slow and geared toward your child's personality. I guess I won't know how effective it is for a while, but this is everything a parenting how-to book should be: simple, repetitive (for the sleep-deprived), encouraging and reasonably short. She also includes a helpful chapter on bathroom safety.

Quick, breezy read that covers lots of tricks and tips for parents that are embarking on potty training. Very well organized; had stuff I knew and stuff I found new and interesting. Didn't like the random quotes from parents interspersed throughout the text, like so many Key Points, and Did You Know? boxes endemic of modern text books. Otherwise, solid book; highly recommended for parents who feel frustrated or stuck in their potty training efforts.

I really liked this book. It confirmed a lot of stuff we were doing and gave me some ideas on things we can try. I think I have an independent child who doesn't like to slow down, but we'll keep being patient with him! I think that's the best message of the book--this may take time, go at the pace of your child, and above all be patient and enjoy the time, because it is just another stage in the wonderful (and yes, sometimes trying) world of parenting.

I didn't feel so talked down to in this one. She offers a lot of solutions for common potty training problems with out being condescending. And I like picking and choosing, so props to her for offering a lot to pick and choose from. I got some pretty good ideas about toddler development as it relates to potty training, and how I can work with that.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because it didn't address my issue, which is that my toddler never, and I mean never, tells me when she has to go. Supposedly, this is normal, but I wanted reassurance or guidance on how to proceed. Otherwise, this is a fantastic book and a definite must-read for before and during potty training.
