girl loved by geeks. How can you not love a character that is loved by people who secretly drive her insane?

KJ Miller is a nice girl. She's nice to everyone. She doesn't have a mean bone in her body.

Until she meets Tama Gold. And becomes friends with her. The popular girl. The girl who teaches her how to "stand up" for herself. Or, basically, more or less, teaches her how to be mean!

KJ Miller. How to describe KJ? Well, there's the obvious. She's a geek magnet. She draws some geeky undesirables close to her. Fred. Glenn. Andy. Perhaps because of all the buzzing geeks near her, KJ is not quite as popular as she'd like to be. She's not in the outer rings of the social strata, but she's far from being "in" with the in crowd of beautiful people. With great power comes great responsibility. KJ now has some power at least when it comes to the drama folks. And this new-found power has brought someone new to KJ's life: Tama, Tama Gold. And Tama has something KJ wants more than anything: power and sway over KJ's crush, Cameron. KJ loves Cameron. And Tama, well, Tama sees that as her "in." As the "star" of the show, Tama, wants--no, needs--KJ to be on her side.

Tama easily agrees to setting KJ and Cameron up. Knowing that by 'befriending' KJ, the power to rule the show, rule the production, would be within her reach. After all, boys can be distracting.

The first rule Tama sets for her new best friend is that KJ has to stop being nice to the geeks, to the nobodys. She had to start being mean, being firm, being direct. KJ needed to cut free and clean from those holding her back. Who would want to date her if all her friends were dorks and geeks?

There is one person, however, that KJ still listens to. Robbie. The male lead of the play. Robbie. A guy she sees as being so wonderfully himself. He didn't hang out with the cool people, the beautiful people. But that was his choice. And that choice makes all the difference to KJ. She sees him as anything but a geek. Robbie wants Tama. KJ agrees. This requires much plotting together. This cozy together time that is oh-so-predictable.

If Geek Magnet has a flaw it is that it is ultra-predictable. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure some folks will find it enjoyable and satisfying. To me, as an adult, I found KJ a bit too self-absorbed. KJ wasn't exactly shallow. Far from it in some areas. KJ's life isn't easy. She has an alcoholic father, a mother in denial, and a younger brother that is absent-though-present. (It's weird how many scenes this brother is in, yet he never made an impression.) While KJ's relationship hate-and-angst filled relationship with her father takes up some space, the rest of her family just fades into the backdrop.

The romance. Well. I thought it lacked a bit. I thought Robbie and KJ definitely had some chemistry. But, predictably so, they were almost the last ones to know it. And the resolution, the closing scenes where they're drawn together...well, they technically get the job done, but I was hoping for a bit more fireworks.

Where Geek Magnets might pick up some fans is in the drama department. For readers who have a love for drama, for theatre, for musicals, for Grease in particular...I think this one might work better. It does spend a good majority of time behind-the-scenes pulling together a musical production. Actors. Directors. Props. Costumes. Dress rehearsals.

I think other readers would probably like this one better than I did.(less)

Geek Magnet has been one of my most favorite books. When I walked into the library for the first time and saw this book i think i ran over about five people to reach this book and i'm so glad i got it for it has shown me that even the toughest problems can have a silver lighting. The two main characters in my book are KJ Miller and Tama Gold. Both of these girls go to West High High School. They befriend each other during Drama practice when Tama finds out who KJ likes. These two girls are fairly different, Tama Gold is a rich, skirt wearing, drama star. While KJ is the stage manager, tomboy, not so rich girl. In my opinion, KJ Miller was most interesting and entertaining to read about because I was able to relate to KJ more then Tama, so I could tell how she was feeling through out the story. Also because KJ wasn't one of the wanna be characters, and at first she doesn't really care about what other people think of her, whats most important to her is what she thinks of her self.

I would recommend this book to girls that like tension and chick-flicks. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes tension because this is the type of book that leaves you wondering whats going to happen next, and makes you want to keep reading and reading. I would also recommend this book to anyone that enjoy chick-flicks because this book is mainly about a girl who tries to find true love, and encounters some obstacles along the way. This book is also about how KJ finally has the guts to ask out the guy shes been dreaming of since the 5th grade, but things don't go the way she plans. She realizes that shes in love with someone else. That is the type of audience I would recommend this romantic, dramatic,"Geek Magnet" book to.

Finally, a book I not only enjoy, but also, teaches a really good (and relatable) lesson

Geek Magnet was a funny and cute novel that teens should find relatable to their own life. It is about a girl named KJ who is worshipped by the geeks at her school. Although she appreciates their admiration, she is also embarassed that the school views her as a 'geek magnet'(hence the title). KJ befriends Tama Gold, the 'popular girl' who aids her in getting the geeks to go away. She becomes mean, ignoring her previous friends, all in an effort to impress a guy and rid of her title.

I liked this book so much. I know their are flaws and a review should have some criticism. But I don't really care. This book was just too awesome because ...

5 (of the 1000) Good Things about Geek Magnet

~ It's funny. I laughed at many of the conversations KJ had with the geeks and the book never failed to interest me. I don't believe I was bored for even a second.

~ It's realistic. The ending isn't cliche and neither is the romance or the problems in this book. KJ doesn't automatically become the Queen Bee of the school, she gradually changes. I have noticed that many YA authors have rushed their characters too much and change them so drastically in a mere few pages. Geek Magnet does not do that. I can believe it is a like a real high school because kids are mean but there was no stereotypical scenes in this novel.

~ I loved the main character. Whenever you hate the main character, it makes it hard to enjoy the novel. So I am glad that I liked KJ. She was like any other teenage girl. She wasn't whining about her problems all the time, she actually used her brain. And she's considerate of others feelings (even if she does get brainswashed). You can really see why the geeks like her so much. Her character was nicely developed.

~ I found the plot to be at a good pace and cleared up any confusions I may have had. The writing was good and the details were nice. The author didn't leave you to just imagine what it would be like, she gave us some information. And I have to admit, I loved the story.

~ The author's message. There were so many great things to take from this book. It is about accepting yourself and not letting your peers rule your desision. Being 14-years-old, I have recently experienced peer pressure. It's terrible because you want to do something that your friends and peers don't. And in order to fit in, to feel accepted, you conform. After reading Geek Magnet, I learned much about what conforming to society really does to you and why it is better to be yourself. And the message was not corny and boring. The author incorporated it with humor so it was light yet inspiring.

I did like Geek Magnet. It was funny, light-hearted and very moving. Be yourself because there is only one of you!(less)

Geeks, thespians, academics….and did I mention geeks? Cause this book is filled with them. Short, tall, frumpy, thin there are girl geeks and boy geeks. At the center of it all is KJ, a relatively popular girl who isn’t afraid to befriend anyone. What I love most about her is she’s not a status monger or judgmental. She has her moments of bad behavior, just like every other teen, and she isn’t always kind to the people around her but in the grand scheme she’s no mean girl. Have I mentioned yet...more Geeks, thespians, academics….and did I mention geeks? Cause this book is filled with them. Short, tall, frumpy, thin there are girl geeks and boy geeks. At the center of it all is KJ, a relatively popular girl who isn’t afraid to befriend anyone. What I love most about her is she’s not a status monger or judgmental. Have I mentioned yet that there is a cute boy? Well, there totally is. In fact, there are a couple of them. Naturally you have your usual jock — the adonis of the school that all the girls pine for, but then there’s the not so typical cute boy. The best friend, the one that’s not afraid to be himself, even if that himself is a theatre geek wrapped up in a rock star persona. Voila, romantic comedy ensues.

The characters are totally what makes this book a great read. The best part of Geek Magnet was definitely the geeks. KJ was surrounded by a bevy of boys who didn’t quite fit in. What I absolutely adored about it was that she was genuinely accepting of them all. She saw in them true friends and focused on their good qualities as opposed to distancing herself for fear of being branded a geek herself. That made her a strong character worthy of spending time with.

The plot is straight-forward but I wouldn’t say it’s amazingly unique. I can’t say that much about it surprised me. But I’ll also say that having a twisty-turny edge of my seat mystery read wasn’t what I went into Geek Magnet expecting. I wanted a relatively light read that mixed it up with moments of angst and that is exactly what I got. Amongst the angst there were good lessons about friendship, family dynamics, handling alcoholism and dealing with the stress of being a teen with a less than conventional home life. It wasn’t preachy nor overbearing but added just the right amount of tension to the book. I can’t say that the romantic triangle did all that much for me. It was clear where KJ was going to end up pretty early on and frankly if it had gone any other way I wouldn’t have liked the book as much as I did. The romantic element didn’t detract from the book though and I could see where girls who like to swoon over emo-ish boys would be quite taken with it all. For me, it was just kinda there.

I guess one of the reasons why KJ usually gets surrounded by the geeks is because she's too used to being nice to everyone else. I think she should start convincing herself to tell these thoughts out loud and stand up for herself. She definitely deserves her own privacy.

There I was scouring the "New Releases" shelf at the library when I bright pink cover caught my eye. [Ooooo shiny!:]
When I pulled it out, to my surprise it was Geek Magnet (and also to my surprise the geeky guy on the cover looked an awfully lot like a certain person I know-spooky).
From the beginning of the book I knew I would rate it 4 BLTs. The characters were funny, KJ's emotions were very relatable-especially her homelife problems-and the the chapters were set up in scenes like a production. Speaking of productions, amidst KJ's problems she was also the stage manager for Grease, which was a great addition to the book. Though the end was fairly predictable, Geek Magnet did manage to keep me on the edge of my seat. KJ kept making wrong turns and creating the perfect mess. I was mad along with her, frustrated with her, happy with her, knew what she was going through-what a great relatable character KJ is, huh?
TINY SPOILER........
I can also that Tama Gold just burns my toast! Boy what a brat, and thankgoodness KJ turned out to be a smart girl after all. The best part about Geek Magnet was forgiveness and that being "popular" is not important.
Okay, now I can truthfully say I Am a Geek. After all, we ARE the smart ones.......

4 STARS: Mild crude humor, family violence, references to teen drinking, and mild language. Approprate for teenagers fourteen and up.

So, this is the story of a girl, KJ, who is a geek magnet. The geeks flock to her and she can't seem to escape, not even to catch the eye of The Hot Guy of the School, Cameron. I absolutely loved this book!!! This hilarious and heartwarming tale is about KJ Miller, the geek pied piper, God's gift to geekdom, the drum major in the geek parade. Ok, first review ever, but I just couldn’t NOT do it, at least for this one. So where was I? Ah yes…No! From the very start there was something wrong with it, I just couldn’t get what until after the first few chapters. The intro was interesting, but it merely hid the horror of what was within.

Our dear heroin was one of the most unlikable girls I’ve ever read about. The only few people I liked were 2 of the geeks aka Andy and Fred and the “original guy” Robbie who also has problems with figuring people out, the shocker!

For a girl that wasn’t all that popular or pretty (her very own words), she sure attracts lots of male attention, from both the popular and unpopular ones, but maybe that was due to her gianormous boobs. Except for attracting the constant attention of Glenn and another moron, I could just couldn’t figure out why they were even part of the story not to mention on every freaking page, her boobs did this her boobs did that. It made the story even worse.

And for one thing, I understand the thing about her dysfunctional family with her dad and everything, but being huddled up in fright in her room every day, fearing his yelling wrath is not that big a reason to be scared, especially when it was quite emphasized that he never hit any of them, except yelling a freaking lot. Is that truly a reason to be scared of someone that much? Oh no… he’s gonna yell at us! Run for your lives!

Maybe I’m making too much of a fuss, but the story itself has so many loopholes and flaws and on top of that almost all the characters not being very likable, especially the main one, our very dear KJ Miller, that it was a chore to finish it. The whole thing was also very much a cliché. The only reason I read it front to back was so I wouldn’t have another book on my head that I didn’t finish, but that was all. Thus this post was created in order for me to rant of how miserable I was even reading it. So thank you Kieran Scott, but no thank you. This…was a dud!

A cute story.
About Friendship, Family, and Love.
Very different from what I used to read. Instead of chapters, there are Acts and Scenes.

The synopsis on the back cover of the book made me read it. There's something interesting about it, and don't forget the name: KJ :)

I had not heard a lot concerning this book, probably because it's a few years old, but I saw it on sale online, so I picked it up on a whim. The story sounded cute enough and I thought the cover was adorable so I purchased it. All things considered, I am glad I had a chance to read this book.

The story centers around KJ, a high school junior who was just given the job of stage manager for her school's musical production of Grease. I think a lot of people can relate to KJ, I certainly can. There are a lot of teen books out there about "mean girls" and 'frenemies" and whatnot; but KJ is entirely unique in this market - she is a nice girl. In fact, she is too nice. She cannot be mean to anyone and therefore attracts the unwanted attention of the school geeks. I love the idea of this, because this really happens. I was one of those girls in high school, not to the extent of KJ, but I could not make someone feel bad either.

Anyways, on with the story. The problem arises when Resident popular girl, who happens to be playing Sandy, takes KJ under her wing. Tama tries to set her up with KJ's longtime crush Cameron, but Tama declares that the geeks have to go. She tries to teach KJ how to repel the geeks and how to be mean. Now of course, drama ensues and KJ begins to question who she is becoming. People begin to get angry with the new KJ, but a select few stand by her side.

One of which is her new friend, Robbie. You see, the two of them developed a friendship because KJ agreed to help Robbie get Tama interested in him. However, their bond soon grows and KJ really begins to trust and rely on Robbie.

The geeks are also brilliantly and hilariously written. There are three main geeks that kind of stalk KJ throughout the book - Andy, Glenn and Fred. Andy is incredibly smart and logical. Everything he does has some kind of scientific backing. He is also extremely into health foods. He is constantly trying to get KJ to eat weird foods. Then, there is Glenn. Glenn is my least favorite type of Geek. He is super touchy-feely. We all know people like that. He seems to have no idea about the concept of a personal bubble and is constantly saying inappropriate things to KJ. Finally, we have Fred. Fred is chubby next door neighbor. He is extremely sweet and would do anything for her. Unfortunately, he is exactly socially graced and he often embarrasses himself and those around him.

Honestly, the only problem I had with Geek Magnet, is that it was rather predictable. The plot was not surprising in the slightest, but it was still well written. The characters are charming enough that it is still an enjoyable read, even when you know what is coming.

Geek Magnet was a quick and enjoyable read that is perfect for a lazy day. It is easy to get into, but isn't exactly hard to process. It isn't the best book I've ever read in this genre, but it was certainly entertaining.(less)

I have to say that Geek Magnet had more serious moments than I initially expected. Those moments helped to create depth in the character of KJ, who was a bit shallow at times. The book was a little on the predictable side, but that’s okay. It’s a light, fun read that will really appeal to all of the Gleeks out there. The ending was satisfying and showed that KJ learned something throughout the course of the book. Not all of her issues were resolved, but she learned to embrace her true self and the people who she could really count on.

To view it, click here. i have mixed feelings regarding this book. on one hand i understand how frustrated kj feels trying to be nice to guys who likes her even though their behavior can be quite rude and off putting. but i didnt like the way she would just get angry when she's had it. it is like she becomes a mini version of her drunk dad whom she despises very much which is ironic. but the difference is that kj apologizes immediately after she realizes she is wrong while her dad is too far gone to change.

another person i didn't like is kj's mom who tolerated her husband's verbal abuse and even makes excuses for him. im glad she finally woke up and decided to protect her children this time.

going back to the geek squad, at first i also thought they were quite annoying but i love how the author made them out to be nice guys - that they didn't mean to "harrass" kj, they just didn't know how to properly convey their feelings. i also love how they portrayed kj and steph's friendship - they may fight sometimes but they still have each other's backs.

i was disappointed with tama and cameron: tama because even though i know she was just using kj, i thought that maybe in the end they would become real friends but they didn't so i felt like the whole journey of them becoming close in the book was just a waste of time; for cameron,i was disappointed that he was the stereotypical jock / jerk.

re robbie, i liked him from the very start of the book and i love their friendship but i felt that it was too one sided for kj - i mean, we just saw kj's side so robbie suddenly telling kj that he likes her at the end was just so sudden.

overall, this was a fun read but the execution of the last couple of chapters (esp the stage part) was poorly done. i thought kj will end up being sandy and robbie as zucko but when she became rizzo, i thought that was fine too, maybe the direction of the story was that she will transform to a more confident girl like rizzo, so why did kj have to suffer more humiliation on stage - that didn't make sense at all.(less)

Yep that's right. I finally finished it!
I bought this book because I'm a huge fan of Kieran Scott/Kate Brian and anything with geeks is just sounds interesting!... So this girl KJ (Nicknamed Cage by Tama *which I find very annoying btw*) is a Geek Magnet.. The Geeks love her! But she wants to be with the popular people like Tama and Cameron (her crush). Now Tama says shes going to teach her how to get her man, but at what cost?! Now along with this line up of people, there are also Stephanie (KJ's best friend) and Robbie (who I really liked!) As well as other dramas in her life she has to manage the school musical! Let the drama ensue...!
So although this book did take me ages to read, I read the last 200 pages over the weekend and I liked it. Although it's not the greatest book ever it does have some nice moments and an overall sense of coolness...
My favourite people include the character's Robbie who, after the scene with the singing in the car, I immediately wished was real and Fred, who is just adorable and for some reason reminds me a bit of Jesse Jackson out of she's all that! If you don't know who I mean then google it!
My least favourite's include the character of KJ, I think the problem with her is she's very predictable, which is a horrible thing to say, seeing as she's the protaganist. But I think the other character's make up for it and obviously Tama, but everyone need's a baddie!
Over all, I think this book is a good one to sit back on a Saturday to read. It doesn't need much thought processing and is a good wholesome tale. I would recommend this one to any fan's of Kieran Scott/Kate brian and if you're a fan of teen chick lit then it'll be a good choice :) (less)
