Stephanie Johnson does it best in her collection "One of These Things Is Not Like the Others" with the shorter stories. With these, she seems to hit the mark with writing indelible truths about the human condition in such a succinct form. Most of the other longer works, although often ending at a moment of eloquence, feels unearned because not enough attention was paid on character or story. Stephanie Johnson's One of These Things is Not Like the Others is the second full-length release from Keyhole Press, and the first short story collection they've released. I read an advance copy of the manuscript a month or so ago, and was particularly struck by the way Johnson is able to compress so much into both traditional length short stories and her smaller short-shorts.
