I bought this book because I was craving a "forbidden" relationship kind of story. After reading the blurb for DEAR SIR, I'M YOURS, I thought this would be the perfect remedy.

Overall, I ended up being disappointed with this read.

The conflict was not convincing enough for me. Perhaps it is because I am just not buying how traumatized Rae was after being spanked. She says she's worried because she thinks she can't say no to Conn, yet she runs off and marries an abusive asshole. The two were clearly still infatuated, because both admit to constantly thinking about the other during the five year absence, so why didn't Conn hunt Rae down during those five years? There were too many unanswered questions and the problems in the story seemed to be overly exaggerated.

The sex wasn't very... interesting. I didn't care when it happened, and I thought it should have happened more since the plot wasn't developed enough. Rae went from one extreme to the other, which ended up exasperating me. For the first chapter or two in the story, she was terrified of Conn. She secretly fantasized about him, but I felt like she was going to have a panic attack at any moment while she was at his grandmother's house. Then when Conn finally finds her (and that meeting was just weird), she struggles, then all the fight leaves her and she's ready to have sex with him. Then we have to deal with plenty of moments where Conn says "No, you're not ready." If a guy said that to me, I would have told him to go fuck himself. I know when I'm ready. But Rae just followed him like some lost puppy dog and obeyed everything he said.

I could not relate with any of the characters. Conn, I think, was the most normal and sympathetic one in this story. His granny was batshit crazy (and I'm not buying how she always knew everything and how she would be so nosy), and Rae became way too annoying after a while. I'm sorry, but I cannot buy how a college girl would be so traumatized after being spanked. It just... did not make sense whatsoever; especially when she was so attracted to this professor and pursued him all semester. Then her excuses about how she didn't think she could say no made her come off as a spineless neanderthal.

What finally made me throw my hands up in the air with this story was how easily Rae had orgasms... despite her fears. Some women, who are in happy and healthy relationships have problems having orgasms. Some women who are even slightly unhappy usually get distracted and have even more issues. Some do not ever have orgasms in their sexual relationships at all. And yet... Rae had an orgasm when Conn sucked on her fingers, from an intense make-out session, and then she said she'd have an orgasm just from having Conn staring at her. This is all while she's teeter tottering from one extreme -- freaking the hell out over Conn -- to the other -- wanting to fuck him like a freakin' lunatic.

I would love to meet any woman who can have an orgasm from being looked at, making out, or having her thumb being sucked on. Until I meet someone who truly can... I'm not buying it.

What also annoyed me was the fact that Rae constantly brought up her ex-husband... even while she was being intimate with Conn. I honestly don't know what Conn saw in her.

I really tried to be open minded about this story. I wanted to like it, but as the story progressed, I lost more and more interest. Some may like this story. Some, like me, won't. (less)

Oh boy, this book was not my cup of tea. Firstly, it was boring. I had to struggle to finish it. The quoting of poetry got a little tiresome by the end. She's also got a strong voice and great characterization, but where this read really came apart for me was heroine. She's also got a strong voice and great characterization, but where this read really came apart for me was heroine. It's been a long time since I encountered a heroine that I felt was simply too damaged for a HEA, but Rae falls into that category. She ran away from Conn five years ago because she was too scared by what he made her feel and was too scared to explore her kinky side. I get that, and at 21, it was probably the smartest thing she could do, but at 26, she's still all kinds of messed up and as fragile as a newborn colt, with an alarming tendency to bolt whenever she feels anything that makes her the least bit uncomfortable.

This isn't unheard of in romance, but Conn still wants to have a kinky relationship (and despite his protests, I don't think he would have been happy with anything less) and believes that this is what Rae needs. But, I ended up feeling that what Rae really needs is several months of intensive counseling. She has issues beyond what she can work out with Conn--why did she run away from him only to immediately end up with another dominating male? Why does she flee from uncomfortable situations? For this part, why did Conn wait five years to find her? They still both lived in the same medium sized town/area. He's been fixated on her the whole time--to the point of seeking out "lessons" on how to be a better dom and collecting items that he only intends to use with Rae. He seemed borderline stalker-ish, especially in light of Rae's issues.

It shouldn't feel like the characters are dancing across a frozen lake with no ice skates as they navigate what should be sexy scenes. A little reluctance is one thing, but Rae's issues seem far deeper. And perhaps, if the plot had focused a lot more on just Rae and Conn and their relationship with more encounters, we could have seen more of a change in her. But, there's a lot of other stuff happening in the plot, some of which is really funny like the haunted house, but it ends up detracting from the relationship. Burkhart does, however, seem to have a real gift for comedy and secondary characters, so I think I would probably appreciate the secondary plots more in a different book. She's also inventive and her engaging voice kept me reading whereas I otherwise would have put the book down. I'm going to give her another try as I *really* want to love her. Accepting recommendations of other titles of hers that I might like more! (less)

Side stories involve Rae’s abusive ex-husband, her father who was injured on the job and needs Rae’s help, Belle’s chef is having domestic problems, a ghost lives in the house who talks to Belle, and Belle solves others’ problems with her psychic knowledge.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
The main story is Rae thinking something is wrong with her because she likes pain during sex and being a doormat. After she and Conn get together, she wants to leave because “she’s afraid she’ll drag him down.” During her five years away from Conn, she wrote letters about her love for Conn and her fears. During the story we read these letters as flashbacks. The effect of this was too much time pondering her fears. I would have preferred fewer letters and more action. For most of the story, she’s a frightened mouse he’s trying to soothe. I didn’t get to see much of his dominant side. He was always being so gentle with her, trying to make her feel safe.

The conflict about Rae’s fears wasn’t a good enough story for me. Actually, the side stories sound more interesting, but none of those were developed enough.

Conn was pining for Rae for five years. Why he didn’t track her down? She was still living with her parents and working in her dad’s business. I also didn’t understand why Rae left Conn (a dominating guy) and married another dominating guy.

Not enough attention was paid to character development or dialogue. Sometimes that’s ok when the purpose of the book is sex. But the sex scenes didn’t have enough emotional punch for me. I wasn’t drawn in.

The characters quoted a lot of poetry during sex. This was more distracting than enhancing.

I am annoyed with the cover picture. It shows a woman tied with red yarn. In the book, Conn used scarves and white silk rope, not red yarn. I know this is the publisher’s fault not the author’s. It just bothers me when the publisher doesn’t care enough to match the content.

She bolted at the end of the semester, not sure what she wanted to do. She had other things in her life going on that led her to never return to college or Conn. She spent the next five years missing him and yet fearing his "power" over her. That she'd let him do whatever he wanted, no matter how much he hurt her and she'd lose herself in him.

So what does she do but marry a jerk who mistreats her. Even though she doesn't desire him the way she does Conn, she lets him do whatever he wanted, no matter how much he hurt her. She is a total doormat for some pretty appalling treatment before finally calling the marriage quits.

She comes back into Conn's life when his eccentric grandmother tracks her down and lures her back to the area for a job. That made me wonder why Conn didn't hire a detective to find Rae if he couldn't bring himself to touch the Internet. I mean, if he spent the five years apart yearning for her, you think it might have crossed his mind.

Anyway, traumatized by her ex husband, she continues to fear Conn will treat her just as badly. Still she realizes she is deeply in love with him and agonize over what she wants to do.

One other quibble, there are frequent references to the grooves on Conn's face. The grooves between his eyes. The grooves on his cheeks. The grooves deepen depending on his emotions. I think there were lines around his eyes as well. Just too many comments about active creases in the man's face.

Otherwise, I did enjoy the book and watching Conn get his neurotic girl back. Conn's grandmother was a fun, strong secondary character. The story kept my interest, even if I did roll my eyes a bit at Rae's dramatics. Overall, a nice job by a writer who shows some real potential.(less)

While this story has an element of BDSM in it, it’s very light. The story is more about breaking down Rae’s barriers and getting her to trust Conn. It’s a sweet love story that will tug at your heartstrings. Miss Belle provides all the comedic relief. Miss Belle is the type of woman I want to be when I get old and have grandchildren! She’s a riot and definite asset to this story.

The story flows really well and I enjoyed every minute of it. Rae and Conn’s love and attraction is the stuff of legends. I really enjoyed learning about Rae’s background through the letters she wrote Conn while they were apart from each other. It was a nice way to learn about Rae and what made her tick. I liked this method of delivery much more than flashbacks. She never mailed these letters to Conn but it was cathartic for her and provided the reader with her background. Once Conn got his hands on those letters, it gave him the information he needed to better understand Rae.

I really liked the fact that Rae and Conn had to fight for through her insecurities. It wasn’t a let’s talk once and everything was OK. There were set backs they had to work through. Conn made mistakes and had to prove to Rae that he could learn from them and she had to learn to let go. It was nice because it was more realistic than many of these I’ve read.

This is a wonderful story and I really liked it! It’s the first in a series and I can’t wait to dive into the books that follow!

Cinco años han pasado de eso. Rae sigue asustada de su respuesta a él, y Conn de su falta de control con la mujer que ama. ¿Se atreverán a desafiar todo, por estar juntos? ¿Lo lograrán?

Yo leí la precuela de este libro "Letters" y me enamoré de las cartas que Rae le escribe a Conn y que nunca manda, de las sexys palabras de Conn y de la manera tan linda en que es con ella, pero sobre todo, de la escritura de la señora Burkhart. Este no es el primer libro de BDSM que he leído, pero es de lo mejor que ha caído en mis manos.

Cuando Rae tiene ese encuentro sexual con Conn, se asusta. Llora de miedo, de alegría, de desconcierto... y termina huyendo de él. Me pareció una actitud muy real la de ella, aunque era una mujer que sabía lo que era el sexo, no estaba preparada para una sesión de dominación, y mucho menos para sentirse excitada y reaccionar con tanta pasión a las órdenes de su profesor. Conn no tuvo tiempo de explicarle nada. Primero porque simplemente perdió el control, llevaba deseándola durante meses, ella estaba ahí seduciéndolo y él mismo no estaba completamente informado de sus gustos Dom. Lamentablemente, el padre de Rae sufre una accidente y ella no puede regresar a la universidad, así que desaparece por 5 años. En esos años, tratando de borrar el recuerdo de él, termina casada con un hombre que la lastima, la maltrata y merma su autoestima muchísimo (I hate Dick!) Como es de esperarse, cuando Ra e se reencuentra con Conn, piensa que el control que su ex marido Richard alias Dick, ejercía sobre ella, es el mismo que quiere Conn, por lo que el pobre se las verá canutas para hacerle comprender a ella que la ama, la respeta y que es ella la que tiene la última palabra.

Me han gustado mucho los personajes, Conn con sus temores de perder el control con ella, pero con la convicción de amarla siempre, de que aunque estén haciendo cosas duras XD lo primero siempre es ella y su bienestar. Rae es también un personaje que te marca, verla sufriendo por lo que su ex marido le hizo y saliendo adelante para recuperar su vida con el hombre que ama.

Al inicio de cada capítulo hay unas cartas, que son las que Rae escribió a Conn durante los 5 años que estuvieron separados y que nos ayudan a comprender mejor lo que le sucedió. Además, podemos conocer a los dos personajes, lo que hace mucho más agradable la lectura. Y contrario a lo que puedan pensar, Rae y Conn no tienen sexo hasta muy avanzado el libro, aunque sí tienen escenas muy candentes antes de eso.

No podía dejar pasar a Miss Bell, la abuelita de Conn, que me arrancó más de una sonrisa. Una señora muy divertida, ingeniosa y un poco loca. Hay un elemento fantástico, un fantasma que es el abuelo de Conn, el Coronel como se le conoce a lo largo de todo el libro, que hace de las suyas también.

No puedo decir que recomiendo el libro, porque creo que la temática no es apta para todo publico, pero si gustan de romances reales, con su dosis de sufrimiento, personajes bien trabajados, sexo duro y muy caliente, bueno, éste libro les va a gustar. Si buscan un amor prohibido, no lo hallarán, eso que les quede claro. Pero amé a Conn y estoy loca por leer el libro de Victor, que es el hermano de Conn y es un libro con contenido más fuerte que éste. Un amor para recordar :)(less)

He realized where he went wrong as a Dom and set out to study and learn the right way to guide Rae Lynn's natural submissive side should he ever be blessed with finding her again. Rae Lynn, on the other hand, has spent the last five years caring for her ailing father, running the family business and married to a self-absorbed abusive loser.

Picking out a favorite part is a tough challenge for me. Would it be the crazy grandma who talks to her dead husband, wields a disciplining pink parasol, and expertly manipulates two pig-headed would-be lovers? Or maybe the poetry quotin' Dom professor, Conn, who has a PhD in tie-me-up-and-drive-me-crazy to go along with his PhD in English?

Ah, no.

I think it has to be the letters Rae Lynn wrote to Conn in the five years they were apart, never having intended to give them to him. Each chapter in the book opens with one of Rae Lynn's letters that serve as a journal of her self-discovery as she marries an abusive man, watches her beloved father's health fail and their business go down the drain, and she finally divorces the jerk and closes the doors to her family business. Through Rae Lynn's letters, we see her go from a naïve undergraduate student who ran away from a professor who showed her how much her body craved to be dominated to an enduring woman who understands the difference between a bully's selfish need to control and a dominant's gift to his submissive.

With tender moments that brought tears to my eyes, hysterical moments that had me gripping my sides, and Oh My Gawd moments that had me searching for a hand fan, I was up well into the night unwilling to put this amazing read down. The story was fast-paced, engaging, complex and well-rounded. Joely Sue Burkhart was a new author to me. She has talent in spades and I just can't wait to check out more of her books.(less)

But for better or worse, she has moved on with her life, and believes the past is behind her.

Conn on the other hand is still haunted by what went down all those years ago. He knew Rae was the one and was so out of his mind w/ lust for her; that he pushed past her limits, violated her trust in him, and essentially broke her sense of self. He didn't give/take any of the precautions (talking w. her/giving information, safe words, expressing how much he cared for her, or building up to the next level) that could have made her comfortable and provided emotional safety. He knows how exceptionally he f#cked it all up, and has mourned what could've been ever since. And when they cross paths again, there's no way he's letting her go. This time he's going to do this right, give her all the time she needs, and love her as he should have all along. *swoon*

Now I'm pretty sure that opening will annoy some, but it seems a spot on realistic reaction IMO. If I was an inexperienced girl violently awakened to that side of myself without any clue what the heck was wrong with me, I'd run for the hills too. This is a sweet and sexy story, definitely the softer side of D/s Sears lol.

I read DSIY for the first time last summer after reading a fabulous review by Pearl. I started with the free prequel Letters (you can find that one here) and I was hooked from the start. Rae is a strong woman afraid to lose herself in a man, especially Conn. She lived through a really bad marriage and still fights the consequences this left behind. She didn't see Conn for 5 years but she always thought of him. She wrote him many letters, explaining how she feels and what happened in her life. She never send one of them and I can so understand why. It's hard to bare your soul to someone else and Rae doesn't want to be that vulnerable. I adored every single one of her letters. Reading them feels like grabbing Rae's diary and taking a long deep look into her soul. The letters are so raw and heartfelt that I sometimes felt like intruding into her personal space. But nosy me doesn't mind that. *wink*

Conn on the other hand has a goal the moment he lays his eyes on Rae again: making it work this time. He is such a wonderful character: caring, loving and dominant with capital D. Conn knows what he wants. But even more than that he knows what he doesn't want: to hurt Rae or to make her run again. He is determinant to do everything what needs to be done to make Rae understand what he, his attraction to her and his sexual preferences are about. He takes his time to make her see the difference between submission and losing herself is. He shows her what kind of power a submissive holds over her Dom. I think this books describes this relationship in such a loving way that you just can't close your eyes against it.

The relationship buildup was lovely and spiked with a joke here and there and even some pop quizzes to lighten the mood. I loved how they both acted around each other when the first insecurities where diminished. I could see the adoration in Rae's eyes and I could feel the temperature rising when Conn saw his love.

The scenes between the sheets came after a rather long really hawt wait but they totally made up for that. And OMG the poetry was gorgeous. I would have never thought that something like that could be that sizzling.

I also enjoyed reading about the wonderful side-characters. Ms. Belle the more or less crazy lady who talks to her dead husband and solves murder cases in her free time or the math professor with love for swordplay.

All in all Dear Sir, I'm Yours is one of the best books I read in 2009 and it's already on my all time favorites pile. The love story is sweet, thoughtful and heartbreaking in the right mix with witty conversations, laugh-out-loud moments and scorching hot one-on-one encounters. You could never understand what's the gist of BDSM is? Read this book and you will get at least a fundamental understanding of it. Highly recommended read! (less)

I have found out that I am not always comfortable with some aspects of BDSM in the books I read but Joely Sue Burkhart’s take on it, is one that agrees with me.

DEAR SIR, I’M YOURS is the story of English Literature teacher Dr Verrill “Conn” Connagher and Rae Lynn Jackson. Rae joined his poetry class with ulterior motives and had a final exam that shook her to the core. She fled from the powerful emotions, not able to deal with her feelings and after five years their paths cross again, not entirely by way of coincidence. Conn let her go five years ago but now he is determined to show her there is nothing to be afraid of.

Rae is scared of what she’ll do for Conn, to what lengths she will go to please him. She is scared of losing her own self in her longing to give Conn what he wants and is exploring her feelings and boundaries after letting herself get caught in a bad marriage with an emotionally abusive and manipulative (ex-) husband.

Conn is afraid that Rae will run away again if he pushes her boundaries and does something or demands things from her she is not ready for. He likes to be in control but in a sweet way. He is possessive and (sexually) confident but never overbearing. He wants to be with Rae but he doesn’t want to cross her boundaries.

I was glad I read the prequel first because it gave me the background of what happened between Rae and Conn that lead them to the situation they found themselves in at the beginning of DEAR SIR, I’M YOURS. And the continuation of the letters from Rae at the start of each chapter is one of the things I loved about this story. I would think having so much insight into Rae’s character through her letters, it would take away from getting to know Conn but this was not the case.

The characterization of both main characters was balanced and well done. And there was also room for some intriguing and complementing secondary characters such as Miss Belle (Conn’s grandmother) and Mason Wykes (Conn’s colleague). I wonder whether Mason will have a story of his own some day. He was one of the secondary characters that made an impression on me and would love to see him get his HEA too.

What I liked most about this book was the story build-up. It was done gradually and perfectly. Allowing me, as reader, to go along with Rae in every next step Conn takes her. Conn is the one who is in control but it is Rae who sets the pace in the rekindling of their relationship. The character-development and extensive background for both Rae and Conn makes them well-rounded and multi-faceted characters that both captured my heart and took me with them to their HEA. A journey that was not without complications. The way Joely Sue Burkhart build up the story and characters with their struggles, angst and insecurities did not take away from the intensity or hotness of the love scenes. They were spine tingling and arousing. For me it was erotic romance as it is suppose to be: classy, erotic and emotionally intense.

Another thing I liked was the poetry throughout the story. I have never really been into poetry but this book has stirred my curiosity and the used poems fitted the story perfectly. I will definitely look up some of the mentioned poets and poems.

With DEAR SIR, I’M YOURS, a story of love, sexual discovery and most importantly trust, Joely Sue Burkhart has put herself on my reading map and I am ready for the next story that comes out of her pen (or keyboard).

I wasn't really sure what to expect with this book. It was a group read, and I'm a little hesitant about BDSM because, like Rae, I'm afraid there's a level of humiliation to it. Which is totally not what Conn wanted. I loved Conn... he was so extremely patient with Rae, and he worshipped her. And sometimes Rae broke my heart with all of her second-guessing.
