and so but then there is this book. and suddenly, everything is better - my secret inner shame over being so susceptible to the cute things and how unsophisticated it makes me look to be sleeping with my bunny every night... i needed this book to put it into perspective. seriously - who the fuck do these animals think they are, making us talk like babies with high-pitched "awwwwws" and the like? freeloading off of us and thinking that if they are an otter all they have to do is make li...more
I hadn't heard of this blog before, but saw this book on a list of recommended titles for reluctant readers. I'm really not all that reluctant of a reader, but I'm apparently all for telling cute animals what's what. Matthew Gasteier covers all the bases... animals in our homes (take that, adorable kitten), animals from around the world (and that, yoga polar bear!), and some of the more exotic creatures (you don't know fear until you see a binturong). Penguins are particularly hard hit, but d...more
FU, Penguin by Matthew Gasteier is not a book for those without a quirky sense of humor. FU, Penguin is a spinoff of the blog, which has about 900,000 unique visitors per day, and the brainchild of Watertown, Mass., resident Matthew Gasteier who views the attempts of animals to look cute as antithetical to their nature.

I thought this book was pretty hilarious, and I truly laughed at something on every single page. The reason I did not give this book five stars is because Trev and I read this book together, and there were a couple pages in which he did not laugh, and I felt like a self-conscious weirdo. But seriously, if nothing else, the picture headings are worth picking up the book; "Jaded hipster owls think they've seen it all" may sound like a completely obscure photo heading... but that is EXACT...more
The brilliance of this book, I think, is the range of your reactions as a reader. When I first picked up this book, my thought was, "Wow, I could have written this crap." This was immediately followed by, "Wow, I think all this crap." Which was followed by me thinking I was a bad person for hating cute animals, which was then followed by relief in knowing that enough people felt the same way to make this book such a popular seller.

It's sad that this book has such a high rating and it says a lot for the impact of expectations on rating. It's one of many books that came from a blog so I don't have high hopes. I just want something to make me laugh a bit, and this book delivers.
The book is full of cute pictures and angry, eventually repetitive, rants. But the first 30 pages are priceless, and there's another good 25 or 30 pages that are equally hilarious. It's a shtick, but it's a (dare I say) cute shtick that ha...more

I took F U, Penguin: Telling Cute Animals What's What by Matthew Gasteier from a recent BookCrossing meeting. The book was introduced with a story of misunderstanding and embarrassment. Being somewhat of an addict of cuteness on the internet, and a firm believer that the web is made up of cats (and possibly penguins, for those running Linux), I had to take the book home.

Can't go wrong kicking a new decade off by making fun of cute animals. I would have appreciated a little more venom, but there's still a belly-laugh on every other page. Check the blog out at www.fupenguin.com. Totally worth the afternoon you'll waste. It's all the fun of LOLCats, except you don't have to wade through all the fucktards who only THINK they get the joke. God, LOLCats is frustrating. THERE IS A FORMAT, PEOPLE. Stick to it.

I can't tell you how many times I've wanted to tell my freakishly cute pets what's what but I refrain because of what they might do to me in my sleep (except for Kitty Warrick because he's a total a-hole). But not only does this guy have the balls to tell cute animals to FU but he does it publicly and he gets paid for publishing a book about his rants. Although, I will have to admit that some of those animals pictured are pretty freakin' cute (but keep that on the downlow so I don't get inundate...more
I wasn't expecting to like this book at all, but my friend Stefanie had it on her coffee table and I couldn't put it down. It was really making me giggle. (I had never seen the website, but I am always looking for adorable animal photos on sites like ZooBorns.) I like the undercurrent of reverence for the cuteness of the animals even though the text is, on the surface, chastising them for their cuteness.
I bought this having never heard of the blog before, so when I found myself enjoying the book halfway through I went ahead and checked out the blog. Unfortunately, it has not been updated since November 2009, with no indication of what happened to the author. Even the Facebook page for the blog/book has not been updated since before the book came out. That kind of soured the rest of my reading. I tried to enjoy the book on its own, but knowing that the guy just took off as soon as his book was p...more
this was just one of the funniest things i have ever read. i was laughing out loud on the train looking like a crazy person. i understand how he feels when you see a cute animal and you want to drop kick it cause it is so freaking cute!! i love how he yells at the cutest little things and the pictures!!! if you want to crack up i suggest this book
A hilarious mash-up of Cute Overload and Passive Aggressive Notes.com, FU Penguin is based on the blog of the same title.
Gasteier nails the tone perfectly, his rants about the oppressive cuteness of species ranging from terrier puppies to lemurs has tongue firmly planted in cheek, Stephen Colbert-style. Not very many books offer both the chance to laugh out loud at over-the-top rants and coo over ridiculously adorable critters.

I've easily gotten more than $15 worth of enjoyment from the blog that spawned this book, and I felt that I owed the author so I bought the book. Which is more of the same, really, with a surprising amount of new material. Easy formula: if you like the blog, you'll like the book.
Hey, if you think that swearing at cute animals with anthropomorphized motivations isn't funny...then I don't know what to tell you, because it is.

Absolutely hilarious! I almost cry from laughing so hard every time I read the book or the blog. To be honest, the blog is a little better medium for the humor, but the book is still hilarious. Don't read if you're offended by cuss words, but otherwise...highly recommended for a good laugh!
Another one of those books that was a "hugely popular blog" first, Gasteier mixes unbearably cute photos (baby penguin! white tiger cub! a kitten and a rabbit sharing a plate of lettuce!) and snarky commentary warning you of the dangers of the Cute Industrial Complex.
I learned that cute animals should not run my life ... nor take up too much of my hard drive space! Awesome concept that degrades into a simple formula by the end. BUT! The pictures plus the writing kept me running. Checkout the blog at fupenguin.com too.
Hilarious. Cute animals get told what's what, and it's hilarious.
As well, unlike some other websites-turned-book (F My Life, Twitter Wit), the paper stock here is tremendous, with full-color images accompanying the text. Lovely.

I include this as a read book with the caveat that it's not really much of a read as far as quantity of text. Funny stuff but I'm not sad that I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.
Read a little of this book in the bookstore... It was blunt, crass, and I couldn't stop laughing. Baby animals are so damn cute, even the cold-hearted can't help themselves.
This book of cute animal photos and little blurbs telling them off is irreverent, funny (occasionally very funny), and quite silly. And yes, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Telling cute little brats to go eff themselves!? It doesn't get any better! You need a slightly askew sense of humor for this one :-)
Cute. 'Cept for the casual misogyny. At one point, the author mocks a moose for looking like a 'total vagina.'
This is a sarcastic, funny read. I liked I Can Has Cheezburger better, but enjoyed the sarcasam and wit in this book.

A good book if you enjoy CuteOverload.com and swearing combined! Some good out-loud laughs.
Pretty amusing, though lacks some of the entries I thought were funniest/cutest on the blog.
This books is great for what it is - a quick, snarky read filled with pictures of adorable animals. I giggled out loud a few times.
crying. tears. flames. flames, on the side of my face. heaving. heaving breaths.
Hilarious. In a way I have never encountered. Wish I thought of this.
Thanks again, Mom, for alerting me to the best in snarky, nasty humor!
