Very well-written and funny memoir about a woman going through menopause and eldercare (her mother, who has dementia). I include a more detailed review on Nanny Goats in Panties, in part of today's blog post: Marrying George Clooney With a Free Lunch

Though I went through menopause in 1996, many woman in a group discussion were raving about this book, so I got it. It's the most different--and possibly the most honest--look at menopause you'll ever read. In a sometimes angry, often funny way, she chronicles the things she thinks about when lying awake in the middle of the night, the things she googles in the middle of the night and later, her problems with her severely demented mother. Its a quick, but entertaining--and mostly enlightening

Okay. I have to come clean. Not only is Amy Ferris my friend, but I also wrote a blurb for the book, which is coming out in September.
Amy combines her laugh-out-loud sense of humor, with some really tough
personal stuff.
She is now blogging in the same voice at her site:

You can also find dates there for her book tour, and pre-order the
book via an Amazon link.

This book was remarkably fresh. I found myself, to the horror and humor of those around me, reading passages aloud to friends. I was not expecting it to be short vignettes about things that happen to all women, not just menopausal women. But what I really wasn't expecting were the sprinklings of poignant, touching stories regarding her relationship with her mother. A fantastic book that I will recommend again and again.

The reviews all talk about how funny this book is (and it is), but it's really a very poignant story about a mother and daughter. It's not what the author intended when she set out to write, and she is forthright about that at the end when she realizes the story has turned, but that's what it is, and thank goodness that's what it became. Because without that angle, this would have been a lot of fluff for naught.

This was a book club pick and I should have loved it; it's practically my autobiography. I guess it just didn't live up to my expectations. It was billed as laugh-out-loud funny, (like menopause is a laugh riot) but I didn't find it more than occasionally mildly amusing. I think it was the font changes that got on my nerves and put me off.

This book was funny, sad, and very real. I did enjoy the author's sense of humor and could relate to a lot of it. She didn't seem to hold anything back (even her embarrassing moments), which I appreciated.
However, it was unfocused and written in almost a stream of consciousness. There were also parts that I think she needed to elaborate a little more on (like why her best friend was so mad at her and dumped her as a friend via email). She never explained that.

I loved this book! I could relate to the situation, and Amy Ferris presented her case in a very very funny way. I found this to be a very lighthearted look a midlife for women, yet the author managed to touch on experiences that I could relate to. It was well worth the read!

Funny, irreverant, fast pasted and honest, I really enjoyed Amy Ferris' hilarious take on menopause. Most of all I enjoyed her honest about her relationship with her mother, especially at the end when I found myself crying in a park in NYC.

Amy Ferris' memoir is witty, intelligent and wise. A must read for women experiencing menopause. Or for anyone who knows a woman experiencing menopause. Or who may one day know a woman experi... oh- just read it!

I picked this book up because I heard rave reviews about it on a few different blogs. I will admit there are laugh out loud moments and bittersweet moments which the author weaves together quite well, but I can't rave about it quite as much as some of the other reviewers. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it; that isn't to say I wouldn't recommend it, but I hate to go in saying - THIS WAS THE FUNNIEST BOOK I EVER READ - because it wasn't. It was, however, worth a read. There are moments where Fer

A good story. Maybe I am too young for it to be laugh out loud funny, but the story of her relationship with her mother was touching and poignant.

Amusing memoir. I hadn't realized how similar menopause might be to pregnancy (mood swings, insomnia). Not looking forward to that!

Loved it! I SO understand the middle of the night musings. Plus she deals with an aging parent as so many of my friends are these days.

At the same time poignant and wildly funny--recommended for anyone, really, but especially the over 40 crowd. A real surprise!

so very honest a woman with more than spirit and compassion, more than revealing of us all.
