An excellent overview of Finland's weird history. Not even a country until the 20th century, Finland was the plaything of Swedish and Russian irredentism for centuries. Astonishingly, the Finns pulled through and became a technological and economic powerhouse by the 2000s. In a nice shift, this history focuses tons on the 20th-21st centuries, especially Finland's relationship with the Soviet Union post-independence, and the move towards the EU.

We had to buy it for history class, but it's actually a "normal book", and quite interesting if you give it a try. It tells about what has happened to Finland since prehistoric time until now in a novel-ish, entertaining way, aimed at a large public (I assume), and, thus, not very complicated to read. It didn't get the fifth star because it can be quite boring, and I see the language as kind of wannabe hi-tech.
