I think Carol Burnett is one of the funniest women of all time. I found this book on my parents' bookshelf years ago and thought it sounded interesting to learn a little more about her. After moving it with me to a couple of houses I finally opened the cover and started reading. After several chapters found I couldn't put it down. My only disappointment in reading the book written for her daughters was that she didn't talk much about their dad. I had to look up details myself to find that she ha...more

Carol Burnett writes memoirs of painful growing-up years thru big break on Broadway

One of my favorite performers is Carol Burnett – watching her long-running TV show was the most laughs and the best medicine anyone ever had. I was aware that both her parents were alcoholics, due to a slander lawsuit she brought against a tabloid for suggesting she had been drunk on a plane. She cannot risk taking a drink for fear of ending up like one or the other parent.

Carol was born in San Antonio, and was l...more

I don't ever really read memoirs by celebrities. The tell all gossip doesn't really matter to me. (I did read Allison Ingram's - Confessions of a Prairie Bitch because she was a political activist and her story illustrated the impact someone can have when they stand up for a cause. However, Carol Burnett's memoir was given to me by a friend and I thought I would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. This book doesn't 'tell all' and she doesn't stoop to gossip to tell her story. What you rea...more

This is a terrific read. Carol Burnett grew up in a family of alcoholics and was raised by a grandmother who had to have some type of mental illness - she was functional, but barely. She and her grandmother lived in a one room apartment in Hollywood CA and Carol lived in the actual shadow of the "Hollywood" sign. Such a glimpse into what determination can do.

There isn't a huge amount of self-reflection, however, which is what usually makes a memoir great. However, she does a really good job of...more

I have always loved Carol Burnett. I grew up watching her on TV when I was little and she was just so funny. I happened to pick this book up and kept it on a shelf for months. Last night I was desperate and picked it up. I couldn't put it down! Much like the Betty White biography it is just a very interesting read. Just like she is talking to you. I never new much about her before. I always like it when you read about people who had such a tough upbringing and managed to pull them selves up by t...more

I never watched her show, and I didn't know the first thing about her career. In fact, my only real point of reference for Carol Burnett was her role as evil house mother Ms. Hannigan in the film version of "Annie." So this book was a pleasant surprise. In a sea of mediocre memoirs by mediocre celebrities, Ms. Burnett's sad and sweet story stands out with its honesty and accessibility. Her dysfunctional childhood is hosted by a cast of hilarious characters. I enjoyed this book so much more than...more

I experienced this as an audiobook which is fortunately read by the author but unfortunately abridged. It is actually a grand total of one cassette. But still a lovely experience as Ms. Burnett is such a sensitive, appealing person who really wears her heart on her sleeve, and, in this case, in her voice. I have listened to many audiobooks read by the author, but this is the only one that I can remember where the author cried. Ms Burnett had a lot to cry about regarding her youth, and it's wonde...more

This book is good adding more anecdotes to her earlier life story but it didn't have the same sincerity and raw honesty as the first story. I believe when she said she was writing the first book so her children could understand where they and she (Carol) had come from, that it was never originally intended for anyone else. The truth was in her intimate descriptions of the life and people she knew and cared for. I still find this book of interest. She is a very good story teller with warm and bea...more

Yay! Finally a four star-er! My Grandma Doralou lent this book to me and wanted me to read it. I totally thought it was going to be a boring, dry celeb-tell all. Not at all. Carol Burnett is a fascinating woman. The book was mainly about her childhood and teen years. Towards the end it started to get into how she first got famous.

Now that I've read about her early past, I want to know more...I wonder if she wrote another book?
Carol is a good author...her stories are both tragic and hilarious. He...more

book is quite old (1986) but still --- Burnett is a favorite, and it's interesting learning about her childhood and early life.

Lots of humor, even in the circumstances of living with an alcoholic mother and primarily being raised by her grandmother. Interesting to see how driven she was to succeed, her determination, how she got her start. Makes me want to go back and watch some old episodes, or some of Mama's Family, to see how autobiographical some of those skits were.

Definitely will seek out...more

I was really stunned by how candid this book was, and how wonderful. Carol Burnett is so endearing, and she's talented too! This book is a treat to read.

Burnett is probably best known for her television show where she performed in various skits with a talented cast. One might not realize just how shy she was as a kid, or that she never dreamed of being a movie star until college. However, it is all here in this autobiography, a charming and personal account of a life filled with entertaining cha...more

Never judge a book by it's cover. That's a good thing to keep in mind whenever you are selecting a book to read. I was wanting a light read after finishing a book that was very text heavy so I chose this book because it is about Carol Burnett, one of the greatest comediennes of all time; however this book was not a light read and full of laughs. On the contrary, it was very serious and sad. We find out the beginnings of Carol's life and how rough she had it growing up. In our wildest dreams watc...more

This should get TWENTY-FIVE STARS. Five for the memoir itself (no, I'm serious -- it truly is a wonderful memoir) and twenty for BEING BY CAROL BURNETT.

As proof of my objectivity in evaluating the memoir on its own merits (i.e., the initial five stars), I will note that Julie Andrews' memoir gets twenty-four stars. Four for the memoir itself, and twenty for being written by Julie Andrews. OBJECTIVITY: I HAS IT LIEKWOAH

My parents bought this book at a yard sale when I was about 14. It is by far my favourite book I have ever read. Reading this booking and knowing the success she became story did not make me cheer for her any less. The silly stories of her and her gandmother to the heart break of watching her monther's alcoholism spiral out of control. I have read this book front to back at least a dozen times and I love it more each time.

I grew up watching the Carol Burnett show. More than that, I grew up watching my mother watching the Carol Burnett show. Although I didn't really understand a lot of it I loved seeing my mother laugh until she cried. Reading her memoir I feel like I understand the show even less than I did as a child. With the life Ms. Burnett lead I'm surprised she had sense of humor. But I suppose one would have to to survive. I had a hard time putting this one down.

This wasn't a book I was planning on reading this week but I did and I loved it. I love biographies and Carol Burnett's show is one I loved as a child. She came from humble, difficult circumstances and yet she choose to love her life and very disfunctional family. She is a great example of someone who worked hard at achieving her dreams and having a great attitude inspite of a less than perfect upbringing.

It's no knock on Burnett, who has a readable writing style, but the flow of this book might have benefited from the assistance of an established journalist. Then again, that may have colored its genuine, "from the heart" tone and tenure. Burnett's is a remarkable story, told from the perspective and with the innocence of a young girl and young adult rising above her surroundings and limitations. Just as remarkable as the story is the courage, conviction, and confidence displayed by Burnett herse...more

This "letter to her daughters" is more of a traditional type of autobiography. Some of the stories/incidents are the same as appear in
her other book --This Time Together. This tells of Carol's childhood through her first marriage and early work in theater leading to her earliest success. This Time Together continues that story being more career oriented. One More Time is more revealing of the personal Carol.
I enjoyed both books and recommend them both.

This was very interesting. I love Carol Burnett and so this appealed to me right away. This was an easy read and I loved the different stories from her life, I just wish some of the stories went into more detail. It also took me a bit to get use to the way it was written, bits and pieces of memories. Love the fact she never gave up no matter what her struggles were. (and boy what a family life).

I listened to this memoir which is read by Carol Burnett herself and loved it. Carol has a truly refreshing perspective on life despite setbacks and personal tragedies. She talks of her start in show biz and takes the reader up to current day with no griping, whining or backstabbing. Hers is a refreshing look at life .... And mostly she is thankful and awestruck at her good fortune.

written weird but still interesting.. i wish i knew going in that it tells only about her childhood and early start.. she never gets to the carol burnett show or anything after just barely starting the garry moore show.. goes from 1960's with 20 pages left in the book to 1985.. skips over that whole part in her life.. hoping her second book, this time together, will fill in the holes..

If you want to know more about Carol Burnett's life this is the book. It goes through her childhood and all of the toughtimes she had. It's amazing that she was able to perserve through all of the challenges but she did. It really is a letter to her three daughers so they will know her better. Really enjoyed reading this

I just remembered this book... I did a report on it in junior high. We had to choose a autobiography and I'm sure that the other kids thought I was a weirdo for picking Carol Burnett. But I remember liking this book... I have a vague remembrance of something being shocking... she had a rough childhood.

I may be from the SNL generation, but this book was positively wonderful. My mom introduced my eleven-year-old brother and me to The Carol Burnett Show, and we fell in love with the raw talent displayed by everyone who ever appeared on it. This book, and the follow-up, This Time Together, tell Carol's story in a way that only deepens the appreciation for her work, her talent, and her person.

Overcoming all odds and a difficult (at best) childhood, Carol persevered, to become one of comedy's all time greats. Written honestly and with touches of humor, this is not only a poignant tale of growing up in 1940's Hollywood, but a glimpse of how there once was an attainable American dream. A wonderfully written memoir.

The story as a whole was a bit disjointed as she seemed to gather bits and pieces of her life from memory. I was impressed by the amount of sorrow this clown had endured and her ability to rise above it. Interesting perspective on life.

I grew up watching Carol Burnetts show and was recently lucky enough to have seen her one woman show in person, An Evening with Carol Burnett....I adore her. I couldn't get enough of this book or her more recent memoir either. She is a treasure :)

Well, it was interesting to learn about where Carol came from and her early life but I wasn't expecting for the book to end when she was still in her early 20s. I wanted to know about her later life and career - not what I got.

This was a really great read. It starts off spotty because Carol Burnett is telling her story as she remembered it at a young age. It gets better as she grows older. You learn no matter how "crazy" your family is, it's your family and you've gotta love 'em.

“The sidewalk was all cracked and wavy, like little hills, and the weeds pushed their way up through the cement. I had to roller-skate there anyway, because they wouldn't let me out of their sight, and they could watch me from the swing on the front porch of the old house. It was hard to skate there, and I kept falling down and getting sores on my knees...Sometimes, when they left me alone in 102 to go to the store, I'd turn on the radio and dance all around the room. I'd get on the furniture and jump from couch to the bed to the chair, leaping and twirling the whole time.” 3 people liked it
