Diana and Georgie live in the woods surrounding crumbling Oak Hill Manor, bound by a strict set of rules. The reason for the rules is vague, but that doesn't make them any less binding. First and foremost, Diana and Georgie aren't allowed to talk to anyone else. Usually that's not a problem, since Oak Hill Manor is abandoned and folks tend to stay away due to the rumors of ghosts and evil spirits. But then a new caretaker arrives along with his daughter Lissa. Diana knows she's not supposed to t...more

The Old Willis Place is a well-written and very quick read that contains enough mystery, surprises, and chills to entertain most of its targeted audience (middle-grade readers). Mary Downing Hahn has written an interesting and touching ghost story featuring two siblings, Diana and Georgie, who live in the woods that border the old Willis place (which is reputedly haunted - something spooky is definitely going on there!). Lissa, the daughter of the Willis property's new caretaker and Diana become...more

Diana and Georgie live by rules bound upon them from an unknown source or person they were just put in their heads right after the "bad time" they're simple rules with unknown cosiquences. Stay away from the Oak Hill Manor (The Old Willis Place), do not leave the grounds, and do not be seen by anyone. Which is an easy rule to follow until Lissa moves in with her dad and her loyal dog MacDuff move in as the new caretakers of the grounds. Lissa is appears to be about 12 the same age as Diana or l...more

Okay, now I feel slightly guilty for giving it just one star. But honestly? I didn't like it.

Maybe it's just not the genre for me, but this book is supremely creepy. I was maybe eleven or twelve when I first read it, and while it didn't give me nightmares (I never get nightmares from books, ever), it did give me a hard time going to sleep for a while. I listened to this new CD I had just got every night (coincidentally, I hadn't planned that - it was my listening to music at bedtime stage), and...more
Two children live in the woods surrounding an old abandoned house. They are alone expect for the times when a groundskeeper comes to live there. The newest one bring a young daughter with him. One of the children, Diana, is excited at the possibility of having a new friend. Her brother, Georgie, thinks this is a bad idea. He thinks it will break the vague rules they live by. It may also anger the other person still lurking around the property.

When I started this book, I thought the children wer...more

Diana and her little brother Georgie have lived near this old, Victorian house for a long time. Caretakers try to take care of the mansion, but they always come, then soon go. What makes them leave? Diana and Georgie just like to mess with them, like stealing their TV remote and changing channels while the caretakers watch. They never do real harm. Caretakers insist they can hear a spirit in the mansion. They say it is haunted. Is it? Diana and Georgie never took a second thought to that house....more
This book was really good! It was a very interesting story and was surprising in the end. I really enjoyed this book. If you like creepy, mysterious stories, then this is the book for you.

This book is about a girl named Diana and her brother named Georgie. They live on a farm called oak hill manor. Them and their parents used to live there together, but then "the bad thing happened" which I'm not gonna tell you what "the bad thing" is. The caretakers that come, Lissa and her father, become Dian...more

First off, let me just say that randomly getting a book handed to you when you still have ten books to read can be slightly irritating. *Evil glare at lender* Ok, now that that's over with I must say I've never read a ghost story before. Slightly ironic, wouldn't you people who know me agree? Anyway, it was a good book. Though you can guess what will happen fairly easily, you still get amazingly caught up in the scenes. For example, in one of the exploration scenes, I literally leaned into the b...more
Lissa Morrison is a young girl who comes to live with her father as caretakers of the old Willis place, a run-down country house at the edge of the woods. Diana and Georgie Eldrige have been living in those woods for many years and Diana is excited that the new caretaker has a girl just her age to be friends with. But things aren't as they seem and the old Willis place keeps a very dark secret which Lissa must discover for the sake of her new friends. Can she help them before it's too late?

So.. I just finished THe Old Willis Place: A ghost story. And I have to say this book is the the BEST book I ever read. It's a bout a girl and a boy Dianna and GEorgie who live in in a field where there is a mansion that an old lady died in. A caretaker and his daughter Lisa move in near the mansion. When Dianna becomes friends with Lissa she puts her and her brother's "life" in danger . Breaking the rules she had recieved had deadly consequences . This book is good. I am not really sure I stopped reading it! Oh! Yes I am, probably because one of my BFFs reads books so o fast then tells me that they are sooo good! You know who you are! cough! Genes!
Diana and her brother Georgie live under a very strict set of rules...stay out of the Old Willis House, but don't leave the property...they live on their own, with memories of their parents.

A new caretaker moved in, along with his daughter, Lissa.

Everyone in the story is dealing with crippling loss...and all the guilt and confusion that goes along with it.

There is a deeper mystery, and the children must solve it to bring peace to each of them.

Satisfying conclusion for them all...something i've...more

I love short books that don't pull me away from life too long. I tend to ignore my responsibilities when I am in a book. This book was perfect.

Unlike larger novels filled with chapters of picture painting and side stories that can sometimes start to bore me, Mary Downing Hahn is able to tell a tale without over doing the picture painting. I appreciate that.

I am an adult but am not afraid to say I enjoy the young reader fiction for its lack of 'mature content'.

I recommended all of this author's...more
Someone is watching when Lissa and her father come to live in a trailer on the old Willis place. Her father thinks it will be a quiet place where he can write. Lissa feels someone watching, even if her dog McDuff seems blissfully unaware as he enjoys the new surroundings.
There’s a big old abandoned house on the property and Lissa’s father tells her a little bit about the background of the house and the old woman that died in the parlor there and was not found until a week later. He tells Lissa t...more

The title of this book is THE OLD WILLIS PLACE. The author of this book is Downing Hahn. The book is a fictional mystery.
The main characters are Dianna and George. The main characters lived by themselves. They both went to people's house to get their things. When Lissa and her father moved in, Dianna went and got Lissa's bike and teddy bear to give to her little brother. Dianna wanted to be Lissa's friend but George said that she can't break the rules nor the promise they had. My favorite char...more

I grew up in a small shingled house down at the end of Guilford Road in College Park, Maryland. Our block was loaded with kids my age. We spent hours outdoors playing "Kick the Can" and "Mother, May I" as well as cowboy and outlaw games that usually ended in quarrels about who shot whom. In the summer, we went on day long expeditions into forbidden territory -- the woods on the other side of the t...more
