I, Spy? (Sophie Green Mystery #1)
by
Kate Johnson (Goodreads Author)
Never underestimate the blonde. "The British spy is elegant, suave and sophisticated. The British spy is not blonde, built, and confused." But Sophie Green is, and she's just been hired by a highly secret government agency. She drives a car the colour of bile and is obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She doesn't know which end of the gun to fire from and her hair hasn...more

It took me a bit to warm up to the main character but once I did I enjoyed the story.
An amusing cozy spy mystery with a touch of romance and a protag who is nearly always her worst enemy. She ends up being lucky when she really needs it and a bit off the wall most other times. She has a good voice and while she isn't a wonderful person all around, she's definitely got potential.
I will most likely look into reading sequels.

Call me a prude or old-fashioned, but I've never understood a writer's need to use the "F" word...especially in something supposed to be a comedic mystery. I'm also not a fan of sexual descriptors. Granted that is my own bias, which is why I gave it 3 stars. I would have liked to see where this was going, but the constant use of the "F" word and sexual innuendos turned me off.
If you don't mind those things and like a light-hearted British read, then you will enjoy this.(less)

I immediately fell in love with the heroine, Sophie Green, a harried British airport employee. She's endearing, charming, flawed but lovable. Luca/Luke Sharpe is a capable alpha hero as a gorgeous undercover spy, and the romantic tension and chemistry between the two are wonderful.
I found the mystery to be engaging, and it was loads of fun to see Sophie learn to be a spy by the seat of her pants. The premise of SO17 was a bit weak - a small collection of motley, half-assed and underfunded spies...more

Every morning Sophie Green swore that she would quit her job at Ace Airlines for making her get up at an ungodly hour but she looked good in the uniform and when anyone asked where she worked they thought it was so cool, but if she quit she would miss Sven, a hunky blonde god who was to die for. She was a ticket agent but people did not need to know that it was a boring yet stressful job and she was running late for work, as she usually did. Seeing that she had the counter next to Sven Sophie ha...more
English chick lit action story that fell short. There were some funny parts, but telling a story in the first person raises the stakes. By the end of the book I was getting tired of the main character, Sophie Green. She is a 5'10" busty blonde bombshell who all the men flirt with, but has no self-confidence. She says that she is not smart, but everyone else in the story disagrees. She can't work computers but she finds missing video files in the computer archives, etc. The British phrases were f...more
These books make no sense. Why would a government just let random people become spies? And also give them no training? And not mind when they kill people or leave them locked in basement cells without actually arresting them?
Also, you can't bundle up your cat and bring her to your parents' house without a second thought and talk about how the cat knows the house so well that she wakes up earlier than at home because she remembers that's when your dad wakes up and feeds her and then later have a...more

Fun and witty, this book was a delight to read from start to finish. Maybe it's because I could relate to the lead character so very well (not with the spy business, you understand, but with being slightly obsessed with Buffy, cocktails and shopping? Yes!)
I read the book in a day, and am definitely going to be looking up more. Sophie Green is a likeable, funny, typically British girl who ends up saving the day on several occasions and proves that busty blonds can be far more than the typical ste...more

This book was so much fun. I came to this book via Kate Johnson's erotic romance alter-ego and coulnd't be more surprised and delighted. Sophie Green is a heroine to adore. She's not a deadly assassin, she's not infallable, but boy, is she fun to read about. Snarky, sarcastic and more than a little cheeky, Sophie Green handles herself well in the surreal and highly dangerous situations the plot sees her in. The chemistry between she and the hero (or is that heroes, cause there is more than one h...more
I downloaded this from amazon at the time it was a free read.
This was a great read! I loved Sophie. A British airline employee who is beyond obsessed with Buffy finds herself in all kinds of shenanigans. Luke/Luca a SEXY special secret agent recruits her to help him catch the bad guys. Her claim to fame is she's smarter then she looks. All she desires is a gun but has yet to obtain a license. After witnessing something she shouldn't have her life had been put in danger and she began receiving so...more
This is a pretty standard plug in character names, nationalities, and choose plot A or B book. It had a few good laughs and I enjoyed the British flair; it probably made the book seem better than it was.
Sophie is living a mediocre life as an airline agent when she stumbles onto a secret agency. By twists and turns that are unbelievable, she is recruited into said secret agency. Right from the bat, she does not follow orders and does incredibly stupid things. I was glad when she kept getting hur...more

I don't know how I found this book. I usually don't buy any eBooks for over a buck, but somehow this found its way onto my Kindle and boy am I glad! I, Spy is an absolutely charming book. The characters are a hoot, the premise is fresh (I do love fresh), and the writing is engaging.

This was a fun little yarn, very similar to Stephanie Plum mysteries( the main character even references her). Set in England, the (e)book describes the adventure of Sophie Green, a newly-minted spy and her misadventures. The beginning chapters felt disjointed and almost made me stop reading.( maybe because I had to get used to the British lingo??) The later chapters were much better and I enjoyed the characters. I probably will search out the sequels. If you like Janet Evanovich, you will like t...more
I read this on the Kindle app for my android phone because it was offered for free. I actually had it on my reading list long before downloading it, but was excited to see it offered for free!
I will say reading this book on my phone did participate to the experience I had with it. I found it really difficult the first few chapters to keep up with the story because I could not tell where exactly I was in the text.

There was one point where I was seriously disappointed with how unrealistic the whole story seemed to be, and I really had to force myself to press on and keep reading during that time. But I am glad I did, because aside from that, it was kind of a fun little, romantic read. I think I have just been spoiled lately by more serious spy novels, so as long as you take a light-hearted approach to the book, it is a cute little book. "I, Spy" is a wonderfully fun mystery. The main character, Sophie Green, is a British airline attendant who finds herself caught up in the shadowy worlds of top secret government agencies. The plot was fast paced, the dialogue humorous, and the characters likable. There are some noticeable plot gaps and overly convenient "coincidences" but if you are in the mood for a chick-lit romance/ mystery with a heroine you'd want to have a drink with, here is your book.
An easy read if you aren't wanting to use your brain much. I couldn't get past the main character thinking and talking about her boobs so much. I don't think that way, none of my friends are that way, so it seemed odd. I didn't think the character behaved in the way most humans would in certain situations. For me this was just fluff.Stupid girl, happens upon solving a mystery while being quite worried about her looks. Really? A spy. I don't think so.
I downloaded this on Saturday and read it in one day! It is a fun and easy read. If you like the Stephanie Plumb novels you will be an instant fan of Sophie Green. I know I am. I can hardly wait to find another Sophie Green Mystery. Readers at Amazon.com gave I Spy?4.5 stars out of 5 and I completely agree! This is a very enjoyable read and left a smile on my face. Download it today while it is still FREE! After all Blondes do have more fun! LOL
I loved this book! Sophie is a very likeable character and she gets into some funny scrapes. Some of the terminology is incomprehensible to an American as it is purely British. And unless you know England you won't be able to follow a lot of where it takes place. But it's not enough of a problem to detract from the read. Laugh out loud funny! Read it, I don't think you'll regret it.
Sophie is an airport assistant who gets shanghaied into a top secret government agency with very few staff and not much funding. She might well be the worst possible fit for the role, but she's stubborn enough to stick it out. The whole scenario has precisely no credibility, but it was laugh-out-loud funny in places and the plot raced along at a breakneck pace. I definitely want to read the next one.
I, Spy had several laugh out loud moments for me. I really enjoyed this book. Light read but worth it. Can't wait to start the rest of the series. Only one caution to the reader if, the main character is British and uses British slang... I loved the fact that she references one of the characters from another series that I love. All it all a decent read.
There is no such thing as too much Sophie Green. I read Run Rabbit Run by Kate Johnson a few months ago as it was published by my favourites, Choc Lit. I couldn't put it down so I've gone back in time to the first one, and believe me, it doesn't disappoint. Luke is absolutely delectable and Sophie is just so fallible... it makes it a credible, funny, endearing read.
Hilarious.... quite possibly one of the funniest books I've read. It has witty dialogue, sexy and misunderstood guys (who you want to slap for being a little bit jerky at some points, but awesome nonetheless), and Spike, from buffy. This was a cute plot, likable characters and realistic diaologue. Definate beach read :)
Nice, fun read. I loved the characters -- Sophie was likable and relatable, down to her constant boycraziness.
A few parts got a bit long (and I occasionally wondered why a character insisted on doing something, despite it being stupid and dangerous). Good suspense throughout, lots of humor thrown in. Read this book when you just need a freaking break (and we all need one).

A fun book. I enjoyed the main character and the situations she got herself into. Everything worked in the context of the world it was set in.
My only complaint is that the climax of the book seemed to come out of nowhere, with no real hints about the how or why until it is revealed.
Still it was a fun, light read and I look forward to more from the author.

I thought this would be like a British version of the Stephanie Plum series but Sophie Green is not as likeable or funny. It's not a matter of cultural differences since even though I'm American, I've lived in the UK for years and my husband is English. It was stuff like "my desperate need to be close to the beautiful people" - she just came across as too hung up on appearances.

Well, it was okay. I found the main character Sophie Green to be annoying with her constantly doing something stupid or being a damsel in distress. How was it possible for Sophie to have gotten a job as a spy? It must of been her looks because it wasn't for her brain.
I don't think I will be reading the sequel for this.

Kate Johnson lives in rural Essex where she belongs to a pride of cats and puts up with a demon puppy. She did actually do most of her homework, but quickly so as to have more time to stare out of the window thinking about heroes. Stay in school, kids. Kate has done a variety of not-particularly great jobs, ranging from airport check-in to lab assistant, but much prefers writing for a living. For...more
