at souley vegan, just as i dove upon the meal sat before me, a black woman tarrying near the dessert counter turned and asked what book i was reading. short stories, a journal, some poetry: i gave gary fisher's biography: black and gay student of eve sedgwick. emphasized he died of aids in '93. and eve died later of cancer. my inquirer was moved by this, "and had cancer, too?" did my sheepish tabloid brief curry moderate legitimacy as politicized tragedy? I finally read this book after hearing about it for years. I found myself reading the fragments, trying to see a life (after it was over) through the eyes of editors who were mentors and friends.

Recommends it for: anyone interested in feeling intense intense things
this book really shook me up. i wish that i knew gary in real life. his life, his poetry and prose, his courage to write and speak are really inspirational.

themes of isolation, multiple selves, internalized prejudice, sickness, all come up in this read.
