Mercy Allcutt is an honestly good person, with a dragon of a mother.
The Mercy Allcutt Mysteries are light mysteries with a lot of humor sprinkled throughout. I like the relationship between Mercy and her boss Ernie Templeton, P.I., buy would have liked less strife in this book. I felt like I was either stressed about how her dreadful mother was going to react, or how her hothead boss was going to react. The fist book had quite a bit more playfulness to it which was one of the things I really enj

Mercy Allcutt is happily working as a secretary for private investigator Ernie Templeton, when the worst thing possible happens--her stern Boston dowager mother appears, ready to disapprove of everything Mercy does--ever. Mrs. Allcutt is old fashioned even for 1926, and when she learns Mercy has gone to a seance at which a woman was murdered, Mercy (and her married sister Chloe, with whom she lives) know that there will be trouble. Ernie and his policeman friend Phil, who is in charge of the ...more

What a delightful series! The story was entertaining, suspenseful (I didn't figure out who the killer was until author let us know.) with a lot of humor in it! The characters were very engaging and I enjoyed Buttercup, her French poodle! This is the first in this series that I've read and now I know why I'm always so far behind in my reading, I try to read a book a day and my "too read" pile of books just never gets smaller! I get a book, read it and then have to go grab the rest of the series ...more

Death At A Seance

In this delightful story, Mercy is helping a friend whose Mother has become involved with spiritualism. She attends a seance at his home. When the lights come on, one of the participants is dead. The police arrest a servant, the brother of Lulu. Mercy sets out to prove his innocence, in spite of fact that her Mother has arrived to stay with Chloe. The story has enough changes to hold everyone's attention. There various funny scenes as Mercy's Mother and Ernie attempt to tries co

After several mediocre stories ( I have been choosing poorly lately) it was so nice to finally read a book that mades me smile the whole way through. I love Mercy. In this instalment she has to deal with her delightfully hideous mother on top of her job and her investigations. I wanted to jump in a defend Mercy but she does a good job of standing up for herself. I also love how she and Ernie were fighting at the police station and that she was driven to kick him.

Another light mystery from Alice Duncan. A visit from the terrible "mother" from Boston. A couple of murders to fill the time and Mercy thinks she can solve them…and she does. A really surprise murderer, to me anyway. I'll read more of this series and Alice Duncan's other books but probably not the romance novels.

A fun read set in Los Angeles in 1929, Mercy Allcutt has a brother-in-law in the film industry, and a private eye boss. There are plenty of unexpected twists and turns as Mercy gets involved in trying to solve multiple mysteries, including a murder. This story reminded me of Nick and Nora films. I plan to read more books in this series.

The second mystery in the Mercy Allcut series, wherein our 1920's heroine, a Boston Brahmin, transplanted to Los Angeles in search of "real life", again finds up herself caught in shades of mayhem ranging from glamorous to gangster-ous. Cute fluff.
