I was really bothered by this one. I know that the message is two-fold: here is the right way to show that you love someone (words, hugs, and kisses) and parents will love you no matter what you do. But I can see a kid getting the idea from this that you can get away with all kinds of naughty things as long as you turn around and tell your parents that you love them, or give them hugs and kisses afterwards. Perhaps this should be read to children accompanied by discussion?
I was a little let down by this one. I had read How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight? and really enjoyed it. I expected this one to be more cutesy about how little kids say I love you. But instead, I felt this book was more for adults. It showed all the things that toddlers do that make parents annoyed and then didn't focus much on the cute I love yous. I remember the previous book was fun because it showed the naughty bed time behavior, but did it in a parody kind of way. It was sharing with to...more
Julia and I both fell in love with jane Yolen AND Mark Teague when we read How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight. Goodnight is one of the best childrens books I've ever read and it was especially captivating for us because we had a small cartoon on one of our channels that put the book in motion. We had no idea it was even a book for months because I would fast forward to the actual cartoon. As soon as I found it was was taken from a book I had to have it. And we both loved it and still read it to this...more
I think this is one of my favorite Dinosaurs books, outside of the How Does A Dinosaur Go To Bed. It's a book my kids and I both loved reading and when I pulled it out of the box last week my kids wanted me to read it right away.
The story is a good way to remind our children that even when they're naughty, we still love them.

Valentine's is about Saying, I LOVE YOU.
I wonder, how do dinosaurs say "I love you"?
Both story performers held up a copy of this very large format picture book. One performer read the books dedication by the author and the other read the illustrator's dedication. It's nice to show children that books are made BY people FOR people. Again, the performers switched off reading pages...

Yolen & Teague's dinosaurs are back, this time displaying appropriate and inappropriate behaviors while interacting with their parents. They wake up grumpy, flood the house while playing in the sink, make a mess at the table, and more, but they also help clean up, blow kisses, and hold Mom's hand in the grocery store. Each verse ends with a parental reminder of their unconditional love for their offspring, making this both funny and comforting for young children. Through the colorful, cartoonish...more
The third book I read for today was "How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?" By Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. This story was a great story. It was about how dinosaurs say "I love you" to their families. The dinosaurs did things that most children do, acting up in some manner, then they would apologize somehow by saying "I love you". I thought this was a really neat story in that the main characters were dinosaurs, not people, which children would love. The story also rhymed...more
I thought this book was an average picture book. I thought that the illustrations were not up to par with how imaginative the story was. I really enjoyed the theme of unconditional love and how the dinosaurs acted like young children. I think it is neat that a 5 year old can read this book and relate to prehistoric creatures. I also really enjoyed the text and how it was almost “sing-songâ€. I would probably have this book on hand in my classroom because it allows for a number of different lesso...more
I would recommend this book to parents. In this book, I believe the authors showed how children could do many things that may disappoint their parents but still show that they love them. I thought representing the children as dinosaurs but representing the parents as humans was an interesting and creative twist. I would include this book in a classroom library for children who liked dinosaurs. It is also good for teaching rhyming words. In addition, these books list the names of different types ...more
We have collected these books since my boy was 1. He loved them all. Although he is nearly 10, I bought this new one at the school book fair and it is my favorite. It really captures the love a parent has for their "dinosaur" and the special moments that touch our hearts. Pretty, remarkable for a picture book about dinosaurs. I plan to pass the collection on to the boy when he has his own children so that he can get choked up while reading a picture book:)
The second of the set I've read, and the last. It was fine - the message that parents love you even when you're naughty is important, and though the text is a little awkward it'll do. But I'm just not that big a fan of dinosaurs - and of course this theme has been done many times before. In other words, if your little one can't get enough dinosaurs, explore this series with him. If not, don't bother.
I love all of the dinosaur books, and this is a fun one. However, parenting experts suggest that you shouldn't tell your child you love him because of the things that he does. And in this story, the parent is always saying something like, "but you cleaned up your mess...I love you little one." Oh well, I will still read it for Family Storytime.
More bad behaving dinosaurs ... "You woke in the morning in such a bad mood ... than sat at the table and fussed with your food. But then you blew kisses and waved from the door. I love you , I love you, my dinosaur. Out in the sandbox you threw lots of sand." Apparently dinosaurs do not play nicely with others either.
I first heard of this series from my sister-in-law when I was looking at books to order. This is my first to read and I really like the idea of it all. I like the pictures, and the humor in them is great. It's probably a fun way for children to learn about various behaviors and reasons for/behind actions, emotions, etc.

Children will enjoy this book, but disscussion needs to follow. The dinos do terrible things in this book and turn around and say I love you and all is forgiven. Children should be told that this is not appropriate behavior. However, it does have a good message that parents love their children no matter what.
I didn't think I would ever give one of Yolen's dinosaur books less than two stars, but this one was... meh. This one doesn't really give kids the joy of rudeness that the other books have. No one even got beans stuck up their nose. I feel like this one was written more for adults than kids.
I didn't know there were so many in this series-- are dinosaurs just code names for the little dinosaurs we have running around our houses? I like the pictures and colors and it's fun to see the kinds of dinosaurs that existed way back when.
Mark Teague is a brilliant illustrator, and I adore this series. It takes on behavior questions with wonderful dinosaurs - and Teague puts the name of the dino on every page, so you can always know what kind it is - believe me, kids will ask.
Reading this for Valentine story time. It is super cute, funny and has a nice rhythm to it. The pictures are vibrant and funny. Great for kids who are "dinosaurs" to know that they are loved despite their "snarly" behavior.
Another how do dinosaurs book. If you liked the other ones, I see no reason why you wouldn’t like this one. The pachycephalosaurus about to pet the cat on the end papers just about made the book for me.
The dinosaurs get into all kinds of trouble and make messes, but the main message is that they are loved no matter what. Good for a dinosaur storytime, especially with the large, bright pictures.
This book shows children that they are still loved even if they choose to not do the right things. This is a good book to show children they have someone to care for them no matter what.
If I wasn't such a fan of these series by Yolen-Teague, I would've given this title a 2 star rating. It was really just okay but the redemption is in the concept and the illustrations.
I was totally prepared for this book to be trite and unimaginative. The other books in this series exist to teach principles like polite meal-time manners or bed-time protocol....do kids really need one for showing love? But this book was actually very sweet (made me cry), and it felt more like a book to teach parents a principle--parenting can be rough sometimes, but no one can doubt a child's love in those sweet little moments (you know the ones) that make parenthood all worth it.
I did not find this one as entertaining as the original How Do Dinosaurs say goodnight. My children did not seem as engaged in this book as the original either.

Not as good as the other ones. I also wanted the names of the dinosaurs hidden a bit better in the artwork. We enjoy hunting for them in the other books.
The illustrations in this series of books are gorgeous. Mom is a little disturbed by the bad behaviors modelled, but it all turns out OK in the end.

Why when a first book is successful, is it necessary to beat the concept to death? This doesn't feed a child's imagination, it deadens it.
My Very favorite of Jane Yolen's Dinosaur Series - Especially the end where "when you smile sweetly and hold back your roar..."
