Until the end, which sort of unraveled in an unsatisfactory way, I was planning on giving this 4 stars with the caveat for a first novel. I hate to say that--one would think that a novel is just a novel, whether first or fiftieth, and should be judged independently of such considerations--but while I did enjoy the book, was pulled along by the narrative, and thought that there were some very well written passages, the book lacks a certain amount of polish. Billed as four overlapping love stories set amid a battle between striking miners and scabs in the southern Illinois coalfields c. 1920, this novel tells a good story well. I recommend it to folks who like a good historical novel that's willing to get down and dirty with its characters.
