Doug Cannon
My Grandpa Cannon loved this story, and he often told of a time when he went to see a "picture show" about the Hound of the Baskervilles. "It scared the willies out of me," he said, and then he and his friend had to part ways as my grandpa rode his bicycle home in the dark.

He was thinking about this devil-hound, and then he heard something panting behind him. He pedaled faster and faster, but the panting only got faster and faster too. Then, it was harder and h...more

I love Sherlock Holmes. I love his name, I love his clothes...I just love his style. Reading The Hound of the Baskervilles...I felt like I was reading the first detective novel ever written. Doyle defined the genre--he was the first and the best.

My nine-year-old daughter loves Sherlock Holmes. She has a little Sherlock Holmes hat that we bought for dress as your favorite literary character day, and she loves nothing more than to put on her little brown trench coat from Target, su...more

The key to producing a good adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles in any media is for the producers to understand that perhaps the most important character in the story is not Sherlock Holmes, or Doctor Watson; it's the moor and the atmosphere it generates in all its aspects, whether it be the shadow filled night or the stark brightness of the day. Ian Edginton's adaptation of the famous story into the medium of graphic novel is very faithful to the Conan Doyle ...more

The ultimate tale of the ultimate Victorian hero, The Hound of the Baskervilles is a true masterpiece of the mystery genre, and quite possibly remains the finest mystery novel ever produced -- even if its first appearance was serialized in Strand Magazine.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's unforgettable hero Sherlock Holmes matches his wits against what appears to be a centuries old curse and the ghostly hound that exacts vengeance on the Baskerville ancestors for Sir Hugo Baskerville's sadis...more

The good thing about any Sherlock Holmes book, is that the story doesn't revolve only around some mystery. You can't help but realize the richness of Arthur Conan Doyle's fiction, which makes the Holmes mysteries distinguished from many others. Focusing solely on the mystery (not necessarily a bad thing) increases the chance of the book being forgotten as soon as another comes out. This evidently doesn't happen with the Holmes mysteries, which makes their namesake one of the most memorable chara...more

I just finished teaching this book, and it gave me a new appreciation for the vocabulary and structure of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I was a little nervous about teaching this to 6th graders, as the vocabulary is difficult, and the story is intricately woven together, and can be confusing for younger readers. But as always the girls fell in love with Watson, and were amazed at Sherlock's ability to piece together this puzzle.

This story is set in London and the English countryside of Dar...more

I love reading a classic Sherlock Holmes story, but I've never "seen" an interpretation of a Holmes mystery. The graphics and coloring enhanced both the settings and the emotional responses of the characters to the plot. I thought that the writer also did an excellent job of adapting the material to a new format. All in all, I'm very interested to read/view many more!

Having completed my nth reading of Arthur Conan Doyle’s, The Hound of the Baskervilles, not having read it for a decade or two, I was once again charmed, realizing yet again why the Sherlock Holmes stories have been so enduring for so many readers. This time around I was more aware of the occasional tiny and subtle clues that Doyle, in the person of Watson, provides about Holmes’s personality. Why has this curious figure so captivated readers for more than a century? He is cool, indeed rather...more

Apri "Il mastino dei Baskerville", ti prepa...more

I liked the book, but REALLY liked the British film production that I've seen on PBS. It was the scariest thing I've ever watched--ever! I can't wait to see it again!

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Edginton and Culbard

After an unsuccessful permanent hiatus (and killing off his great detective), Arthur Conan Doyle returned to Sherlock Holmes and penned perhaps his most famous of the sleuth’s stories. The Hound of the Baskervilles was well-regarded and is still read by students and Holmes aficionados every year. I, however, have never read the book and approached this adaptation in near total ignorance. As mentioned recently, I have some familiarity with the characters and their inclinations via the c...more

This was my first time reading a novel starring Sherlock Holmes. I've always wanted to read about Sherlock Holmes after seeing a few movies, etc., but never got around to it. I recently went to see the newest "Sherlock Holmes" movie starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law and decided it was time I sat down and read the stories for myself. (I thought the movie was great by the way. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen) So I put it on my Christmas list and this is the book I g...more

I have never read this book and found it refreshing. The language and writing style were a throwback, and yet I found it exciting. I great mystery too boot.

I think the writing in this was pretty good, but I felt like he wasn't trying that hard to create a real mystery. There are no red herrings in this book, which is surprising, and in almost every instance where someone is being suspicious, they are. Some things are too obvious and you figure out right away what roles most of the characters are playing. I think it does give a good sense of Arthur Conan Doyle's writing style in general, and I believe this was towards the end of his career... perhap...more

Another horrible book that my teacher forced me to read. I thought it was very boring. Mostly because of how old it was and the old setting of the whole story.

Since I've been struggling with my reading (and as a by-product, my blogging) lately, I decided to go back to something tried and true--Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and The Hound of the Baskervilles. Sherlock Holmes never lets me down. Give me a good old Victorian mystery set on the moors of England and watch the reading doldrums fade away.

This is the classic story of Sir Henry Baskerville and legend of the giant hound that haunts his family. Is it really true that a spectral dog hunts dow...more

Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskerville

I think that the Sherlock Holmes series are amazingly written, with fantastic descriptions of characters and places. The mysteries in the books are full of tiny clues that are very intricately and well pieced together.

The fact that the text is written in first person makes the reader feel really close to the action, and this means that the mystery is closer to you and it makes you feel like you are there, solving the problem w...more

So far in this book I have read about Sherlock Holmes and his partner working on a very strange case in which a man died in some conjunction to the family legend and his son the heir has been followed had shoes missing and returned and has been sent a cryptic note. Every lead has gone cold and, the man has even been followed by a man posing as sherlock Holmes. Now Sir henry and sherlock Holmes partner have gone to Baskerville hall for Sir charles to start to live there.

I think the b...more

I am a fan of the Sherlock Holmes books and I am slowly making my way through them in order. This has recently been on TV but I missed it, however a lot of requests started coming in for the book and I will admit this has been in my locker at work since October (approx 3/4 months) oops! So I thought I had better read it so I could send it out to fill the requests. At only 214 pages I managed to complete it in one day and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This was my least favourite Sherlock Holmes read to date. It was the first of the novels that I've read, having stuck to the short story collections before, and while it wasn't particularly bad, I can't be any more enthusiastic than 'okay'.

Holmes and Watson are employed on behalf of Sir Henry Baskerville, who recently inherited the family estate from his uncle. Since the death of their ancestor Hugo Baskerville - commonly believed among moor-folk to have been murdered by a demonic d...more

I could never quite get into Sherlock Holmes as a kid, which really bothered me because I thought I loved ALL mysteries (and wasn't Sherlock Holmes supposed to be the greatest?). I don't want to say that age and the Robert Downey Jr. version of Holmes changed me....but it has. I admit it may mostly be Robert Downey Jr. I thought his Holmes was just awesome. For once you liked the guy, rather than just got tired of his know-it-all-ness.

This famous story is about a huge, demon ho...more

Mystery books have never really been my cup of tea. I've tried some Agatha Christie and told myself that I should read more of them, but I never get around to it. They just don't "call" to me like so many other books.
But Doyle might be the man to change that. This book probably would have gotten 5 stars from me if I hadn't read a referance to it and known the endding before I started. But none the less, it was a great story.
I've seen a couple of Sherlock Holmes movies and...more

Sherlock Holmes
Have you ever made a smart observation? Have you ever solved a small mystery? Well imagine doing this as a profession. In the book Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskerville by Sir Arthur Doyle Sherlock does just that. Sherlock was the best in his line of work until now.
In this book Sherlock Holmes changes a lot. He realizes that he is getting old, and isn’t as cut out for the job as he used to be. Knowing this humbles him and makes him think about his life and t...more

This was the first Sherlock Holmes novel I've ever read, even though I have had The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes sitting on my bookshelf since middle school or earlier (I got it with a 2 for $1 deal at Walmart). I like to read a series in its entirety and in order, and it was frustrating to me to not know which came first and what else there was; but then I realized that I was going to have to let it go and just enjoy what was in front of me (especially if I was going to finish it in time for ...more

While reading:

No wonder this book is often regarded as one of the great mystery novels. From the opening pages with the unidentified guest, Doyle creates an atmosphere of excitement and intrigue. The fast pace of The Hound gives the reader a sense of urgency. I have finished half of the book since this afternoon. The reading itself is quite simple, but the desire to find clues prevented me from merely speeding through the book. I'm intrigued to find out what happens out on the moor.....more

The Hound of the Baskervilles was a great book. I'm a large fan of murder mysteries and the fact that it was Sherlock Holmes just made it better! It was a book that I just opened and read without even wondering how long I had been reading or what page I was on. With these kind of books you always wanna try to pick out who the criminal is half way through the book when you believe all the characters are introduced, and I changed who I thought the villain was five times before choosing and stickin...more

Bisher mein liebstes Sherlock Holmes Buch!

A fun fact :D
I was reading this book late in the night around 2:00 am. My door was closed and there was just my brother and myself in the house that summer night. Deep silence of the night drew me into the horror of the book to an extent that I felt myself haunted by the hound's terror. Mustering all the courage I had, I read on further until suddenly my door burst open and a huge black shape entered my room with a loud roar. Terror shot through out my body but my scream was drowned in my ...more

Sherlock Holmes is a famous detective in England and always had a knack for solving difficult and intriguing cases. He is the best and was made famous in cartoons and movies, but I would never imagine that he first originated in books. Right away, this book caught my attention. I expected a lot from this book and I'm glad to say, I was right. After reading the first page, I knew I had to read it. From the very first chapter, it begins with a simple case and mystery; who was the visitor that visi...more

Arthur Conan Doyle was born as the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.

Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is unce...more
