Sarà per l'alternarsi del punto di vista dei due personaggi e per le scene raccontate come uno script, ma mi è parso di essere davanti ad un film, più che ad un libro. Che comunque non ha niente del thriller psicologico di cui si legge nella quarta di copertina. Vale la pena leggerlo perchè in poche occasioni lo squallore, la deformità, la malattia e la miseria della Londra ottocentesca sono stati descritti in maniera tanto vivida, ricostruendo nei particolari scenari di povertà brulicante di ge...more
Il circo maledetto non si può certo dire una cattiva lettura ma, nonostante abbia provato e riprovato a riprendere la lettura, ho sempre, irrimediabilmente, finito con l'abbandonarla dopo alcune pagine.
La rievocazione storica della Londra vittoriana è sicuramente pregevole e assolutamente realistica, tuttavia ho trovato più d'una difficoltà nell'appassionarmi alla narrazione. A great idea for a novel and a promising start to it with a particular smart title (Walking in Pimlico was apparently colloquial for smartly dressed in Victorian times. Written in the Victorian style Corney Sage seemed a good character who, early in the action, discovered a murdered young lady.

La copertina, le pagine nere, l'idea del libro "ciccione" , il costo contenuto: un plauso alla Newton Compton per il packaging di questa opera prima di Ann Featherstone. Proprio perchè opera prima forse ha dei difetti evidenti: di ritmo, di 'tempi di scoperta', di ingenuità. La Londra Vittoriana come al solito mi attira e vengo comunque risucchiata nel gorgo, il libro enfin si fa leggere ma solo perchè ormai ci sei e porti avanti la storia che pecca di punti di slargo e naufraga nel finale un po...more
L'esordio brillante e l'eccellente impianto documentario - oltre a un paio di trovate narrative tutt'altro che scontate - non bastano a salvare un romanzo che diventa presto insopportabile.

You really have to suspend your disbelief for the ending of this book, and it suffers from some quite confusing mishandlings of timing (not of pace - it's marvellously paced - but the actual timing of scenes and events are sometimes very poorly conveyed) Despite that I loved this book. LOVED it. The sense of time and place, the strength of voice and character, the sheer grit and salt of the whole thing, blew me away. Not quite what I had expected. Or maybe I just wasn't in the right mood but this was a bit of a disappointment. I suppose I was expecting more of a mystery, not a string of silly coincidences. I just couldn’t find the connection with any of the characters. I was curious enough to read what will become of them but I didn’t really care about them.
I'm taking it back to the library. It looks good, but I'm not in the mood for dark Victoriana right now. Maybe some other time ...
Davvero un gran giallo vittoriano. Degno del miglior Sherlock Holmes. Per un'esordiente davvero una grande prova.
Well-written and interesting but would have liked a different solution than the odd one written to end the story.
Like Tipping the Velvet but with added murders - great fun.
This book is amazing. I never thought I'd enjoy a book that lets you know who the murderer is early on and still have surprises. If Charles Dickens were alive today I am pretty sure he'd love this novel. It has all the wonderful Victorian creepiness ( which I adore!)and some really bad ass villains. Actually except for Corney, Joe, and the Shoveltons etc... everyone seems to be some kind of criminal. Some worse than others!I highly recommend this mystery!
Quando ci si vuole cimentare nel romanzo vittoriano, non basta una storia pseudo intrigante, violenza, disagio, qualche colpo da Grand Guignol per farne un romanzo ben riuscito. Tutt'altro, Il circo maledetto (che titolone...), è un libro caotico, mal assemblato, finto.
Ho davvero poco da dire a tal riguardo, basta vedere quanto ci abbia messo per terminarlo. Non lo consiglio.

Lettura godibile soprattutto per il più che apprezzabile lavoro di ricostruzione storica del mondo degli spettacoli e dell'intrattenimento di bassa lega vittoriani.
Un lavoro certosino che però finisce col crollare sotto il peso un finale sorprendente ma ridicolo.

intrigante quanto basta ma non super eccellente quanto ci si aspetta.
This book wasn't amazing to start with and then I had to stop reading it due to being very hormonal. I didn't enjoy the detail that went into describing a dog drowning and I now refuse to read the end of the book.
