This series is dark and edgy- one of the few mystery series set in contemporary times (besides P.D. James' works which I absolutely love) that I enjoy. Inspector Rebus is your typical semi-alcoholic, "doesn't-play-by the rules" type of detective, but does not come across as a cliche. The mysteries are interesting, if dark, and not terribly predictable. Hide and Seek is one of the earliest in the series and although short, is a good intro to the series and the characters.

This was an enjoyable read, certainly much more so than Rankin’s first Rebus novel which in retrospect seems far less polished. The characters, institutional cultures, cynicism and depravity were mostly (though not always) convincing. The narrative pulled you nicely through and there was no point at which I didn’t care what the outcome would be. Although there were surprises in the story Rankin didn’t pull too many rabbits out of hats to tie up loose ends in the way that other detective no...more

Hide and Seek was an average mystery, no better than thousands churned out every year. John Rebus's hard-boiledness, misanthropy, whatever, was most often just unpleasant: there are much better books in this series. I found myself forgetting the characters as I read, couldn't keep track of who was who, had to turn back to earlier chapters to refresh my memory.
Skip Hide and Seek unless you are such a fan you must read every Rebus book.

"Hide and Seek expanded one of the themes from Knots and Crosses - Rebus' relationship with his non-policeman brother - for a complex web of pairs of police/non-police brothers whose relationships cross the boundary of legality. It's also the most political of the first three novels, in that Rebus' investigation into the lonely death of a drug addict takes him into the highest echelons of Edinburgh society (there is a scene featuring the Temptation of John Rebus by the devils of social stat...more

another review which suffers from the inability to make half a star. It's a 3.5, actually, rounding up to a 4 even though I don't think it's that good.
#2 in the series featuring Inspector John Rebus. In this installment, John Rebus is called in to investigate the death of a drug addict in a dilapidated flat in one of the worst parts of Edinburgh. He notices a lot of strange things right away, and shares his findings his fellow officers who do not seem to care. It's just another OD....more

Zijn latere boeken uit de reeks - Set In Darkness, Fleshmarket Close, The Naming Of The Dead ...more

I finally did it. I picked up a book and 1/3 of the way through I realized I had already read it...of course I had to finish it because I didn't know exactly how it ended....and good thing he is a good writer. And it made me look at the next one of his I had to read, and realized I already read that one too....grrrrr. At least that one I could return to the bookstore. On to STrip Jack, which I *think* I haven't read.

3 1/2 to 4 stars ;) This one had me running in circles in the beginning. But Rebus is one strong character and he kept me going. It all came together in the end and looking back, it was a good story. I also like how some of the characters from Knots and Crosses popped up. I'll be on the look out for the next book :)

Oh the goodness continues in teh second in the series - with a strange occult twist thrown in that seems to be ultimately a bit of a red herring, thank godness. Emily and I are both hooked - we've got two more in line, and I think are joyfully committed to the entire seventeen titles in the series....

recommends it for:
fans of police procedurals
Second in the John Rebus series. Rankin doesn't give up when a drug user's "overdose" appears to be connected with witchcraft...or is it connected to gay prostitutes...or the suicide of... Rankin leaves out a bit of the process of unraveling the mystery so that the ending comes as a surprise.

Pacy and well plotted, the characters feel real and have those human qualities often missing in thrillers. I'm re-reading the Rebus series and clearly they're going to be a welcome return, like that old friend who you bump into unexpectedly and then get to know all over again.

Pretty good as I work my way through the Rebus series. I liked the fact that Rebus was caught up short by the attempt to frame him. His character begins to flesh out a bit more as he harasses Holmes.

Didn't really enjoy this book. Was slow, and the story felt unimportant, i.e. would not of been investigated with such keeness in the real world. Much prefer the TV version of Rebus, the book doesn't seem to show the dark side of him, unlike the TV version. Usually I always prefer the book to TV versions, this time I make an exception.

I'm having fun reading the Rebus detective series -- set in Edinburgh, so it's fun to hear place names and streets I know of (& learn more), and they're fun, quick, entertaining stories that draw you along.

Again, LOVE this stuff. I don't mind reading a foreign language (if you think Scottish is a form of English, you have another thing coming.)

This is the second in the Inspector Rebus series from Ian Rankin. Like the first book, Knots and Crosses, Hide and Seek features the witty and gritty mind of Edinburgh's police inspector as he tries to solve a mystery that for much of the book isn't sufficiently understood to be a bona fide "case". But Rebus finds it is no less dangerous.
This isn't the best mystery, but Rebus comes through as a reliable character. The plot isn't as well conceived as other Rankin books.

This is a great introduction to Rankin and Rebus. You could do worse than start here. The plot is sufficiently involved to keep you guessing but the story will not take you long to finish. Rankin does not hide behind the spires of Morse's Oxford or the sunshine of Bergerac's Channel Islands. While reminding you of the importance of Edinburgh and many of its top spots he does not forget that there is a fair amount of poverty and lowlife that combine to paint the full picture. This novel does not ...more
