I started reading this to my almost-one-year-old last night and for the first few pages I thought, "Oh wow, this is exceptionally lame."
It's Fish the Fish!
It's Duck the Duck!
It's Mouse the Mouse!
I'm reading this out loud, trying to be enthusiastic but in my head thinking, "Seriously? This is the whole freakin' book? Somebody actually made money off of naming a character Fish the Fish?!"
But then, the joke was on me when the book took a very goofy, surprising twist at the end. The last few pages...more

Do you have a little one learning to read at the earliest level? In our house, we love, love Mo Willems. He's just launching a new series for kids just learning to read: Cat the Cat. This series is geared to the youngest audience of any of the books he's made, but they have the classic Mo Twists. My favorite parts: they make us giggle, and they make my kindergartner want to read them again and again.

Cat the Cat is in search of friends. So she wanders down her street, meeting new friends along th...more

I was expecting good, if not great, things from this new Mo Willems series, but was really not impressed. The content felt more appropriate to a board board than a picture book with concepts that were really dumbed down. I think the characters in Who is That? also cam eout really bland and don't have the outrageous range of expression that Pigeon, Elephant, and Piggie have. It's certainly not bad, but I think that the pacing of the book and the consistant presentation of the pictures from page t...more

Cat the Cat sure likes her friends, and she introduces the very youngest readers to her world, where there are surprises waiting! (Goodreads summary)

Cat the Cat, Who Is That? by Mo Willems is perfect for toddlers with shorter attention spans, or for preschoolers & kindergartners learning to sound out words. Aimed at a young audience, it has both regular text and word ballons, plain backgrounds, word repetition, and a variety of bug eyed friends of cat. The theme is friendship. The humorous i...more

I really enjoyed the simplicity of this book. The repetitive nature of it is helpful for new readers to learn words. It is also helpful in learning animal names. While reading this book to the boys I babysit, after a page or two they are able to chime in and read along since there is a pattern of "cat the cat, who is that?" which I love! I not only enjoyed the simplicity of the context, but the illustrations as well. Overall, I think this is a great book for young children!

Absolutely enthralling! This book was such a delight. The illustrations were super cute and humorous. I loved turning the page because I knew there would be some hilarious animal on the next page. One thing I love about Mo Willems is how he works in twists - even in his simplistic children's books. I loved this book and I can't wait to read the rest in the series.

Mo Willems.....the man is a genius. Elephant and Piggie are the most perfect books for beginning readers. These are for emergent readers. My preschool nephew loved this when I gave it to him, and my struggling first graders did as well. Predictable. Funny. What else can I say? If I wasn't so happily married, I might have to stalk Mo.

I will add that if you read this without a young person on your lap or nearby, you may miss the brilliance of it.

Harriet is a transitional reader. That means she can read simple words and is starting to wrap her head around sounding out longer words. Mo Willems has a two series aimed at readers like her: the Elephant and Piggie books and a new series staring Cat the Cat.

Since Harriet's such a cat person, we started on the Cat the Cat series first. The one she picked was Cat the Cat, Who is That? by Mo Willems. It introduces Cat the Cat and all her friends. It begins pretty simply with the sorts of animals...more

This is my 20-month-old's current favorite. What a shame that it has been hiding away in the Easy Reader section of the library so we hadn't found it before. There's a whole world of picture books over there we need to discover because we've only been in the children's section.

The book is extremely simple and quick to read. The characters are cute. Our family has had many chain reactions of "blarggie, blarggie" since we first read it.
Amy
Blargie, blargie!

I checked this book out without knowing this was the author of the well-loved Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. I only realized it when the Pigeon made a cameo appearance.

I have to admit that I wasn't digging this book at all until I got to the blargie, blargie. ♥

Presentation is misleading. It really works best for the sticky-fingered rugrat crowd as it is so very simple, and therefore it should be a board book rather than a picture book. Other than that, it does what it sets out to do (help an earliest beginning reader learn and stay motivated and keep mom/caregiver close for the tricky words and laugh every time for many rereadings) and it does it very well.

Just when I think I about have Mo Willems figured out, he cranks out another work of unexpected genius. Now, meet Cat the Cat and her friends in this delightful new picture book series. I'd love to see these in early reader paperbacks, but that could be awhile, because we need to take the time to appreciate Mo's deft hand at illustration in full picture book glory.

This story is about a cat who loves to say hi to all her friends, but during this process she encounters someone new she has never seen. She is very optimistic and with open arms embraces her new friend and embraces his new name: Blargie! Blargie!

This would be a good book to read at any age because friendships are important to life.

Question: Why doesn't Goodreads want me to find this book? I had a devil of a time searching for it.

Anywho, this book is simpler than Willems' other books, but that makes it great for a younger audience or kids who are trying to read on their own. And, of course, the illustrations are superb. I also like the Pigeon cameo.
Nadine
Perfect for the very beginning reader who has only mastered a few basic words (such as, obviously, "cat" and "who"). There's not really much of a story, but it's still interesting, and my daughter loved the feeling of accomplishment she got when she was READING! I wish these had been around for my older daughter in time.
Douglas
Simplistic, formulaic beginning. Unoriginal names (Cat the cat, Mouse the mouse). So why is it so good? Cat's antics are adorable. Also, the story text is simple and repetitive for early readers, yet the dialog of the animal friends is challenging. Then there is the twist at the end. Good picture book.
Jen
Cat introduces us to many of her friends in this early reader book. My boys, ages 3 & 4, liked the repetition of the characters such as Cat the Cat, Fish the Fish, and Duck the Duck. They even picked up on the illustration with the Pigeon in it from Willems' other famous series! Great short, easy reader.

We love Mo Willems' stories. This new series, however, is not our favorite. It has a simple narrative and simple illustrations and I think the preschool set will love it, but our girls are growing out of these books. It has a repetitive narrative that encourages children to participate and "read" along.

What can I say? I LOVE MO WILLEMS!!! This is such an easy and cute book! My storytime kiddos are anywhere from infants to 4-yr-olds, and they can handle this book. I love anytime I can get wild and crazy while reading, so the Blargie Blargie is perfect! I.love.Mo.Willems.

I'm not on the fanwagon for this author. However, he creates
deep characters in a few words. This stories are character driven. Children love to read them over and over--even by themselves--aloud they have wonderous possiblities. A teach them how to read fave-- with humor!
Alexandria Jakupovic
In this Mo Willems adventure for young readers, Cat the Cat introduces the reader to all of her friends. When Cat the Cat runs into the blargie speaking alien she seems nervous at first, but her big heart lets her friendliness show and she makes a new friend.

Cat the Cat introduces her friends to the readers of this book.

I don't know if I would care for this book as much if it weren't for me hearing r. Mo Willems read it in person. His expressions were hilarious and are stuck in my head everytime I read this book!

Lately, Zoey and I are loving anything written by Mo Willems, and the Cat the Cat series is no exception. This book was particularly appealing to Zoey because, after one time of Mom reading through it, she could 'read' it back to me day after day. Loved the illustrations and the simple story line.
Cara Farmer
This is a very simple and cute book. This would be great for preschoolers. It's a great way to teach making new friends. This is also simple writing so it would be great for teaching a child to read or a good way to give a struggling reader confidence
Kelly
Oh how I love Mo Willems' books! I was pleasantly surprised that this very simple easy reader was still full of Mo Willems' signature humor and emotion. I will definitely be recommending this line to the most beginning of beginning readers.
Liliana
Great book to read aloud to a kindergarten class. In this story, Cat is able to introduce everyone he knows. Then, someone else appears and Cat does not know. Students will be engaged and shouting out which animals Cat will introduce next.
Susan
This is a great easy reader for very young readers, along with all the others from this series. It is silly and fun. Has become a bed time favorite of Michael, who loves to read them to mommy before I read him some bed time stories.
Emma
The simplest Willems for the youngest use, but really perhaps too simple. I agree with a reviewer who stated this might be better suited as a board book than in picture book form. It's saved by the alien/monster at the end ("Blarggie Blarggie!") and a sweet message, though.

I'm not a big fan of Mo Willems but this book is a little funny. And it's very simple, so my son can read it all by himself. Good humor for two to 4 year olds.

Technically I suppose this is a book I have read to my son. His first word was cat, so I am checking out lots of cat books from the library. This is lots of fun, for 10 month olds and their parents alike!
