Pearce and Mark..... HOLY HOTNESS!

A fan is needed, because, whew...their chemistry and lovin' is smokin' sizzling, hot sweetness...and I loved it❤

BUT...what I loved most is that this book made me happy~ it has mystery, action and a sizzling hot romance....gosh, this book totally fits my today's mood and I loved every page of it. I liked these MCs. The gruff FBI agent who is protecting his witness who can think on his feet. Had some nice sarcasm, sexy scenes and a nice little story with it. I wouldn't want to be Aaron's boss at work given how he pushes things and smarts off, but, he also gets the job done and that's what matters. Mark appears to be a really good balance to Aaron's personality. Want more about these guys as their relationship still developing when the novella ended.

So…you know when a book is bad…like indisputably bad…and deep down you just know it’s bad…but (*ahem*) you can’t help but kinda like it anyway?

Welcome to Holed Up.

Insta-love.
No explanation for the attraction.
No research about the facts of the story.
No plausible way some of it plays out.
Ridiculous out-of-character actions.
A random ex-boyfriend appearance.
Over-over-and-back-over-the-top bad guy.

BUT…it only takes this: alpha FBI MC!!!!! Hook, line, and sinker…I’m in.

This is my first Hank Edwards book and overall I enjoyed it. I do like a witness protection style book and there was plenty to like here.

Basic premise is that one guy, Mark, overhears a terrorist plot to blow something up, in Chicago, on Valentines Day. He just doesn't hear where or what is targetted. He informs the FBI, and ends up under the care of Special Agent Aaron Pearce. Pearce has flown in to Chicago from Washington DC to protect Mark. They smell a rat in the FBI ranks and it works out...more

Wow, I'm surprised this book haven't got much higher rating!
I absolutely loved it, I think it's fantastic! I got sucked in from the beginning and couldn't put it down 'till I finished it and mind you it was 5 a.m.

Both characters're awesome - really male, tough, but deep inside longing for something more, than one night stand (although the one in the beginning of the book was pretty hot), but are afraid, beacause of the previous bad experience. I loved the pacing of this story - suspence, action...more

I loved this book and found it addictive reading - the more you went along the more you wanted. By the looks of it, it was out a couple of years before the "Sanctuary" series and I must admit that it is better. The sexual tension build up was terrific but you knew that Pearce was going to let his guard down and let the bad guys get the better of him for a while. Really enjoyed this first book of the series. Yes, it's formulaic and has been done many times before with different agents, different bad guys etc., but this is a goodie and gets 4 stars and a from me!!

I had a difficult time liking Pearce at first. He's a know-it-all; he's obnoxious, conceited, has a haughty attitude; he's also very good-looking and very good at his job. As I got to know him better, I began to admire his expertise and realized that he wasn't as tough as he pretended to be. He just needed someone to call him on it and that's where Mark comes in. Mark evokes feelings in Pearce which make him want to get to know him better and admit feelings he couldn't even admit to himself before that time. It was interesting to watch him change. It felt good to see him become vulnerable but, at the same time, still remain the competent expert he's trained to be.

Although Mark comes across as abrasive and uncooperative at first, it's understandable considering he's been yanked away from his job, his family, his home, etc. to be put under witness protection. I admired him for putting himself at risk to be a witness to bring down a terrorist group. He proves time and again how smart, strong, and brave he is. He keeps Pearce on his toes by not letting him get by with any of the avoidance tactics Pearce frequently uses. He admits his physical attraction to Pearce but isn't sure the feeling is mutual.

When I read this story I felt as if I was watching an action adventure show. It's fast paced and has some interesting twists in the plot which surprised me in some cases and upset me in others. It's quite well written and for all the different directions it takes it comes together nicely. The characters are well designed and it was easy to become attached to them. Once Mark and Pearce are together, they practically burn holes in the sheets, the couch, the shower, well, just everywhere. It's quite erotic and explicit enough to make me feel like a voyeur. This book has it all—interesting characters, mystery, intrigue, danger, passion, and a very steamy romance. If you like books in which you don't know what's coming next, then you may enjoy 'Holed Up'. Thanks, Hank, for the exciting adventure.

What a pleasant surprise to read an author (new for me) that penned a sexy-romance, suspenseful thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed Holed Up and would recommend the title to anyone looking for a thrilling, edge-of-your-seat-ending, romantic (and erotic) love-story! Simply great and I cannot wait to read the sequel. There is a sequel, right Hank!

Holed Up is in the same vein as Josh Lanyon, John Simpson, to name a couple masculine (hot!) suspenseful/thrillers!

I suppose this was an okay read. I didn't really connect with any of the characters, there was little to no depth to them and the plot was frankly contrived and unbelievable. With books that have an FBI/bureau of whatever spin it's already hard to suspend your disbelief, but when it's not done well, that just makes it that much harder to enjoy the book. Really liked this. So much that I immediately purchased books 2&3. Love the cabin/stuck with you type scenario. Pearce (hot, alpha FBI agent) pushes all the right buttons for me. The plot revolves around FBI Agent Pearce who is called in to protect witness Mark. They of course are sent on the run and while hiding out, discover mutual passion before the somewhat corny resolution to the mystery of a terrorist organization trying to kill Mark. While the mystery/action subplot takes up the last third of the book, it’s rather obvious and unfortunately the romance between Mark and Pearce isn’t much more interesting.

Mark supposedly overhears a terrorist group planning an attack and like a good citizen calls the police to report this knowledge. This plunges him into a trip into protective custody that lasts a few days and several attempted murders. He manages to stay calm, collected, and intelligent through most of it while attempting to ignore his growing lust for Pearce. Given Mark’s lack of relationship prowess, his occasional vulnerable side combined with quick wit and sarcastic comebacks give him a bit of depth. His attachment to Pearce after two or three days felt awkward instead of romantic as if that was expected of men involved rather than their true feelings.

Similarly, Pearce is given to expected reactions than believable emotions. The reader is first introduced to him as he pouts over his assignment than picks up a random guy for the night to have some rather self-involved, arrogant sex. This is complete with the classic line “you’ve never been fucked until you’ve been fucked by me.” So clearly Pearce has an attitude and that characteristic is his most obvious one even while he does his best to protect Mark. Unfortunately for an experienced agent Pearce makes mistake after mistake while babysitting Mark, including sleeping with his charge. But Mark and Pearce do admit to an emotional bond with each other that is unusual for them. This romantic declaration is signified by the willingness to swallow each other’s “load”.

So there were a few problems with the romantic nature between the two men just as the action portion took quite a bit of suspension of disbelief to read along. Numerous details and coincidences played into the story and several times you have to simply accept the impossible as fact and move on or the story falls apart. Elements such as assigning an FBI agent from DC to watch a witness for the Michigan Bureau (because all their agents are busy?), surprise fire alarms, the villain just showing up out of the blue and his identity being hilariously unbelievable even to Mark’s ex-boyfriend very conveniently showing up weeks early to help out. All of these nuances were important to the action and resolution of the mystery, but didn’t help the story even if you can just go along without worrying about the plausibility of the story line.

Overall while the writing and dialogue had some ridiculous moments and definite cheesy aspects, the story was simply not very interesting and was difficult to get into. The writing was rather clean without obvious errors to annoy and the characters have some enjoyable and fun dialogue scenes. The story reads incredibly fast so this wasn’t a horrible book by any means but I found my attention drifting frequently as there was very little that held my interest and I didn’t connect to either character or the situation. Even as I let the troubling details slide for the sake of the story, the remaining elements just weren’t interesting together to make the book riveting and exciting, even with the extended action scenes.

Now, now, don't get your boxers in a bunch, men...more I was expecting for this novella to be pretty explicit, Hank Edwards is once again one of those authors like Ryan Field and Gavin Atlas from whom female romance readers like me dug out stories when we started to look around for more, we were eager, we wanted more than the market gave us, and we pounced upon those poor male authors asking for romance... but they are erotic authors, and erotic authors mostly for men, what did they know about romance? Now, now, don't get your boxers in a bunch, men can write romance, and also a good romance, but these authors have first in mind the erotic part of the story, and then, maybe the romance. And if you read this novella by Hank Edwards you will understand what I mean, the two characters first connect on a physical level, and also in a quite primordial way, and then realize that perhaps there is something more than sex.

Aaron Pierce, FBI special agent, is not at all happy to be assigned as babysitter for a important Homeland Security witness. Maybe to loosen up the tension before the mission, he decides to prowl the night clubs and takes home a young nice man for a bit of no strings attached sex. The young man is willing but a bit skittish... a good romance hero will woo him and maybe let him go... Agent Pierce (who BTW lied about his name), almost forces the man to bed. All right, the young man enjoys every minute, and he is also pretty easy and cool afterward, but still, I felt a bit of uneasiness. My gentle romance reader mind probably would have been appeased by a somewhat more tactful behavior of Pierce, and instead he is all for the attitude, big bam, good, all right, thank you. And poor young man is soon forgotten. At this point the romance reader thinks, well, why you presented him to me, if he is not the true love of Pierce? Ding dong romance reader, this is NOT a romance, this is sex, this is hot monkey sex behind the sheets, this is an alternative to Pierce to do an assolo under the shower... cute young man is NOT Pierce's true love.

Innocent romance reader is not so much convinced by the theory, but she continues to read. Pierce now meets Mark, the man he has to protect, and the trouble start from moment one. They have to run away, and they cannot trust no one, not even Pierce's FBI colleagues. Big bad special agent Pierce is in trouble, and cute and pretty witness Mark helps him: they can hide in Mark's ex-lover apartment, it's empty and his ex-lover is out of town. Mmm, don't know if in a real dangerous situation this could have been a good solution, but it gives to Pierce and Mark the chance to be in close proximity for a long period of time, and since it happens that also Mark is gay... but two factor prevent them to jump in bed as soon as they are alone (three if you count also the danger outside...): special agent Pierce has some reserves to be involved with a man he is supposed to protect, and Mark doesn't think that an handsome, strong man like Pierce is interested in him (yes, Mark sees Pierce in a different way than the romance reader... oh right, also Mark is a man!).

And so Pierce and Mark actually spend some time together talking and arguing, rather than having sex... and Pierce realizes for the first time that, maybe, he is interested in something more than sex! See?!? Romance reader is happy, it's a proof more than a bit of romance helps in life... Oh well, it's also true that the only thing that apparently Mark sees in Pierce is his handsome and big body (and big something else...), and it's not that they talk so much, but at least they end in bed AFTER sharing pieces of their life and not before.

Anyway, the sex is hot, very graphic and acrobatic, a lot of fluid exchange with hidden symbols ("I wanted to have something of you inside me when I left to get our food" there is something of primordial here...). So yes, Holed Up (even the title is all a plan...) is not for sure your pink glasses perspective romance, but I have to say that I liked it. It was a novella, so not so long, and its main purpose was to be sexy, but it has also a story, and Pierce has the chance to evolve, even that first anonymous sex encounter he had at the beginning, in the end served to its scope, it gives to Pierce a parameter to compare his new story with Mark, and it gives to the romance reader the chance to see the real Pierce, and to appreciate more how he will change.

Definitely a five star. This is my first m/m FBI book. I have hooked to the book from page one to the end. Not just that, both of the men are hot. They are hairy!

I would love to read more about Pearce and Mark's relationship. It would be so cool if there is a sequel to it. Perhaps Morgan decided to chase him in DC and Mark happens to be with Pearce. That is something I would love to read! *hint hint Hank Edwards please* :D ;D :D

A couple of the major sex scenes are what I tend to think of as "guy porn"—harsher and grittier than most gay romantic erotica, with lots of hole pounding and load shooting and a sprinkling of cheesy porn-movie dialogue. It's not really my thing but it's easy enough to skim, and the rest of the story, including the action plot and the emotional arc of the main characters, makes it well worth it.

I liked Pearce and Mark. I wish the book was longer, so I could have invested more emotions in their relationship. I enjoyed Hank Edwards writing style. It was straightforward and a little gruff. Holed Up is a quick read (Novella length) and delivers a lot in such a short space. I look forward to his next novel.

One of my favorite authors, Hank Edwards consistently delivers captivating stories. Holed up is no exception. WE see the sexual tension between Pearce and Mark build with lots of diversions thrown in. Definately worth the read.
