I really don't know what to say. This one was one of those books that grossed the hell out of me. It felt more like author was trying to voice his own perverse fantasies rather than trying to tell a story to a reader. I think this story should have stayed in his head.

I find teacher-student relationships intriguing, but this one was just weird. There was no worries about breaking the rules, about it being wrong or unethical, or the consequences of it. No, just "Lock the door behind you, let's do...more

I consider this fetish (BDSM in this case) erotica, not erotic romance because if you take out the sex and all of the emotion involved with the sex, there's not much left. What makes this book special is the high quality of the writing (poetic in a VERY non-purple prose kind of way) and the intensity of the emotion portrayed--very unexpected (for me, anyway) in a first-person (male!) POV. Yet the sex and the emotion maintained that rough edge I do expect from a man's POV (ever read any M/M writt...more

I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.

Wow. I knew this was going to be an unusual read before I finished the first page. God, the way this man writes! This read was about so much more than a good story. First and foremost it reminded me that richness of life comes from the experience, and that feeling adds to it's depth.

Now the review:

I read two books this week from the Dom's perspective within the BDSM culture. Both dom's were descri...more

Connor and Emma began their relationship as a teacher and student. Light interactions lead to lingering conversations that lead to a declaration of a public secret: Connor is a writer & poet. His main topic is sex and he specializes in BDSM. They're drawn to each other, taking elicit chances & sharing the rush of frenetic sex. Emma willfully fights their burgeoning attraction, and Connor pushes her beyond her boundaries to make her face her true desires. He revels in her fierce submissio...more

The first half was great. The teacher/student dynamic really shone as the fantasy played out in the classroom. As the story started to migrate into real life outside of school, some of the magic was lost for me.

It was nice to read a book from the guys PoV. Some of the terminology had me chuckling a little bit because it was written as only a guy would see things, but I guess that's the point, and honesty is a good thing.

I found the book to be a good read - very hot in the first half, and hot in...more

A "How To" article pointed me to Dr. Mabeuse's "A Good Student" as an example of how to write a good bdsm story. I read the first chapter and then wasted no time to purchase the entire novel and download it to my Kindle.

The story is told from the POV of Connor Devlin, a poetry professor by trade, writer by choice, who encounters the beautiful Emma in one of his classes. She shows an interest in one of his bdsm stories, one thing leads to another, and before Connor knows what's happening, he's go...more

I read a lot of BDSM-themed books, and only about 1/4 of them are even worth mentioning.
Dr. Mabeuse gets it right every time. I became an instant fan and auto-buy anything with his name attached to it. This man knows what he is writing about, intimately. He is an intuitively smart man, which I think makes him an even more amazing writer.

With some male-written erotica, emotional ties can be weak or even non-existent, (which is fine - down & dirty erotica just for the sake of it can be just wh...more

This book is really a 3.5 star. However, since I round down, it shows up as 3. Half way through this book, my heart was slowly breaking for Connor. He started out wanting sex only but as it says in the story blurb, he falls for Emma. We never really know until the end if Connor will be able to keep Emma or not. Reading the story from his POV was disconcerting for me. Even though he is years older than Emma, he's a bit immature emotionally. He's not the best of Dom either. I don't want him to be...more

I started reading this and I got halfway through and decided to take a break from it for awhile.... But I did finally finish it.....

At the moment, I don't really know how I feel about "A Good Student"... I'll will let you know when I do. lol

I'm not sure what to say about this book? It was given to me by a friend who thought I would love it because I liked the Fifty Shades books. I don't think it's fair to compare because this book because they aren't the same. The only connection is the Dom/Sub text of the book. There is a love story to some degree in this story but it delves mostly into erotica. For me, the interesting thing about this book is that it's told from a male point of view. Most erotica I've read is from a womans view. I...more

I have mixed feelings about this one. This was read as a group read, so I didn't pick it for myself. It was beautifully written. Lots of prose and inner dialogue. A lot of the imagery was unique, probably because it was erotica told from a man's point of view. (I'm thinking of Emma's orgasm being described as a snapping dog. Makes sense, but I've never thought of it that way.) It was really gritty and hot, but I didn't like the name-calling, even if Emma loved it. I think I'm mixed because I nev...more

This was an interesting book. My first erotica written by a man. It was a story that ALMOST went somewhere great. Connor was trying to make Emma realize something in "erotic time and space", and somehow she did, I just don't know how. I didn't get what he was trying to make her realize.

Also, he's twice her age (50?) and 235lbs, string but I have no other descriptors of him. That really bothered me. I thought I had him pictured but then he said he weighed 235lbs, so that blew my description away...more

how to start...ok here it goes:
No matter what someone might tell you about the notion of this book, you never know what to expect.
it's simply like this: everyone will have their own perspective on it.
as for me, i can say it made me feel so many things at the same time, love, hate, disgust, anger, wisdom, beauty, nature, spirituality, simplicity, complexity,erotica..but most importantly, Passion!
yes, Passion!

This was strangely fascinating. The writing is rich and emotional and perfectly lucid at times and then switches without warning to crude and crass and downright filthy. I suppose that was the intention.

The start of their relationship is illicit at best and the illegal side of the student/teacher issue is never explored or ever really mentioned again.

I also do not recommend that this book be used as an intro to BDSM. Because that's not what is going on here. A fully consensual BDSM relationship...more

I've written too much to the author already. This was a gut-wrenching, breathtaking, heartstopping work, a fact that had almost nothing to do with the sex. It was the most honest, the most realistic, the most raw book about sex and love and games, about the definitions of dominance and submission and giving and taking and how there are no black and whites even in a world where you think that's all there are. It contains graphic sex and BDSM, but it is written lyrically, with brilliance and compa...more

This was quite a different type of book than I'm used to. A BDSM love story from the point of view of the Dom. I've never been a fan of stories narrated in that way. But this author did a great job expressing some truly deep emotional scenes from the Male's point of view. I still missed knowing what was going on in the female's mind. But the story still held me.

It was quite a different flavor than when a female writes the story. Not quite as Soft. It was a little more "rough" and "edgy". A few t...more

I am surprised I never wrote a review about this book.

There is high praise surrounding this story, and I nearly broke my neck trying to get myself a copy. Now, I am not sure why I bothered.

The book isn't bad. It's just that, in my opinion, it's nothing special. All I can figure is that it received high praise because of how well it's written, when usually hardcore BDSM erotica stories don't tend to be written by talented writers.

I read a fair number of romantic themed stories, some with BDSM the...more

What I loved most about this book was that it was told solely from the Dom's POV. It was insightful and refreshing to get into Connor's head, as most of the BDSM books I'd read were from the the female submissive's POV. Between the BDSM and the forbidden teacher-student relationship, the taboos made this book sizzle. It was more than just the sex though, the relationship between Connor and Emma was complicated and emotionally intense.
Hands down one of the best BDSM books I've ever read.

this book was a quick listen compared to others i usually listen to, such as the Iliad... God, still trying to get through it lol

"GS" has a slight bdsm theme [slight imho] as far as sexual control...but nothing else beyond "restraining" the submissive. i think it is just something to read if you are bored or cant sleep, which is what i did. a professor notices a very pretty girl in class and when the time is right, seduces her with his secret craving - yet she has her own secrets

I really enjoyed this story. I chose it based on the BDSM themes and because it was written by a male. I certainly wasn't expecting something so real to life or cerebral(as cerebral as a BDSM book can be anyway ;). This story almost read like a memoir that lets us delve into the mind and heart of a Dom towards his sub. Of course there's lots of hot sex but there was a depth to the story that's suprising. I definitely recommend it.

Ok, so I had to walk away from this book after I read it before I could review it. I was very disturbed after reading this. Not by the content, but my reaction to it. I was enthralled, intrigued, and more than a bit aroused by this book, and I didn't want to be. But, I just got it. I got what Conner was trying to say, I got what he was trying to have with Emma.

The whole story just worked for me. From the degradation and humiliation, to the insane amount of sex this 50 yr. old man could have. It...more

This is probably one of the most well-written pieces of erotica I have ever read. Mr. Mabeuse is an awesome story-teller and has a grasp on titillation that I've never come across in a man before! He has taken a forbidden subject and woven a novel that will leave you breathless and begging for more!
Rie McGaha...fantasy that keeps you up

I really enjoyed this book to the point where I resented going to work and doing housework because it was interfering with reading it. Not only was it the first erotic book I had read written by a man, it was also the first from a Doms pov - It was well written with great dialogue, it had hot sex but was also emotional.
Emma
I'm giving this book a 3.5, I thought it was good and raunchy but man could Conner talk. Blah, blah, blah, blah... was all I read/heard for like 100 pages. Once he realised he "loved" her that was all he talked about. And Emma, she was annoying at times. Why did she have such a hard time coming to terms with her sex life? She sure was acting it out, it almost seemed like it was part of a game to me. Maybe she was more in control then she lead on. IDK.
Also, why take her to a museum to show her a...more

This book was good/okay. The writing was very good and smart but a bit boring after awhile.

I was really looking forward to this book because it is written by a male and told from the dominant point of view. It's hard to find male authors in this genre and then a story told by the dominant?? It's the first I've come across. I was expecting... I'm not really sure what but I figured it would be strong instead it was kinda soft and very philasophical. I'm not interested in philosophy especially whe...more

I thought it was a great start to this book. The sex scenes were very intense but in a good way. What I really didn't like though was the name calling that Connor did to Emma, its not my thing at all and it really put me off and thats why I give this book 3 stars. I think I really did like and enjoy Mr Mabeuse's writing style though. If name calling isn't an issue for you I think you will really like this book.

For that's what sex is about ultimately - communion, ultimate communion, the fusing of two beings into one, their feelings, emotions, hearts, minds and souls, and whether it's done with kisses and caresses or whips and chains, it doesn't matter in the end.

Amazing book! Last part (basement scene) is my favourite.

2 and a half .Was good. I liked that it was written from the male's perspective. I must say however that I was expecting this book to be better than it was. Definitely sexy but I can't say that I really understood the connection beyond the bedroom, it would've been nice to have had "more"

Really 3.5, This story has some truly beautiful insights and passages, and then it also has some insights and passages that are irritating as hell. Our hero, Connor, totally overthinks everything. But, he admits to it so it's like he drags us down into his rabbit hole with him. I like that it's a guy author writing a dude's point of view. He did throw in a few of "I know she was feeling..such and such" that had my eyes rolling. I did really appreciated the authentically male perspective, but it...more

“I think we live our lives in other people's hearts and minds. Alone by ourselves we're not very much good at all. But when we let someone else in with their stories and all their sights and sounds and songs and smells and sensations, we suddenly start building up libraries, filling boxes and drawers with them, books and shelves and chests...” 6 people liked it
