This book was straight up Sarah Dessen (Queen of teenage girly books that all have the same plot but are somehow still good), but I was disapointed by the choice of main character.
I've heard all about the bad boy boyfriend, the pregnant best friend, the writer mom, but I wanted to hear the story from the point of Cameron! How out of the blue would it be to read a story about a boy who moves into a new town and befriends a pregnant girl whose baby's father is dead?...(and perhaps is in love with...more

This book hit so close to home for me. I'm sitting here filled up with so much emotion over this book. Scarlett's story is close to my own with her unexpected pregnancy as a teenager and her struggles. I even had my own 'Halley' to help me (my bf Sara) along the way to take care of me, tell me everything was ok, and just to be there. Everyone should have that best friend like the book says. I loved this story, although I wish there was a better ending. Something to really solidify it so you had...more
In this YA novel, Halley and her best friend Scarlett learn what it means to support one another through thick and thin. In the opening pages, Scarlett loses her boyfriend to a motorcycle accident...and finds out that she is pregnant with his child. Her choice to keep the baby, Halley's suffering relationship with her mother, and her first boyfriend add to the plot of the novel immensely. Macon, Halley's new boyfriend, is pushing her to lose her virginity to him, making it seem as though it isn'...more

This book surprised me. Initially it was a solid 2 stars, eventually reaching 4 and settling on 3.5. I was surprised by it because initially it seemed so incredibly dumb. The novel opens with Halley getting a phone call that her bff's boyfriend has been killed in an accident. Now, this is high drama. But does anyone seem fazed? Mmm, not really. Scarlett, the bff in question, is washing dishes while she relays the news to Halley, and Halley's mom seems pretty chilled about it, not even wanting...more

I don’t have a best friend. Sure I have friends. Friendly acquaintances, plenty. But not a best friend like the way Halley has Scarlett, or Scarlett has Halley in Sarah Dessen’s Someone Like You. So I spent the 24-hours it took me to down this novel (seriously need to find something to do this summer) being just slightly envious of fictional characters.

By reading this book I can clearly see how much Sarah Dessen has improved as an author after several novels. While Someone Like You is a likable, heart-warming story, it lacks the strong emotions and pitch-perfect writing of Dessen's later books.
One thing I would have loved was if this book was written in the perspective of a different character, namely Cameron or Scarlet. The story seems to revolve around Scarlet as opposed to Halley, so seeing her thoughts at certain points of the...more

I thought this book was okay, but not the best from Sarah Dessen. A bit dry and boring at parts, this is the story of two best friends, Haley and Scarlett, where Halley seems to lean unconditionally on Scarlett. It is not until Scarlett's life becomes a tragedy that Halley begins to learn what it takes to be someone as strong as Scarlett. Covering a romance with classmate, Macon Faulkner, and the struggles with the binds of family as Halley continually changes and evolves while her mother forces...more
My Cover Opinion:
I love this cover (the copy I have, I purchased @Goodwill, so it is a little worn and used), I really like the beachy-kinda feel it has. It does relate to one small part of the book, when Halley sneaks out and Malcolm takes her to this secret place.
My Over All Opinion:
This was actually the first Sarah Dessen book Ive ever read (soon purchasing more), and I loved it. I loved the friendship Hally and Scarlett had; how they were total opposites but yet best friends. The beginning...more

I really liked this book, but it didn't hold my interest. I normally read a book like this in a day, maybe two. it took me about 5 days to read it. It was typical high school, teenagers doing what they do. Kind of reminded me of the movie 'How To Deal'
edit: just found out the book was made into that movie. wow.

Yes, i loved this book!!!! It was very good. And i reccommend it to everyone.
I would recommend this book to any teen age girl. This book is an amazing book, about how strong friendship can go through anything and get stronger. Two best friends that have been friends since they were young, go through an experience that not many people can go through. Scarlett who has always been the strong one is now depending on Halley who has always been the weaker not always not knowing what to do one. For the past month, I have been reading the fictonal novel Someone Like You, by Sarah Dessen. The novel starts as sixteen year old Halley gives us a reflection of her best friend Scarlett. Halley and Scarlett have been best friends since they Scarlett moved into Halley's neighborhood in grade school. The two girls are inseperable, however, they're not alike whatsoever. Halley is quiet and shy, while Scarlett is loud, friendly, and outgoing.
The summer of junior year, Scarlett meets a boy, Michae...more

I loved this book, because it relates to the real world and what is happening here in reality. It's not like a story where it's all based on fiction, it has some real events that can happen to anybody by accident. What I mean is a teen getting pregnant without intentionally doing so.
Scarlett gets pregnant with a baby, and the daddy, Michael Sherwood, gets killed in an accident before he can realize that he and Scarlett made a mistake. A few months later, Scarlett takes a test and finds out that...more

The authors purpose of "Someone Like You" was to entertain. The book was fiction but was about a realist teenage life.
The theme of the book was that friends have to be with each other through the best and the worst times. In the book, Scarlett got pregnant and Halley was with her for everything! Halley was at camp at the beginning of the story and Scarlett called Halley to tell her to come home that she needed her to be with her and Halley came home the next day. scarlett got pregnant and Halle...more

I dont know what to say about this book, other then im disappointed in Sarah Dessen. Her other books that ive read (The Truth About Forever, Lock & Key, Along For The Ride) have been so good, although Lock & Key was a bit slow, and Someone Like You just changed my opinion about Dessen. Its not horrible, its just not... My favourite of hers. At all. Like, not even close.

This was the first book I'd ever listened too. I'd always hated audiobooks, because the only time that I'd listened to them was forcefully in my elementary school library as the librarian sat in the corner eating salad and knitting. But anyways, I decided one day before my run I was going to listen to an audiobook as I ran, so I set it all up at 12.30 and went for my run, listening to my audiobook. I put it down for a few days after that, but I picked it back up as I was working on my math scali...more
Ehhh. I don’t like Halley. She thinks she’s all that, but she’s not. She’s boring, whiny, self-centered, often full of herself, and unreasonably snotty. She is a good friend though. Well, usually.
By plotline: Bad bad boyfriend. Surrounded by cliché, nothing unexpected, Dessen learns how to do this trope much better later.
Family conflict…it’s pretty petty and dumb. It’s like she hates her mother and thinks she’s controlling all of a sudden and so she huffs and yells about it a lot. Dessen learns...more

I recommend for parents of junior high/high school students as well as the kids themselves. The mom, a therapist and specialist in adolescent behavior, is on new territory when her daughter Halley starts to pull away from her and date a "bad boy." Dad hovers in the background, placating with milk shakes and quiet glances, while mom and daughter go head to head.

Halley and Scarlett have been best friends for years, sharing secrets, clothes, and crushes. People know Scarlett as the popular, flamboyant one; Halley’s just her quiet sidekick. Then, at the beginning of their junior year, the balance shifts. First, Scarlett’s boyfriend Michael is killed in a car accident; soon afterward, she learns that she is carrying his baby. For the first time, Scarlett really needs Halley. Their friendship may bend under the weight, but it’ll never break–because a true f...more
I picked up this book thinking it'll be a quick light read, looking at the medium sized paperback but I was severely mistaken.
It's captivating that just pages and ink can transport you to a whole other universe, bringing yourself into the character's shoes. Sarah Dessen has done an, as always, wonderful job on describing Halley's life. I can relate to Halley and imagine vividly about what's going on in her life.

The Book Someone like You by Sarah Dessen is a fantastic read. I enjoyed this book very much. I enjoyed this book because it was a twist and turn teen romance novel that kept you on your toes and guessing what was going to happen next. The main character Halley has been out shined by her best friend Scarlet since they met. Once Scarlet ends up being pregnant from a boy who died in a motor cycle accident before she could tell him, Halley becomes the one who has to take care of her. Halley has to...more
This is a good book for teenage girls--especially ones who've yet to completely lose all since of innocence and common decency. The lead character, Halley, finds out her best (and only) friend, Scarlet, is pregnant for a guy that dies in an accident. However, I think the real story is about true friendship. Halley is always supportive of her friend and never stabs her in the back or gossips about Scarlet like most "mean teens" would do. This book chronicles a true, healthy friendship.

This book was good, but not great. It moved at such a fast pace that I couldn't quite comprehend everything that was happening. That is kind of the way Sarah Dessen writes though. It really was a good book to relate to kids in high school, because a lot happens. It shows that one can get through anything. The book really is good though, and it teaches a lot.

Sarah Dessen is the go-to author for teen girls, especially reluctant readers. Someone Like You is one of her earlier novels and it shows. It is not as strong or interesting as her novels of the last few years. There are rarely any surprise twists in a Dessen novel. Readers know that while the best friendship (always a key element of a Dessen novel) may strain, when it counts, the two friends will be there for each other. And that is exactly what Someone Like You is about. Shy, quiet Halley has...more
In Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen, Halley has been best friends with Scarlett forever. They are really close and do everything together. They live across the street from each other and they both have jobs at Milton’s Market. Scarlett is the popular one while Halley is just her sidekick.
