While waiting in Mali for repairs on the helicopter hired for his photography field work on his book Earth from Above, Arthur-Bertrand found himself in deep conversation with a man from the nearby village. The man bared his soul, telling his hopes and dreams, his fears and disappointments, and sharing the details of his daily life. Back in the air, shooting spectacular photos of the land below, Arthur-Bertrand couldn’t stop wondering about the lives of the people below. This fascinating work is...more

I have always been drawn to people who seem very different from me so this book naturally attracted me when I read the jacket. Each chapter begins with a more in depth interview with an individual followed by brief answers from many other people from around the world answering one question suggested by the longer interview.

I appreciate that the questions are often the big ones we wrestle with, not mere fluff. It's an enlightening experience to read the responses of folks from all around the wor...more

A very special book that perfectly captures the human spirit.

Do you know want to know what people think about their lives, about the state of the world, about others? The interviewers asked some basic, universal questions about life and received phenomenal responses from people of all religions, ages, ethnicities, social statuses, and income levels.

My favorite answers were always those about what peoples childhood dreams were, but I truly enjoyed the messages people gave to those reading. Here...more

I love the photos and stories in this book. It is such a great idea to introduce people to the varieties of humanity in this world, and find common ground with them. I bought this for the kids in my Racial Justice program, and just a warning - some things are not appropriate for primary schoolers, such as discussions about rape and war.

Great nighttime book. So many stories from so many people; it helped me gain perspective every night before bed.

This thought-provoking book touches at the very essence of what it means to be human. Bertrand asked people from every region on earth some of our hardest questions: What is the meaning of life? What does God mean for you? What is your greatest fear? Are you happy? Thousands of answers, from every mindset, education, and nationality, are coupled with a collage of photos of the people who answered. Both the faces and the interviews are intimate and beautiful

This is one of the most incredible books I've ever read. You never really think about how different live is for other people - it might flit in and out of your mind every now and again, but this book forces you to come face to face with humans you'd never otherwise have heard about. Their stories, their ideas, and their lives are incredibly touching.
