I won this book in the Goodreads.com first reads giveaway! The book started out very slow and I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. I'm glad I stuck with it because it did pick up around chapter 2 or 3. This is a religious allegory, but it's also a story of Kings, Princes, Knights, etc. Anyone who enjoys books of that genre would most likely enjoy this book whether they are relious or not.

Exceptional first novel, The Victor is taunt, intense and well paced. The characters are well drawn and even though the language is a bit dense at first (which I think serves to strengthen the medieval setting) I was quickly drawn into the story.

The thing I liked least about The Victor (in a good way) is how insidious Lucius is; how you can see him enacting evil and how oblivious characters let him. It's awful to watch someone's demise, not suddenly but piece by piece in choices they make and li...more

This is a marvelous book! It starts a little slowly, but don't give up at the beginning. The vivid description of the activities and surroundings give you the feeling you are actually experiencing medieval times. The sweet, clean way the romance between two of the main characters is developed and described is excellent, and the way the characters are developed involves you with them emotionally. They are the perfect representation of the relationship between Christ and His church. This is very f...more

Many, many apologies to Marlayne Giron--I should have read and reviewed this weeks ago but have been in a bit of a reading funk lately as life has gotten in the way of my literary pursuits. I am hopeful that reading The Victor has brought me out of that funk--I greatly enjoyed this historical tale of betrayal, victory and romance.

While not without its flaws, The Victor is an enjoyable read that has a happy ending--my favorite kind! The story is simple: a man named Lucius seeks revenge against th...more

First, let me stress again that I am NOT a big fantasy reader, but, I like to give every author a fair chance at their book being praised. And let me say this: The Victor is wonderful! It was a medieval fantansy novel BUT it didn't completely read like a fantasy! Truly different from any fantasy novel I've yet to read. I am so glad that I had the chance to read this for Marlayne!

The medievalness (is that even a word?) of this book with the "knight in shining armor" and names like Thaddeus and S...more

The author of this book, Marlayne Giron (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Marlayn...), is a Messianic Jewish believer. I am always so excited to learn about Jewish people who realize Jesus the Messiah has already come – and will come again!

The idea for ‘The Victor’ came to Marlayne almost thirty years ago when she heard a song by Amy Grant called ‘Fairytale.’ She was particularly inspired by this line in the song:
“Two princes wage the battle for eternity but The Victor has been known from the start...more

“The Victor”, by Marlayne Giron is a perfect example of what a good book is. I will read anything once if the premise sounds good. And so it was I came across Marlayne’s book on another site that was offering an opportunity to receive the book. I read the premise and decided I definitely wanted to read the book. I didn’t win it. However I did check out her website and got in touch with her. I have ordered several of her books and given them to my school and students as part of a reading challeng...more

The Victor, a Christian fantasy similar to King Arthur books, is set in Medieval times, ably written by Marlayne Giron, published by Tate Publishing & Enterprises, LLC in 2009. The ISBN Number is 978-1-60799-184-7.
Ms. Giron got the idea for this book 30 years before its publication upon hearing the song “Fairy Tale,” sung by Amy Grant (written by Amy Grant and Brown Bannister). She wanted to write the story of a knight in shining armor fighting a black knight for the bride, and has successfu...more

The Victor follows the story of Eloth, King of Ellioth, Lucius, and the crown prince, Eloth's son, Joshua. Essentially paralleled with the God-head, the characters can be directly related to God, satan, and Jesus, respectively. Merging a medieval fantasy tale with Biblical allegories and the struggle between good and evil, right and wrong, and the pure and the wicked, The Victor leads you on an exciting journey of life, Judgment, and the human condition.

To be honest, I'd never heard of The Victo...more

Filled with language fit to the time period of the book as well as action a bit of romance and adventure, The Victor by Marlayne Giron is a wonderful story about growing up as well as good versus evil.

Joshua and Llyonesse have known each other since they were small children. Separated by her father's duty to serve the King, Joshua and Llyonesse finish their adolescent years apart.
Ardon and his wife Zarabeth take their daughter Llyonesse to a new land (Shiloh) to establish a new kingdom for the...more

You know what I just don't understand?

How excellent Christian historical fiction like The Victor can exist, as good as it is, and not get more attention? I'm thinking about certain New York Times bestsellers that aren't nearly as good, and the unfairness of it makes me mad.

Historical fiction is my favorite genre, with Christian fiction close behind, so this book was a perfect fit for me. I have to admit that I started it and put it down for about a month (I know, I'm very embarrassed about that,...more

The book takes place in the medieval kingdoms of Ellioth and Shiloh. Ellioth is ruled by a kind and wise king, Eloth. He has a young son, Joshua, who will some day rule in his stead and is betrothed to the beautiful Llyonesse. All is well in the kingdom until the arrival on the scene of the villain, Lucius, who, filled with hatred and jealousy, attempts to overthrow the king. Not content to steal only the throne, Lucius also covets Joshua's intended bride. Thus begins the battle between good and...more

I first heard about this book through a giveaway @ Word Vessel . Although I didn't win the book, the author emailed me and asked me to tell her a little about myself, which I did. From there we became friends and she sent me this book to review.

Since I'm not a fan of medieval fantasy, it took me about 3 chapters to get into in the book, but once I did, I was hooked. This is a story about the battle between good and evil. It's full of action, fighting, adventure, love, hate, betrayal, loyalty and...more

The story takes place in the land of Ellioth, which is a land flavored with the taste of Medieval Times. Everything about Marlayne's writing reflects this--not just the dress and appearance of the characters, not just dialog, not just references to culture and way of life. The sentence structure, the poetic wording, the tone of her writing had me immersed!

There is nothing outlandishly new about the plot--it's classic good vs. evil, classic allegory. The good King Elloth banishes evil Baron Luciu...more

I just finished reading this book for the second time and fell even more in love with these characters. It is beautifully written and held my heart until the last page was turned. I appreciated the Scripture footnotes and seeing the story play out before my eyes of the Father's grace & mercy, the Son's love for His bride, and the victory won. Fantastic book!

Now that was an amazing read. I really hated to put the book down and completed couldn't wait to pick it back up and continue to read this story. It really grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go. Congrads to Marlayne Giron on writing such a wonderful tale of love and betrayal. Look forward to reading he next book - which I am praying there will be another one soon.

The Victor is a fantastically written story about how good triumphs over evil. Filled with conflict, despair and heartache, this novel depicts that love conquers all and to not lose hope.

The medieval world that Giron creates is captivating, and after the first few chapters (see below) I was sucked in. Her descriptions are brilliant; I did not want to put the book down.

The Prologue and 1st chapter are long and a little slow. I almost lost interest. I think the author should have broken up the p...more
