"A Veiled Deception" is a murder mystery with 'shades' of the paranormal by Annette Blair. Fashionistas will enjoy the attention to detail and name-dropping while mystery lovers will like the heroine who always seems to put her best shoe forward.

Madeira is back home. She's returned for a visit, but mostly to design her baby sister's wedding dress. Her visit is apparently none too soon as the groom-to-be's ex has shown up and is trying to hijack the wedding...with the assistance of the groom's mo...more

I'm really giving this a 2.5. I liked it, and I'll be interested to see what Ms. Blair does with the series, but I had a few problems with it. I hate books that are loaded with designer or brand names. I don't know the names, nor wish to, so I know I'm missing whatever points are supposed to be made with their presence. Their presence also dates a book. Ms. Blair employs a fashion/sewing-based vernacular for her protagonist, Madeira, and a little of it is cute and amusing, but it's used too heav...more

Nothing good can come of a wedding with a side of murder. This quirky story of small town gossip, a shocking murder, a touch of magic and the love of vintage clothes is sure to enchant you, as well as give you a new appreciation of those old clothes in your closet.

Madeira Cutler has come home for a few weeks to help her sister get married, leaving behind a job as prestigious New York clothes designer. Arriving in Mystick Falls, Connecticut, Mad becomes embroiled in usual small town and family ho...more

This is a lovely little crafty mystery with a paranormal element. Madeira "Maddie" Cutler designs clothes and sees the dead. But only if she's touching their clothes. When she handles vintage clothing, she sees who wore it before. This causes a problem when she handles the vintage wedding dress her sister is going to wear. She's marrying a young man who is Vancortland IV so the wedding dress has passed down through generations in his family. When Maddie touches it, she sees a young woman wearing...more

I loved this book, which really surprised me because much of it concerns fashion, both current and vintage, which I have no interest in. [Hey, it's not entirely my fault - I grew up in a time and place where 'haute couture' meant your jeans and your sweatshirt were both clean at the same time...] But the author sold it to me and I actually found it very interesting.

The heroine, Madeira [call me Mad] Cutler, head design assistant in a New York fashion house is called home to Mystic Falls. Offici...more

Annette Blair’s A Veiled Deception introduces Madeira Cutler, better known as Maddie, a young woman with a taste for fashion, especially anything vintage. While home in Mystick Falls, Connecticut to help her sister, Sherry, with wedding plans, Maggie realizes that these vintage pieces speak their histories to her. Literally, thanks to her magic touch. Not long after arriving in New England, Maddie finds Sherry’s fiancé’s former girlfriend strangled to death with Sherry’s veil around her neck. De...more

The first in the series of a single, fashionista girl who, at the very least, has psychometric abilities and, at most, a witch that sees ghost, this book is easy and light to read. It starts with Madeira going back home for her youngest sister's wedding (she's the eldest of four) only to find her sister's romantic rival dead during the engagement party. Madeira gets visions from the past from the vintage clothes she touches, which made her think whether those are real or she is, as her best frie...more

Maddie Cutler has always seen the ghosts in her hometown, so she is not surprised to be greeted by them in the windows of her childhood home. She has come home to help her sister, Sherry, plan her wedding and fend off a less than thrilled future mother-in-law's interference. Plans are further complicated by the recent appearance of the groom's old girlfriend who is acting more like a fiance than an old friend. When this old girlfriend turns up murdered, Maddie's psychic powers go into overdrive...more

Why was it in my TBR? I was in the mood for mystery

The blurb:
The right dress can be magic; the wrong one—murder! From the national bestselling author of Sensation's Witch series comes the new Vintage Magic mystery series, featuring Madeira Cutler. I would not recommend this book. I made it to about the half way point and that was by forcing myself to read hoping it would get better, I just could not finish it/enjoy it, the plot line, story, or the chracters. I have found very few books that i just could not finish. The writing wasn't very good. The charcters were really dry and somewhat unbelieveable and i can't even explain why. I know there are those out there that would love this book, but for me this was a total bust. And I will not b...more

Loved Ms. Blairs's writing style! How she weaves vintage clothing, a murder/mystery and ghosts is just wonderful. Ms. Blair's character develop is allows you to get to know the characters and learn to like/love their flaws as well as talents. Can't wait to start the next book. What a cute cozy! I found the writing to be more crisp and sparkling (and witty!) than the usual treacly stuff you tend to get in these "theme" cozies. Enjoyed the quotations at each chapter head and the fact that it was written in a way that left you looking forward to the next book in the series- not for more mystery but to find out how Maddie gets on with her Vintage Magic business. The vintage fashion aspect was just enough- not dripping with dropped names at every turn. The 'magic' aspect...more

As a high fashion designer working under another's label has been making Madeira Cutler dissatisfied for awhile. Madeira's youngest sister, Sherry is getting married and has asked Maddie to return to design her most important dress ever!

As Maddie returns to Mystick Falls, CT., she finds opportunities, romance, and undiscovered talents that tie directly to her deceased mother. Another surprise found is a body and a full-blown murder mystery.

This fascinating book has ghosts, theories, family trad...more

I really liked this book. I picked it up because I thought it was a cozy mystery that took place in a vintage clothing shop. It actually was a little more than that. While I think many of the elements in it make it pretty typical of cozy mysteries, I really liked the magical element. The main character Maddie has the ability to see visions when she touches vintage clothing. It is a vision she receives when she touches a family wedding dress that drives her to solve the mystery of the death that...more

I loved Madeira and her name. I love that clothes "speak" to her and her passion for vintage clothes as well as her other "gift". I also love her unyielding love for her family and her inability to not be heroic. It also helped to have a hot male named Nick Jaconetti to put a little sizzle in the mix. I like the story it was original and interesting. I loved all the different lives being intertwined and how it all got resolved in the end, cuz I'm a sucker for a happy ending.I can't wait to read...more

Maddie Cutler goes home to CT for her sister's impending wedding. But at a party in their family home, a woman is murdered. And her baby sister is the suspect. Then she finds another talent she has besides fashion design - sometimes the vintage clothes talk to her. And visions of the past, along with support of family and friends, she learns the keys to the crime lay in the past. Very fun read, with loads of great fashion quotes and descriptions. Then there are the interesting and fun characters...more

I'm a big fan of Ms. Blair's Accidental and Triplet Witch series ~ so much so, that I pre-ordered the first book in this new series several months ago. My anticipation was not in vain. A Vintage Magic series starts out with a fun, if a little bit darker (a murder to be solved), fast-paced read that is full of ghosts, romance, suspense and humor. I instantly liked the character of Maddie and I'm hoping for more of her in the next installments. As an avid "collector" of vintage items myself, I fou...more

A unique and imaginative story from one of my favorite authors. I was very pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed it since I'm not usually into 'mystery' novels. This book had enough other elements (romance, paranormal, historical fiction, plus literature and fashion references) to keep me fully engrossed until the last page. I finished it in a few hours but still felt satisfied in the end. Started on the second book in the series immediately. I can't believe how many years this sat on my books...more

Maddie (real name Madeira--all her sisters are also named for wine) has been working as a fashion designer in New York, but she comes back home to Mystick Falls to help with her sister Sherry's wedding. She reconnects with her off and on FBI agent boy friend, meets the groom-to-be's wealthy family, and gets in touch with her paranormal powers.
Also contains directions for making a purse! Does this book have everything or what.

Madeira returns to her hometown for her sister's wedding. Her sister's rival is murdered at the engagement party and Madeira (Maddie) finds the body and the motive for the muder as well as the murderer. Along the way we meet her friends and the rest of her family. Turns out Maddie is a witch, the daughter of a witch and is gifted with psychometry working with vintage clothing. She decides to leave her job as a fashion designer and deciding to open her own vintage clothing store in her hometown.

Great start to a new series. I actually read the 5th book in this series first and liked it so much I decided to catch up on the rest of it. I'm tempted to go back and revise my review of the fifth book, because the beginning of this series is a much stronger book than the fifth. Lots of elements make this a fun cozy for me - the relationship between siblings, the possibility of a love triangle, and the paranormal elements that don't overwhelm the story. Highly recommend for fans of cozies.

Good, fun read. Pretty standard cozy mystery fare: amateur investigation into a murder sparked by fear a loved one will be accused. Madeira's psychometry gift added a unique element. I loved the relationship between Maddie and her family, but the fact that she raised Sherry after their mother's death was overstressed. Lots of fashion talk, some interesting, some not. I will be adding books in this series to my TBR, but they probably won't go to the top of the list.

This is my first Annette Blair mystery, although I have read other books and book series' from her and enjoyed them. A Veiled Deception is book one in Blair's Vintage Magic Mystery series and I thought the story was cute. The story centers around Madeira Cutler, a fashion designer in New York by way of Mystick, Connecticut. She returns home to visit family and friends and to take part in the preparations for her younger sister's wedding day. This is precisely the point when drama ensues, as one...more

Its no secret my love for Annette Blair. I wasn't going to read this book. The cover didnt do anything for me, and as we all know, I pick my books by the cover most of the time. But I loved Blair's other books, so I picked it up. I devoured this book in two nights. She did an excellent job as usual with making a connection with you and the characters. I will definitely pick up the next book in this series.

Loved this book! I didn't expect it to be this good, having never read anything else by this author, and this seemed to be a departure for Ms. Blair. What a pleasant surprise! I know very little about designers and designer clothing, but still enjoyed the references sprinkled throughout the book. The paranormal element just made the book for me. I highly recommend it!

A Veiled Deception was really great compared to other fashion fiction books I have read. I plan on reading book #2. I enjoyed the plot and the twist along the way. I can't wait to see where the author takes the main character Madeira in this series! Her sewing and fashion words for cursing were cute! It really does have all three; Vintage, Magic and Mystery!

Fashion designer Madeira Cutler returns home to help with her younger sisters wedding and the engagement party serves up a murder for her to solve. Madeira loves vintage fashion and gets psyhic impressions from the former owners. The authors descriptions of the clothes and buildings in the stories location of Mystick Falls had me wishing this was a picture book.

Annette Blair's romantic comedies owe their beginnings to a root canal and a reluctant trip to Salem Massachusetts. Though she had once proclaimed she'd never write a contemporary, she stumbled into the serendipitous role of Accidental Witch Writer on that trip. Funny how she managed to eat her words even with an aching jaw. Magic or destiny; Annette's Bewitching Romantic Comedies became her first...more
