Poetry Speaks Who I Am is an anthology of poetry meant for middle and high school students. The editor makes the point at the beginning that so many anthologies are meant for children or for adults, and that there are few put together for young adults. The poems in this book are a balance of contemporary poems and classic poems ( Annabel Lee, Poe) that still manage to be relevant today. The topics are ones that middle and high school readers to connect to. The poems range from silly (Death o...more
Poetry Speaks Who I Am is a unique take on helping to introduce readers to modern as well as classical poetry. The novel include works from some of my all-time favorite poets, so it was really nice to be able to sit down with one novel and have them all together. Poetry Speaks Who I Am is a very nice sized book. Not too much, but not too little either. Of course, I am comparing this to my college English anthologies which range in the thousands of pages.

I'm not too big into poetry but with compilations like these, I tend to grab onto them. In this case, the editors did an amazing job of compiling old and new work into a compendium of poignant and touching poetry for teenagers (and really, anyone that's still a teenager on the inside).

In spite of having a poet for a mother (or perhaps because of it) I have never come to terms with poetry. Which is not to say that I didn’t try. As a kid I would pluck up a collection of the stuff and try to read through it. I was handed poems in elementary, middle, and high school with regularity, but I didn’t quite understand why snowy woods were any more important in stanzas than in paragraphs. Poetry seemed like something I should like, but I never found the right way to get a taste for ...more
Poetry Speaks, Who am I is an amazing inspirational anthology of 108 poems designed to appeal to young teens. I listened to the audio NON PRINT CD as well as read the text. This collection consists of classic and contemporary selections including Dream Variations by Langston Hughes, Acquainted With the Night by Robert Frost, In the Fifth Grade Locker Room by Molly Peacock, and The Skokie Theatre by Edward Hirsch.

I loved the CD-component of this book. Now that I've listened to the CD, I have mixed feelings about it. Some of the poets are excellent readers that I can tell my students will like listening to. Others read at a snail's pace or just have very jarring voices. Also, the poets do not follow a uniform pattern. Some introduce themselves; some don't. Some read the title; others skip it. A few of the poets record in venues that are very echo-y. Overall, I feel like the CD could have been much more ef...more

This is a compilation of poems geared toward dealing with the early teen years. The editor explains that this anthology came out of her own personal experiences. She memorized poems in grammar school and then learned to understand and write poetry in high school, but there was no concentration of poems designed for the middle school years. This collection contains classic poets like Poe, Frost, and Dickinson and favorites such as Nikki Giovanni and Maya Angelou. The poems deal with everythin...more
Poetry speaks, but not every poem speaks to me. Still, it's refreshing to find a poem that grips my heart like Stephen Crane's desert creature on page 89.
Here are my Top Ten (okay, 13) favorites from this anthology.
1. The Writer - Richard Wilbur, p. 135-6
2. When You Are Old - W.B. Yeats, p. 129
3. What Are Heavy? Christina Rossetti p.126
4. Houses - Nancy Willard, p. 114

This is a fantastic collection for young teens and tweens. It's a collection of 108 poems that has been carefully selected to mirror the hopes and fears of kids and teens today. It mixes contemporary and classic poets from a range of ethnic backgrounds. All of the poems help kids think about their lives, who they are and who they might be. As Elise Paschen writes in the introduction:

Poetry books have to be read differently than the way other things are read. First, you can't just plunge through the whole thing, going from page to page until it's finished. Rather, poems should be read singly, and slowly. Like sipping fine wine rather than guzzling a water bottle. You have to let a poem sit for a day or so and thing about it and come back to it. Also, some poems are just better read aloud, either by you or someone else. A poem sounds completely different hovering in the air r...more

Poetry anthologies are never totally satisfying. There will always be poems that are lost on the reader. Also, I find that poems almost never convey their entire meaning on the first read, so I have to be dedicated to thoroughly enjoy an anthology like this. As it happens though, I did. I loved the collection. The poems cover a multitude of subjects and range from very accessible to very dense and complex. The authors are equally diverse. This book has something for everyone.

Poetry Speaks Who I Am is a collection of classic and contemporary poetry aimed at addressing middle schoolers in their transition from child to young adult. There is a wide range in the collection: classic poetry like Edgar Allan Poe, Langston Hughes, and Emily Dickinson and newer and present poets, some of whom read their work on the accompanying CD.

First things first, Happy National Poetry Month! I thought I would kick off my own personal celebration of poetry by reviewing Poetry Speaks: Who I Am. I think poetry is such an amazing outlet for healthy expression. I honestly don't know where I would be if I was not a member of poetry club in high school. So, when an anthology aimed at middle grade/high schoolers comes along, then yes, count me among the curious, because, ya'll poetry changes lives.

Poetry collections directed to teens are not very common; you’re much more likely to find collections of poetry for children or adults. This lack of poems for teens to appreciate is exactly what editor Elise Paschen addresses in a new collection that is part of the Poetry Speaks series, Poetry Speaks Who I Am: Stories of Discovery, Inspiration, Independence and Everything Else. The more than 100 poets whose work is represented include classic poets like Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allen Poe and Rober...more

Although marketed for young adults (probably middle-schoolers), this is a great compilation for older readers as well. It combines some classic poets (Shakespeare, Poe, Dickinson) with some modern classic poets (Frost, Angelou), and then adds in some contemporary voices (Alexie, Alexander). Also included is a CD featuring some of the poets reading their works - which is a GREAT idea! Classic themes, with just a touch of adolescent angst and humor.
My freshman year of High school I fell in love with poetry after doing a unit of it in English class. I wrote for years and years after that and even got a few published. But since becoming obsessed with books I haven't done much writing. But when I was offered to review this book, I grabbed at the chance.

I dog-eared my copy from the library and plan to buy this one when my kids get old enough to read it. We read some selections together but many were more appropriate for adolescence and up, as the title suggests. Still, though there is some angst and some first kiss type content, nothing was explicit or too crazy. A great book for mature middle school or high school and up.
Very nice selection, though some seemed random, not having to do much with identity. (there's one about a seal, and one about a seahorse, neither going anywhere but descriptive.). Now I'm listening to the CD, which is a bonus. Sometimes poetry should be heard as well as read.
This book of poetry really focuses on teenagers and has a lot of topics that will appeal to them. Great pieces from classic writers and more contemporary writers too. It even includes a CD of some of the poetry being read and it really gives a voice to the book.
This book was a random, good find at the library! I really enjoyed the majority of these poems....they had a great variety from Keats to modern poets covering all subjects.
just added this book to my classroom listening center, and already it's a hit! looking forward to perusing it in the future!
This collection is ideal for tweens and teens. If you are looking to grab your students with poetry, this is the book. One of the first poems in the book, "Perhaps the World Ends Here", by Joy Harjo gives a unique perspective about what happens at a kitchen table. I'll be designing a lesson around this poem in particular and will be using the cd in April during National Poetry Month.
I loved it!♥ My favorite poet was "Hope Is The Thing With Feathers" By Emily Dickinson!♥
This book is a gem. I think for any Middle School library, it is a must.
I love poems.!
These poems are inspiring and fun to read aloud.
Maybe about half the time I was reading this it would be aloud to myself.
I would recommend this book to those who love poetry and are looking for inspiration.
