Short Review: I really like the full book Sacred Marriage. I have recommended it to a ton of people and given away a number of copies. So I was looking forward to doing the DVD study with my small group. The study went fine, but the DVD and the participant guide suffer from lack of production values. The DVD had points where Gary Thomas was speaking outside by a lake and motor boats goes by and it is hard to hear him. In several other places he was speaking directly into the sun and that made hi...more

I got frustrated with this book early on because of the amount of quotes Mr. Thomas was including. It's one of my pet peeves. I think that's cheating if you're gonna put your name on a book. ;) But I got over it pretty quick, when they lessened as I read on. And now look what I've done ..... rated it a 5, which means I would read this book again. I admit to thinking as I think many do that living a single life as a Christian gives one more opportunities to live for Christ, but Mr. Thomas showed...more

I shared some of my thoughts about this book on my blog:

"Yes, it is difficult to love your spouse. But if you truly want to love God, look right now at the ring on your left hand, commit yourself to exploring anew what that ring represents, and love passionately, crazily, enduringly the fleshy person who put it there. It just may be one of the most spiritual things you can do."

This is a great book, for anyone who is married or engaged. Gary really brings a lot to the table of marriage. Starting out with chapter 1, with a challenge that marriage is "A Call to Holiness More Than Happiness". He continues on through the book hitting topics of how marriage teaches us to love, to respect, to forgive, spiritual disciplines, how to be a servant, and even God-centered sex, along with many other topics.

This participant's guide, along with the video series we watched to go with it (in a small group setting), was amazingly influential in helping my wife and I build a strong godly marriage. This is something every married couple should do together, as well as read the actual book, Sacred Marriage, itself.

I'm not married but I applied these principles in my dating relationship and it transformed how I viewed my thoughts and actions. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to have a biblical marriage that benefits each mate in holiness.

"Marriage can never remove the trials. But even difficult marriages to difficult men can give women the strength to become the people God created them to be" (146).

Our church gave this book to us and I was very surprised. All engaged and married folks should read this. Changed my perspective toward marriage in a big way.

This was such a great book to read before getting married! It helped us view marriage in a totally new way. Definitely recommend this book!
Kristin
A challenging read (for concepts not style), but well worth it. Definitely for Christians...probably not well accepted by non believers.

Easily one of the best books on Christian marriage that I have read (and I've read quite a few). A must read for any stage of marriage...
Amanda
Absolutely challenges you to be a better spouse. Definitely a book full of good practices and heart-wrenching revealings

Pretty awesome take on our skewed ideal of marriage and how God always has more in store for us than we can imagine or realize.

Great help for married couples. Interesting and helpful insights. I believe it will be beneficial even to those who are newly married, or have been married for many years.
Sarah

A lot is packed into this book. It is stuff I even haven't thought about before. Some of it is skim worthy, but mostly read the bullet points. Some chapters are more engrossing than others, depending on your relationship.
I do like the running theme that - Marriage won't fulfill you, but will make you more holy. I really loved reading the history put into his writing. It's very well thought out.

What a good book this is! Honest, creative, transparent. One of the best books on marriage I have ever read. Thomas keeps pulling the reader into living authentically before God and your spouse.

What I like most about this book is how he describes the struggle of holiness in marriage with you spouse as part of God's design for you, in that program of sanctification.

Can't say enough about it. I really like it.
Rick
Good, thought-provoking Christian book. I appreciated how transparent Gary is about his shortcomings and challenges in his marriage. This book had a lot about sex in it--from a Biblical view of course. Just saying. Also seemed geared more towards younger marriages. Recommended for those wanting to improve their marital life no matter how good yours is or isn't. I'd like my wife to read it, too.
Kimberly
It was okay. I wrote a few things down to remember but not the book for me. I wish is was written more plainly as well.
Jennifer Geeslin
I think this book does a great job in establishing biblical perspectives to love and intimacy between married people. It is beautifully written.
Micaela
I really enjoyed this book and know I will read it again and again. It was new to me to consider the spiritual aspect of marriage and to think about how practically bring God into my marriage. Glad I read this before the wedding - hoping to put some of it into practice from the start.
Brad Dunson
The one thing that stuck out to me in this book is that you're to treat all people as the people they will hope to become, not as the people they are. This is especially true for your spouse. Overall, a good read, but not one that I'll recommend everyone to read.
Chad Holtz
One of the best books I have read on marriage. My wife and I read this together as part of our devotional life together and were both challenged and inspired to see our marriage in light of what God wants to do in and through us.
