Ocean’s Child is a soothing flow of rhythmic language for students in grades PS-K. Set in the Artic Ocean at dusk, a mother and baby paddle home along the seacoast observing and saying good night to the different ocean creatures. Each spread of the book features a new animal- otter, walruses, dolphins, polar bear, whale, puffin, sea lion, orca, albatross and seal. The animals are depicted settling down to sleep while the mother and baby duo is at the top of the page looking on from their boat a More...

Ocean's Child is a really nice bedtime book as well as a great introduction to some less obvious ocean animals--great for exposing kids to new animals. The book features the Alaskan Beaufort coast and ends with the signature Northern Lights. Illustrations from the Caldecott-winning David Diaz help with the tone of the book, and the rhythm of Ford & Holland's text rolls gently, perfect for going to bed. Beautiful to look at, nice to read. Best for little ones (toddler-preschool).

A expected mother and child canoe over the ocean in the evening. As they do they witness all sorts of creatures saying goodnight to their babies in different ways. This book is repetitive with words. This book shows comforting acts of mother's to their babies. This book could be used to talk about the nurturing side of animal mothers and how they take care of their babies. This book descibes mother nature and all the acts of different creatures.

It's a gorgeous book -- both the writing and the illustrations. By the final pages, I had tears in my eyes. There's a depth here that few picture books achieve. I bought it for my great-niece, a preschooler, but I think it would be a beautiful gift for any expectant mother, too. "Beneath my heart rests Baby asleep, in a sea of her own quiet dreams ... forever a part of me." Oh, there I go again, with the tears welling up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A really nice choice for a bedtime book. The art is gorgeous and dreamy. The repetition of "To ocean's child we say goodnight. Good night, little __, good night" gives young ones an easy opportunity to chime in on every spread, and the choices of Alaskan animals is cool. On some pages, the lines don't scan exactly to fit the rhythm established in the beginning, but I like that it has a flow without forcing rhymes. Nice.

This is a sweet lullaby story that would be good for a read aloud prior to nap time in a pre k class. It would also be good for studying sea animals and like under the ocean. The repetitive and predictable rhythm of the story would be good for using with young students who are learning to predict stories and putting stories in the proper sequence.

Warm accessible art. On each two page spread there is a two line of verse on the left page, and a two line repeated chorus on the right. This gives a nice rhythm and will make this a good lap book. It might work at story times as well.

THis is the Inuit version of Good Night Moon. With gorgeous illustrations--featuring all of the mammalian life in the sea (and land) that you would see in Alaska. It is beautiful and bright, and a great pre-school aged book.

Beautifully illustrated, lovely Arctic bedtime story. MOther and child say goodnight to the creatures of the northern realms. Has a science side to it, describing the relationship between the parent and sibling of each animal.

We saw the proofs for this at a children's book workshop in March. While some of the "magic" had worn off now that I checked it out from my usual ol' library and didn't have the Editor of Little Golden Books beaming at us while we oohed-and-aaah-ed over the newest literary baby she helped launch into the world, I still enjoyed it. The text is a little TOO repetitive and not magical enough in a few places for me, but the overall effect is quite stunning due in large part to the illust More...
