As someone who struggles with staying balanced and giving to others without losing myself in the process, I found this book to a gem, a unique look on how to stay true, a new twist on concepts already familiar to me. The author claims to be a proponent of "practical spirituality" and while I don't know exactly what that is, her book certainly helped to shake me out of a crisis I was facing by pointing out the power of paradox in everything. By opening up to the simple "what is" of the ...more

First, the edition I read is not listed. This is a paper back, 2009, 228 pgs.
I'm impressed by her knowledge of ancient wisdom--many references to sages through the ages.
Not all the information is new to me, but I liked learning things again.
--Forgive, because the person doesn't deserve the power to live in your head and define you as a victim.
--Forgiving ends our connection with the person. What I do not forgive controls me.
--Hatred never ceases by hatred but by love it is healed.
--Don't all
I think this is a thoughtful, well-researched, fairly well-written book with some solid ideas in it so I gave it three stars. However, I have to admit that I did not finish it. The book seemed more of a 'self-care 101' book that would be useful to those just starting out on that path. For me, however, there was not too much new in it.

While a lot of the ideas in this book seem obvious, Patricia R. Spadaro weaves anecdotes, insight from the "sages", and asks keen questions to guide readers through the process of honoring ourselves. By listening to our inner voices and bodies with intention, she reminds us that we must first take care of ourselves in a world where we often place others before ourselves. This book is about finding the delicate balance between giving and receiving, and it is one that I will definitely go back to ...more

The book's description provided on Goodreads gives the best sense of what this is about: paradox. It is a gentle, easy to read book that provides thought provoking ideas from three spiritual perspectives: Christian, Buddhist, and Jewish. It really does not at all push the religious aspect though. This is one you might want to refer back to now and again.
