This is an excellent, highly-readable biography of Nicholas Focquet, Louis XIV’s short-lived Minister of Finance who was imprisoned by the king for embezzlement and treason. The trial and verdict is still on that is debated by scholars. For a more detailed account of my thoughts on this book, go to my research blog: http://tinyurl.com/lg6hva

11th book of 2010. I had never heard of Nicolas Fouquet until I read this book (shame on me!). Quite a tragic story. If you are interested in the French Monarchy, specifically Louis XIV, this is a must-read.
Reasonable overview of Foucquet's rise and fall. But I came to it straight after loads of Dumas so was wanting more detail. A disapointing lack of maps. Too short, I liked it but wanted more.
