When I first picked up “The Den of Shadows Quartet” I was nothing more than mildly curious. I have never been a big fan of short stories, my feeling is that if you have spent the time to think out the twist and turns of a plot, then be big enough to write and entire book, but pushing all of my preconceived skepticism to the back of my already full brain I decided…What the hell…give it a try…it’s got vampires how bad can it be?

And then I read the first story…

I really enjoyed this book.
I love first person.
The chapters alternating between past and present was fascinating. This was a super quick read, and most definitely enjoyable.

I look forward to future stories about this character, if there are going to be any...

A short review:

The Den of Shadows Quartet offers interesting stories that are skillfully written but with two-dimensional main characters that I found hard to like as their personalities lacked any true (positive) emotion. The books were relatively short with endings that offered little resolve and left a part of the story unsaid.

Now I'll review each book individually as the main characters are different in each book, though thy are set in the same world.

I liked the idea very much - teenage girl annoys the vampires by writing them into her novel, not realising they're real. The trouble is, it wasn't funny as I'd assumed it was going to be. No matter how horrible the vampires are, the heroine thinks of them as her friends. She tells off the vampire hunter for killing her friends, who are, let's face it, serial killers. My students love it and who am I to argue with them, but I couldn't finish this set of novellas, I'm afraid. Maybe I should have...more

I would give this book a 2.5 if I could. It was one book with four separate novellas. The first two stories were not good. They were poorly written and developed. I would give them 2 stars. The last two novellas were better, but not great. They showed a lot of promise and had intriguing characters, but the story was not developed and didn't go anywhere. The author would flirt with romantic interests, but never delivered. She never showed a resolution for any of her characters, just raised questi...more

Okay I have to admit I read this book in 2 days. I liked all of these books very much; they had a nice quality to them that really made me ride the high once I opened the first page. I especially loved the poem at the beginning of every book. I also liked that it reflected what the book would somewhat be about and then at the end going back and reading the poems it all made a great impact on the book.
I devoured all the books with great fervor; and with that said I loved all of them some more tha...more

I'm rating this book on the the story I gave the most stars to.

•In the Forest of the Night (2 stars)
I felt the dialogue was repetitive and it kind of annoyed me. Risika was an awesome character and her life story drew me in. The switch between her part life and current vampire life showed how much she grew as a person and being of the night. The plot twist for a short story made the ending bittersweet.

The Den of Shadows Quartet

“The night is full of mystery. Even when the moon is brightest, secrets hide everywhere. Then the sun rises and its rays cast so many shadows that the day creates more illusion than all the veiled truth of the night,” Jessica – Demon in my View

With the enigmatic picture the above words paint how can anyone not get sucked into the tumescent world of Demon in my View? Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, author of The Den of Shadows Quartet and many of my other favorite books has been...more

Going to use this space to review each story as I go.

This is starting to remind me so much of the Night World series by L.J. Smith.

In the Forests of the Night: 3 Stars
Alternates between present and past events. Risika was very enjoyable to read from and a pretty good version of vampire lore. I loved reading about her past and really felt her pain and anger. Had a bittersweet ending which I felt was the perfect way for it to end. I also enjoyed reading every fighting scene she had.

This was a really interesting series. It was mostly about the vampire hunters falling in love with the vampires or vampires falling in love with the hunter.

In the Forests of the Night-
It was not the best one out of the four. It was kinda dull and I felt like it was going over the same information over and over again. I found the characters interesting because the author tried to make Risika weak and Aybrey the strongest living vampire. But Risika was scared most of the time throughout the story...more

This is a new author to me and I have to say... I was dissapointed and don't really like her writing style. In the first book she is just flinging out vampire terminology like we are all professors of it. That made it fairly confusing to start with. Plus the information itself was fairly useless too. None of the books ended well enough for me either. The last book in the series was the best and could've been great but of course it fell flat at the end too. I'd have to be heavily convinced her ot...more

This series, frankly, was incredible. I started reading and was totally grabbed by the first story. The second one continued with some great characters from the first. The third brought in mostly new characters (that I still loved). And the fourth was totally entertaining.

I didn't know if I was going to like the stories so much, since they didn't follow one main character like most other series do. But I think this worked out really well, considering the fact that each book seemed to bring back...more

Just started Midnight Predator and already don't want to continue :(. I loved In The Forests Of The Night! It was extremely well written. Demon in my view threw me for a loop, I loved it just the same. Shattered Mirror is a stand alone and doesn't link enough to the previous two, but it was still awesome. But this last one seems not related to any of the others and I'm not a fan. I'm on page 10/Chapter 2 and I'm not interested. :( Oh well I have all the next books in the series on hold at my lib...more

Four short stories, all really interesting and fast reads. The first three were easy to connect to one another, the next book would mention a character or two from the previous one or the main character for the next book would be a quick mention in the previous one, but I'm still trying to figure out how the last book connects other than the quick mention of New Mayhem. Highly likely I'll be reading another one of her books, The Shapeshifters: The Kiesha'ra of the Den of Shadows, sometime soon.

If you love vampire novels (and even if you don't) then you NEED to read these books.
It so hard to believe that Amelia Atwater-Rhodes wrote these when she was a teenager. The writing is rich and mature. The stories unique and enthralling. And the characters are strong.
In order from most loved to least loved (but still loved) here is how I enjoyed these books:
Midnight Predator
Demon In My View
In the Forest of the Night
Shattered Mirror

All of the stories together, as a whole, were well played out. I wouldn't have minded if they were continued a little longer. Actually, I think that is the fault in this book. I simply didn't get enough. Some of the stories felt unfinished. I needed them to be wrapped up a little better. (view spoiler)[Like for Turquoise, I want to know what happened with her and Jaguar! I'm glad she got her revenge, but I would love to know what became of her. Also, what the hell kind of name is Turquoise? Wher...more

I picked up this edition as I’m missing two of the books in this series. And wow, did it bring me back. I originally read the series back when I was thirteen, so picking it up again after some time was refreshing.

In the Forests of the Night- While the writing is really stilted in this, it works well with Risika’s narration and you get the sense that you are reading the memories and current events of a three hundred year old vampire. The plot moves a little too quickly for such a short book, but...more

One of my favorite things in the world is finding books at garage sales or used book stores, and The Den of Shadows Quartet was on of those. It was highly recommended by the sweet lady who owned a book store near my home~ :)

Unfortunately, its been a little while since I've read it (a couple of months?), and to be honest, I don't really remember much about every story. And if I have to think long and hard about what each story was about or the characters, it must not have left a good impression.

Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was thirteen (I think) when she published Into The Forests of the Night and I personally believe she read too much Night World then tried to pull off some of the stories, just not as well as the fabulous L. J. Smith.

I'm going to go backwards here and start with Midnight Predator. Midnight Predator was an okay copy of Black Dawn. Let's compare:

This book is called 'The Den Of Shadows Quartet'
I decided to read this book, because somebody in my form class
recommended it to me.

This fits into my Bingo board under the category:'A book with a female main character'.

It is a great book on the life of vampires, and Amelia is the best writer of the Genre that i have ever read.

This book features four different stories, but some of these characters are also featured within these other stories.
The first of this collection is called: In the Forest of...more

Cover: I absolutely love this cover! It's so beautiful. It looks even better in real life. Ah, love it.
StoryLine: The Den of Shadows is a collection of four novels, all based in the same world, but with different stories. The first three involve reoccurring characters, but the forth has all new characters.
The first is the only one told in first person, the rest are all third person. The first book is about Risika, a powerful vampire, taking control of her life.
The second is about Jessica, a girl...more

In the Forests of the Night
In the Forests of the Night is the first actual vampire book I've read - sparkling 'vegetarian' vampires so don't count - so I wasn't entirely sure how I would take to it.

When I started reading this, I found it very interesting to realize Amelia was only 13 when she wrote In the Forests of the Night.

I liked Risika as a character. The inner battle going on within herself between who she was before and who she...more

Definitely could have earned another star, in my eyes, if it had a little more consistency and joined the characters together better in each book. I lost track of characters and lives. I understand they are all entwined but more follow through is needed.

Each book contained a new set of characters and a well imagined plot. The fist novel veered off from my expectations. It was written in first person and when I had adjusted to the writer's style she changed it up. I was drawn into the second thir...more

This is a interesting book. It is a collection of 4 smaller stories that are all linked together one way or another. All four are mostly involving Vampires, witches and hunters as the main characters. It was not my favorite book and I found the first two stories poorly written and a little more childish. overall the book is geared to a younger reader in there teens. I cannot see myself reading the book a second time but I would definatly recommend it to someone interested in vampires.

I liked all four stories in this book. The novellas were a bit too short, but easy and enjoyable to read. I liked the way how In the Forests of the Night and Demon in my View were related and was a bit disappointed the other stories didn't connect on the same level. I would say The Den of Shadows Quartet is a fun book to read, not the greatest book ever, but not bad at all :)
Sandy
all four booksar pretty good. the characters are really unique and the way she connects each story with the other is really intriguing but the only thing bad ill say, is that the ending wasnt good enough for me. i wanted more, more elaboration into what happened next and especially with the characters that showed romantic interests in each other. i wanted there to be more romance and a better ending but overall it was a thrilling book that i enjoyed thoroughly. The 3rd book would have to be my f...more

I read these books a few years ago, and they were an instant favorite. I though the story was great, a girl writing her own stories about a vampire who ended up being real. He gets pissed that she somehow knows so many intimate stories of his and goes after her. The thing that caught my attention the most was the AUTHOR though. Amelia Atwater-Rhodes was in her early teenage years when she wrote these books, and it astounds me that someone so young can have such an intense imagination. I know tha...more

So it took me a while to finish the book due to the fact I wanted to savour the good literature in the book. I really enjoyed this book even though Im not into the whole immortal creatures but it was good nonetheless. I have to admit the worst, boring short story was 'The forests of the night' it was awfully dragging so I ended up reading that short story for last. Overall the three other stories were great and different. Some had a few twist but some were predictable. What I didn't enjoy was th...more

I grew up in Concord, Massachusetts, where I matriculated through the public Concord-Carlisle school district from kindergarten until my graduation in 2001. The best part of school, from fifth grade until the year I graduated, was definitely chorus.
