Despite the current downtrend in travel guides and independent bookstores the Lonely Planet has just opened its first shop in the UK, at Manchester airport (http://www.thebookseller.com/news/lon...). This book is an old account of the founding of the company, but that doesn’t make it less relevant to the current situation.

The authors Tony and Maureen Wheeler founded Lonely Planet and in this book they tell both a personal and a business story. The majority of the narrative (and you sense probabl

This the story of a couple who made a living from travelling. They really lived it. And it'll make you really jealous, heheh. It chronicles their beginning (Chance encounter at a park in the U.K., then marriage), their early adventure from Europe, across Asia to Australia, their setting up a travel publishing company, the challenges they faced with work, each other, and with raising children... Everything. And it's got lots of memorable pictures of their travels.

I had no idea Lonely Planet was s

The book I brought with me to Thailand (author autographed, from Wide World Books in Wallingford).

I had hoped the author(s) would have spent more pages on the original overland trip across Europe and Asia in the early 70s than on the nuts and bolts of the publishing empire that resulted from the trip (although with my own publishing background, that part was not without interest to me). Some good bits of writing here and there from both Tony and Maureen. (See quotes.)

Brilliant Book. It traces the the travels that ignited the global brand of Lonely Planet. It all started with SE Asia, and this was their first guide book "the yellow bible". We go on travels with these two, as well as settle in Australia as the overcome obstacles to launch their hand printed guide books in Australia. I loved this book and would read it again.

Actually written by Tony and Maureen Wheeler, this is the story about the founding and operating stories of travel publisher Lonely Planet. Thoroughly interesting, this books functions as almost a de-facto autobiography, a book of travel stories and a fascinating insight into a publishing company.

If there was one word to describe this book, I would use 'rambling'. Although the content is interesting, the book lacks structure and that makes it a little confusing/frustrating to read. I was glad to reach the end of this book and am not sure if I would recommend it to others.

who says that one must choose between family, hobbies and career? Tony and Maureen have shown it all through their, as seen in the book, wit and courage to hold fast their marriage, their passions to travel round the world and their prospective business along with their family and friends.

I loved this book. It was an interesting insight into how the Lonely Planet business started and the journey to wealth and success. The book took the reader on the adventure of both travel and the ups and downs of the business.

Fairly run of the mill stuff. First we went here, then we started a business, then we went here, wrote a book about it, then we went here etc.

No great shakes
