Wicked Prey
Wicked Prey (Lucas Davenport #19)
"The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stickup men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car...more

I've been enjoying the Prey series for about six or seven years now. Always fun for light reading. Lucas Davenport is sort of like Encyclopedia Brown---he never gets skunked.
I think my favorites in the series are the ones with Clara Rinker, girl assassin, but all of them are good.
This one has some laugh-out-loud guy banter, but Rosie Cruz gets the best line of all:
"Ahhh, God. Men and their penises. If they didn't have them, we'd have to sew one o...more

Lucas Davenport, the Minnesota state cop featured in 19 John Sandford novels, has his hands full this time. The Republican National Covention in is in Minneapolis to nominate John McCain for the presidency so the police are stretched thin. Lucas is dealing with reports of a right wing radical test-firing a sniper rifle in the area, a professional robbery crew with a history of killing cops has come to town to steal the illicit slush funds that come with political events, an old crippled enemy h...more

Another satisfying outing from John Sandford. The series has gone on for quite a long time, lost its edge as part of the psycho thriller chiller genre, but still an enjoyable read. John Sandford has quite the character in Lucas Davenport, but I do miss some of the old associates or past partners in crime, namely the nun. Anyway, th...more
The latest (19th?) Lucas Davenport novel is complicated. It starts off messy. It ends messy. And you're never quite sure that you believe what happened. But, as always, the indomitable Davenport holds it together.
This book intertwines four story lines: A paraplegic pimp Randy out for revenge on Davenport, decides to plot the kidnapping of his ward Letty. In thread 2, Letty, about to be adopted as a daughter by the Davenports, figures out the plot after a clumsy "introducti...more

I read all of John Sandford's work.
In this 21st "Prey" book, Lucas Davenport meets his match in a 14 year old girl: Letty West proves too tough for our intrepid hero, especially when she gets "crazier than a barrel of hair".
There is so much going on in this book...so many unrelated stories that actually do connect before the finale. It is very interesting to see how this is done.

One of the Best Lucas Davenport Books So Far
In his nineteenth edition to the Lucas Davenport Prey series, John Sandford proves beyond a reasonable doubt that somethings will never grow old or tired. The hero, Lucas Davenport, is up to his neck in problems in WICKED PREY. WICKED PREY has three different crimes running at the same time that seem to weave in and out of each other, all the while the Republican Nomination Convention sets the stage for limited resources and manpower in the...more

Lucas Davenport is back in a case that has then running around the twin cities. The Republican convention is in town and the grey area money men are as well. Carrying huge amounts of cash to pass under the table in the political process they are ideal prey of a group of bad guys who have elaborate plans to acquire it and the bagmen can’t complain to the cops without being suspect themselves. The bad guys lead Lucas on a merry chase and they are not above killing when they feel like it. It’s ...more
I rarely enjoy a character so much that I stick with them through 19 books. Wicked Prey is the 19th book in Sandford's Prey series and it's just as good as the first. I don't know what it is about Lucas Davenport that is just so intriguing but as long as the stories are good and Lucas is in them, I'm a fan. If we include Kidd and that fuckin' Flowers, Sandford creates characters that you have to follow.

Picked this up after I saw the TV movie for Certain Prey and all of the copies the library had of that title were checked out. The first quarter of the book was promising, although I thought the author did a bit of over-describing and there seemed to be a few too many plot threads.
A couple of things finally made me put it down. The plot involving his adopted daughter did not ring true. I 'get' the proposition that she's this mighty and independent young woman. But she's supposed to ...more

Chief among them is a crew of professional stickup men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system. All that's headache enough for Lucas Davenport - but what's about to hit him i...more
I’ve been a fan of John Sandford’s Prey series for many years, and I wasn’t disappointed in this, his 19th installment. For those unfamiliar, the Prey series (Each title being some sort of prey; Chosen Prey, Rules of Prey, etc…) are centered upon Lucas Davenport, formerly of Minneapolis PD and now heading up the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). He’s a tough, smart, and financially independent cop who doesn’t mind both getting his hands dirty, and occasionally doing dirty deeds to...more
John Sandford has written an outstanding novel, again. This book has multiple layers and story lines that I found compelling. I really couldn't put it down.
Sandford, living in Saint Paul, was able to accurately capture the pulse of our city during the Republican National Convention and weave an action-packed Lucas Davenport story into it. As a St. Paul resident who lives a few miles from "Lucas' home on Mississippi Boulevard," I relish the intimate references to our city....more

The second Prey book in a row that was underwhelming for me. Heard Sandford interviewed on the radio the other day and it sounded like the Prey series was soon to be retired. Maybe another two books. Probably a good choice, and maybe a little too late. At least it seems like his Flower's series is pretty good.
This book basically had two coinciding plot lines that intersected at strange and unbelievable spots. One plot line revolved around a gang of violent robbers who were in to...more

This was the first book I read on my Kindle. Sandford writes nice pot-boilers in the tradition shared with his contemporary, Michael Connelly. I like them equally well and never miss a new issue of either. This latest of the Prey series brings Lucas Davenport back front and center. Only this time, Sandford departs from his usual formula to introduce his spunky adoptive daughter to the action. At 14 she is already solving mysteries and working cases. I thought the little scene when Lucas fin...more
Although not the best of Sandford's "Prey" series, it was still great to be back in Minnesota with Lucas Davenport. This time the BCA agent must stop a band of thieves who have target the money greasing wheels at the Republican National Convention. Not only does Lucas face these murderous hoods, but he is also on the lookout for an extremist who may be setting his rifle's scope on one of the GOP leaders. Meanwhile, there is a subplot involving Lucas's adopted ward Letty. I was quit...more
Lucas Davenport is just a stud. He's rich, good looking, smart and doesn't put up with a lot of crap. Wicked Prey was interesting because of the multiple protaganists. Seeing the dynamic between Davenport and the cops and then the dynamic between the criminals was really enlightening. It seemed to give depth to the story. The story was very believable. With events set in a very recent place in history. I think that enhanced the beliveability of the story. At first I thought there might be too ma...more
Another enemy from the past has surfaced to menace Lucas Davenport and his family. Randy Whitcomb, a wheelbound pimp, blames Lucas for all his misfortunes and decides to get even by targeting Letty West (about to become a legal Davenport), Lucas' young ward. But Letty West is no ordinary 14-year old girl: she was an orphan, daughter of an addict mother. When her mother died, she was cared for by a trapper who taught her how to trap wild animals and nothing else, until she was rescued by Lucas. L...more
Once again John Sandford leaves me wanting more. I really enjoy the fact that at the end he was kind of leaving the story open for another possible series. This one featuring the protagonist of the Prey series adopted daughter Letty. Now Letty may be adopted but she is truly Davenports daughter. If he should happen to decide to finally write a series with a female lead character I am so there.

After John Sandford released Phantom Prey he quickly set off to work on his nineteenth “Prey” novel. The new addition to his long-running list of “Prey” novels is Wicked Prey. Once again, Minnesota detective and memorable protagonist, Lucas Davenport, is the star of the show. Sandford also brings a new line of side characters, and also reunites readers with noteworthy old ones. Wicked Prey manages to be new and exiting, but also captures the classic detective feeling that Sandford was striving f...more
Wicked Prey is the 19th in a series all with the word "Prey" in the title and centering around protagonist Lucas Davenport who is a former Minneapolis detective now working criminal cases for the govenor and often involve serial killers. The books take place in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and should be read in order as the storylines include Davenport's family and fellow cops. Some of the more notable criminals make repeat appearances. Wicked Prey centers around a vicious robbery ...more
Lucas Davenport is another familiar character, but I was reminded it has been quite some time since I read John Sandford....I had forgotten about his soon to be adopted (in this book) daughter. Letty ends up being a major player in this one, doing her own sleuthing and trying to protect Lucas from finding out about RAndy Whitcomb's plan to get at Lucas thru Letty. I also have to wonder if this is setting the stage for Letty to become more and more a main character in the book series....altho...more
This is a review of this series overall. I am a BIG fan of John Sandford's detective series starring Lucas Davenport, St. Paul, MN detective. Somewhat violent, but with intensely engaging characters, dialogue, and pacing of action, this series is a nostalgic trip fr me since the setting reminds me of the 5 years I spent in the Twin Cities. I used to live close to the Cathedral in St. Paul and the main character lives close to the river in between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Each book serves to pee...more

Another great offering by John Sandford. The murder gang is an amazing and villainous adversary worthy of Lucas Davenport - the interaction between the gang and Lucas Davenport make the book -- the understory involving Letty is on the lame side. I like Letty - but this really did not add to the overall story, and comes across more as page padding to make the book thicker than any substantive enhancement of the overall story. With the murder gang here created by Sandford, he really did not nee...more
Lucas Davenport has to deal with craziness. The Republican National Convention is in town. One of the candidates may be targeted for a sniper attack. There is a murder gang robbing conventioneers. And, he doesn't realize, his ward, Letty, is the target of a psycho trying to get even with Davenport. Will Davenport be able to neutralize the sniper threat? Will he find the very prepared murder gang? Letty may or may not let Lucas know that she has become a target or she may continue with her ...more
Wow - this is a good Prey book, the best in some time. The characters, including a couple of the villans, were interesting and the plot was excellent. I enjoyed the way Sandford included the Republican Convention and its impact on the Twin Cities without polticizing the book. I love Lettie and assume we will see more of her. Only one small complaint - it gets tiresome that male authors have their villians shoot male characters but rape and torture female ones. No matter how male writers try ...more
Latest book in the Lucas Davenport series. It was great having Lucas back as the main character and there were actually three different, yet connected, stories going on at once. It keeps you guessing as to which event is going to be the "big deal of the book". I also enjoyed reading about Letty and I would not mind reading a few stories with her as the lead once she's grown up a bit. All in all this was typical John Sandford fare w/ one of the greatest "cop" characters ou...more
Lucas Davenport keeps on doing what he does best in this book--wrestling with a whole lot of information that might or might not be related to the crime he's working on; bumping up to something that just doesn't fit; wrestling with it and not making it fit; and finally, maybe in the middle of the night, having it all fit together. As this happens, the characters are real and sometimes quirky, and the conversations and banter are enjoyable. Sandford's writing style is crisp, with expressions ("...more
