First of all, a caveat: Amazon tricks you by making the first four books of the series available on the Kindle while the next few are unavailable. I'm not sure if I'll order the paper books or just wait.
Anyway, the Montalbano books keep getting better. This is the best so far. It picks up on plot threads from The Snack Thief and continues by introducing new characters and upping the stakes for Montalbano. Highly recommended.

Voice of the Violin is a character driven police procedural, not that there is anything wrong with its plot. Inspector Montalbano is as crafty a cop as you could hope to meet, but he also has a well rounded personal life, especially when it comes to enjoying fine Sicilian cooking. His investigative team is likable and entertaining, with quirks of their own. And those who populate this particular case, the murder of a stunning young woman, are equally engaging.

The more of the Montalbano series that I read, the more I enjoy them. Montalbano is subject to blinding moments of revelation--this one comes while hearing a violin. Once again, while the stories are fun and the mystery good, it would be helping to have a stronger understanding of Italian history, and Sicily in particular, to really appreciate some of the inside jokes presented in the stories.

I liked this mystery, but I wish I read the book as opposed to listening to the audio tape. The characters seem to have been "Americanized" in the audiobook, with one having an almost stereotypical NY Italian accent. This seemed a bit jarring considering the mystery takes place in Sicily. That aside, I enjoyed the mystery. It was light and comedic at times, but also had some twists and turns. Inspector Montalbano kind of reminds me of an Italian Morse.

love these books, wish there were more. listened to audio - the voice of the reader makes it so enjoyable - i dont know if the humor would have been so recognizable - if the book is as funny - the translation must have been exquisite.

On one delicious roll with Montalbano as my guide. Seems I always dig out an Andrea Camilleri mystery or two whenever the weather warms up.

Inspector Montalbano does it again. Great detective work while enjoying a glimpse of life as a native Italian.

I don't know that I'd say this is my favourite Camilleri book. I enjoyed it a lot, and the plot was very interesting, however I noticed some subtle differences in the translating style which felt jarring at times.
I love the character of Montalbano, although in this book he was a lot more cantankerous and volatile than he has been in any other book, or even in the movies. He's often downright rude to his officers, and more abusive than necessary I think.

This is the fourth book in the Inspector Montalbano series. This a great series based in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigata. It's translated from Italian and each book has an explanation of Sicilian phrases, grammar, and references to Italian politics. Inspector Montalbano is investigating the murder of a beautiful woman while finding himself in trouble with his superiors.

Salvo Montalbano #4.
A delightful procedural, complete with internal politics between local police and state police, crime families and less than perfectly honest judges and district attorneys, all of them of course outflanked by wiley Inspettore Montalbano.
And a generous portion of sarcastic social criticism.
Oh yes, food too, I gained 5 pounds just reading this.

I was somewhat disappointed with this one. I kinda expect more from Camilleri and although it's a pretty good, point A to point B plot, with political intrigue, I didn't like the characters, I found the plot weak and uninteresting. Even Salvo Montalbano was too grumpy and sad and depressed for my taste.

4th in a series of Inspector Montalbano mysteries (first one I've read). Montalbano is down-to-earth with a healthy disrespect for authority. Set in Sicily. Bonus food porn. Grover Gardner does a good job of narrating. I will probably pick up the other books in this series at some point.

I read all of the Montalbano books. I think this might be his forth case? They are just excellent vacation reads. Easy and entertaining but not completely fluff. Better than Donna Leon.
And I like all the descriptions of the Sicilian dishes that make it into the stories...

Another great Inspector Montalbano book. The supporting characters are, well, CHARACTERS. Not only did I add a few recipes to my list, I also added a South American author to my To Read list.

I picked this up after seeing it recommended for the food-obsessed detective, but I found it a little disjointed and not particularly compelling. I probably won't look for others in the series.
