А. ...more

THE VOYAGE OF THE FRIGATE PALADA. (1858; this ed. 1965). Ivan Goncharov. ****.
This edition was published by The Folio Society, translated and edited by N. W. Wilson, and includes photographs and woodblock prints from the period. Goncharov (1812-1891) is best known for his novel, “Oblomov,” a classic of Russian literature. I can also recommend the film made from the novel by – I think – Tarkovsky (check IMDB). “Oblomov” was published a year after this account of his trip on the frigate Palada as

Not my favorite book by Goncharov. I guess nowadays we have quite different expectations from a book of this kind. We know more and expect more, so Goncharov's adventure tends to be perceived as a curiosity from the XIX century full of rather odd details rather than a full fledged tour report.

A good old leisurely travel book that takes great Russian writer Goncharov (his novel "Oblomov" is canonic) to the Pacific and back in the 1850s.
