Another excellent volume in the Reaktion series. Every meat-eating society has figured out how to stuff leftovers into intestines and make sausages, but only America has created the culture of the Hot Dog--the association with baseball, the ethnic and regulatory politics of hot dog carts, marketing by brand names and the fear of contamination, Little People and the weinermobile, Eastern European and Mediterranean influence on condiments, regional variations, franchising, street food and jingles.
Interesting look into the history of the hot dog, both as a food item and as a cultural symbol. My favorite parts were the hot dogs in different parts of the world and the recipes at the end. The description of how hot dogs are made were kind of gross though; I guess that's what you get when you read a book about hot dogs.
