A cornerstone book in the history of film canon formation, first published in 1930 then expanded into a more popular edition in 1949. It's fashionable now to bash Rotha's Euro/US/documentary-centric leanings in his choices, but this book remains a fascinating and useful reference, especially for its lists of films.

Addendum: I just bought the 1967 final edition of this classic and it looks wonderful. I prefer the cover of the 1949 edition (shown here) though.
