Lois Barker is not Father Tim, but if you felt at home in Jan Karon’s Mitford, you will love the lively characters in Judy Christie’s Gone to Green. When big city journalist Lois Barker inherits a small town newspaper from a friend, she only intends to stay the required year in Green, Louisiana, before unloading the paper and moving on to something better. But is there anything better than being her own boss and making a difference in a local community? Of course, readers know from the beginning...more
GONE TO GREEN is the first of five books by the author regarding the small town of Green, Louisiana. In this first installation, Lois Barber, a news editor in the bustling town of Dayton, Ohio, is offered the chance to be the owner of the Green News-Item, a small newspaper in Green, LA. Only one catch: she has to stay for at least one year. Lois' adventures (told mostly by her and in the third person) as she adjusts to the climate, the people, and the nuances of Southern living make for an inter...more

Where do I start? I was sick yestereday when I picked up this book and spent the day reading on the couch. It was a great little Christan fiction story with a hlot of factsion thrown in about an actual newspaper experience. The plot was done well, there was a lot of humor, the book kept me more interested than tv the entire day and I wanted to finish it to see where and how the author finished the entire story off. I wish I had the next book in the series, I believe she has one out or coming out...more
I downloaded this for free as a Kindle freebie. I wasn't expecting much. I will say the story, the town and the protagonist were interesting enough for me to finish the book.
However, two things tickled my brain: 1) this is the first in a series!! I had no idea from the description or even the sense of the book until the last chapter. 2) this is Christian "Chick Lit" - which I don't have a problem with per se, but again unexpected.
Over all: the idea of a medium sized town newsreporter moving to...more

A delightful read! It takes place in a fictional small town located in North Louisiana. Lois suddenly inherits a small town newspaper there and has to run it for 1 year according to the will. Quite a culture shock for a 30 something city editor working in Dayton, Ohio. The author, Judy Christie, captures small town life with out making everyone out to look like a bunch of hicks. So Lois has to pack up and move to Green, LA and run The Green News-Item for one year, make it profitable and then sh...more
Reading this book I feel like a learned how a newspaper business operates. Living in a small town myself I could so relate to the Community. As this summer here was in the 100s, I could relate to the heat of Louisiana.
Lois Barker takes over a newspaper willed to her by her friend who worked with her in big city. He bought the paper and then got Leukemia. So he willed it to her and she had to operate it for a year.

“Gone to Green” is Judy Christie’s debut novel and book one of "The Green Series." The book centers around Lois Barker who is on the management staff of a big city newspaper. Nice. That is what this book is. A nice young woman moves to a generally nice small town populated with mostly nice people and helps sift out the few bad apples without much trouble. Nice. God is thrown in as the One who gives us wisdom and makes everything work out in the end. Very trite. I don't mean this to sound snarky. I actually liked reading this. It is escapist, and non-reality. But it kept me going and I think I will read the other ones that I got for free on my Kindle. If you need some...more
Another freebie from Barnes & Noble for my Nook.
Gone to Green is the first volume in the Gone to Green series. The story is pleasantly entertaining but really nothing original. Lois, the main character, hails from a big city newspaper and inherits a small town biweekly newspaper from a close friend. She must stay in Green, LA for a year to turn the failing paper around. While there, she makes new friends, - mostly because she effortlessly seems to solve every problem that comes her way - an...more

I'll have to say I enjoyed this free book I picked up for my kindle! Light, fun read about female journalist Lois who unexpectedly inherits a small town newspaper from a colleague. She leaves Ohio for rural North Louisiana and the town of Green where the paper comes out twice a week. She struggles a bit to find her way in a new place and get to know the people all while confronting problems in the small town. Toward the end of her year there she prepares to sell the paper as prearranged while re...more
Another free download for my Kindle app. And my 3rd foray into the Christian fiction genre this year. It was kind of a fun story, about a year in a woman's life spent in a new (small) town, with a new job, meeting new people.
Parts of it felt very fast-paced, almost emotionally unattached. Like the author needed to get the whole year's worth of storyline in, without going over her targeted word count.

I stumbled upon this series by reading the third book first. I enjoyed the small town setting and the colorful characters that I just had to go back and catch up. This first book in the series introduces Lois, the reluctant new owner of a small newspaper in Green, Louisiana. As she does her best to run the paper for the required one year, she is keeping her eye on the time when she can sell the paper and move on to a bigger and better position in a "real" town. Of course, the people in Green mak...more

Lois on her first day at The Green Item News immediately ticks some people in the small community of Green off and pleases others with...more
Gone to Green by Judy Christie is the first book in the Green series, which looks to be a load of fun! Lois Barker is stunned to find her life turned upside down after the death of a good friend and co-worker who left her a small newspaper in Green, Louisiana, along with a stipulation that she keep it for at least a year. Lois leaves her feature editor position in Dayton, Ohio for smalltown Cajun country that is still fighting prejudice as well as inertia. The paper had been run by a team of goo...more
I had not expected to be quite so taken with this Nook freebie. "Green" in the context of this book is the name of a small town in Louisiana. A newspaper reporter from Dayton inherits a small newspaper in a small town that she must run for a year in order to qualify to keep her inheritance. Planning to stay the year and then sell, she moves to the small town and finds an entirely new way of life. The novel straddles the definitions of a finding-yourself novel and a romance. I really think that I...more
Other reviewers compared this book to Jan Karon's Mitford. I respectfully disagree. Although Green, Louisiana is a quirky little town, I never really connected with any of the characters in this book the way I did to Mitford. In this book, big-city reporter inherits the Green News Item, a small town paper, promising to stick with it for a year before she moves on to bigger and better things. The town takes her in with open arms and wins her over. Unfortunately they could not win me over at the s...more
This book was a great light read for the summer. I found myself caring about the characters. Thankfully, this is only book one of five.
What surprises me is that some reviewers are calling this a Christian book. I noticed very few references to religion. I have been turned off by heavy handed Christian fiction because I am not a religious person, but this just seemed like many people who have a sprinkling of religion in their lives. Lori Barker, a survivor from corporate-owned newspapers, finds herself inheriting a small-town Louisiana newspaper. She gives herself a year to run it and get it in shape to sell. She finds herself enjoying the challenge and the people. Her indecision regarding what to do with the paper and how to deal with local politicians and prejudices has her turning to God. Her renewed faith and her renewed enjoyment with her life helps her decide that she is right where she should be. Good first novel by...more
Honestly, I did not like this book! I can't believe so many people have rated this 4 or 5 stars! Just because its a Christian book doesn't mean it's a very good one. It could not hold my attention at all! As you may see, it took me almost a month to read it when on average, I finish a book within a couple days. I felt that there were A TON of missing details! To this moment, I still have no idea as to what ANY of the characters look like! SO FRUSTRATING! I really don't see how people were so mov...more
This was another cheap book that I didn't really research before shelling out the ninety nine cents. It was perfectly fine, it was just another Christian-based theme that came out of nowhere! (I mean, if you intentionally seek out christian fiction, that is one thing. But the constant praying to God, asking God for all the answers, having him speak to you ... it's just not what I am looking for. So I read it, because it did have a plot line outside of the God line, but I wouldn't read any more.)...more
This is a somewhat predictable story of a city newspaper women who inadvertantly becomes the owner of a small town newspaper (publshed 2 times a week) in rural Lousiana. She becomes deeply involved in the community, begins a spiritual journey and establishes wonderful friendships. When it is time to sell, she can not move on and decides to stay. I enjoyed this story although I did find it a bit predictable and contrived. However, I think I may read the sequel, so it was certainly entertaining!
Although I think the writer has talent, she had way too many anticlimactic points in the story. I was amazed at how there were several chances to build tension and convey serious emotion but instead she would wrap up in 2 to 3 lines. There was a point when a dangerous man was coming toward her in a parking lot when suddenly someone came out of a store across the street. The next line had the police there. Very disappointed and would not recommend. Guess you get what you pay for - it was free.
I loved this first book in Judy Christie's Green Series! Perhaps it is because Lois Barker's crusading spirit is so much like mine. (I could use her in my neighborhood advocacy work!) Lois' story is so much like my own...someone from the outside moves in, starts stirring things up, and makes positive changes. While other people might think this wrong-righting thing just doesn't happen like this, well - sometimes it does. I liked meeting the people of Green, understanding their problems and liked...more
I got this as a free book for my Kindle and figured for the price I couldn't go wrong. It took me awhile to read the whole book. It was kinda slow at points, but was well written. It is a book about a woman who inherits a newspaper in a small Louisiana town and she has to live there for one year and run the paper before she can sell it. She spends the whole year helping the town grow and can't wait till her year is up. Along the way she makes many new friends.
Really enjoyed the story, but the point of view (first person looking back at what had already happened) was a little annoying. Not sure why. The rest of the series is written first person as it's happening, and it flows much better.
At first, I wasn't sure I was going to like the series, now I can't wait to read the next one. Great character development, and characters you can really like, or enjoy not liking, as the case may be.

A freebie I got for my Kindle. I had no idea it was the first in a series, but I see now that another one is out or coming out soon, to continue the story. Still, a very light, easy stand-alone read. It's Christian fiction, probably chick-lit, so right up my alley :) The premise is a newspaperwoman from Dayton Ohio inherits a small newspaper in small town North Louisiana. Since my sister is in the newspaper biz, this one appealed to me really well!
