★★★½☆ (This is a review of the audiobook.) When the opportunity to do this one as a “buddy read” came up, I thought I’d give it another shot. Especially since I was in a better frame of mind than last time. I also want to pick this series back up and thought I’d “refresh” my memory. So I did a “re-read via audio.” Hillary Huber does alright on this one, but nothing spectacular. She has a wonderful voice, an excellent tone, and does a nice job on the international accents; however, at times she...more
I really enjoyed this book. Yes, it’s a blatant rip off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and while reading it I felt like I was cheating on my beloved Brothers, but I had been warned about that beforehand and because I was prepared for it, it probably didn’t bother me as much as it would of if I was going in blind. Plus I’m such a massive fan of the BDB that I’m guaranteed to love anything that even slightly resembles it! Although I did roll my eyes in disgust when the heroine referred to the he...more
Good book and very imaginative storyline. Adrian really developed a unique concept of vampirism and vampire society. Although the warriors remind me of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, they are not carbon copies, and the Midnight Breed series is claiming its own place in the paranormal romance genre. I love warriors, and these guys are definitely creme de la creme. One thing that bothered me was the casual indifference about humans being killed by the Rogues. The Breed warriors did protect humans,...more

This is the first book in Lara Adrian's Black Dagger Bro- oops, I mean Midnight Breed series.
The series is about a group of huge, badass (but good) vampires who live together in a compound and fight evil vampires in order to protect their really old fashioned, hoity toity race. They wear leather and carry really hard core weapons, and go on patrol every night to kill the enemy. When they find their mate, they share blood to stay alive. I don't know how I got that mixed up with JR Ward's series....more

Opening Line:"Her baby wouldn't stop crying."
So this was a reread for me, if I was reading it now for the first time I would give it four stars however I remember being blown away the first time I read it, (until Ward rocked my world that is) so I'll leave it at 5
Still a good paranormal but I had a tough time differentiating between this and the BDB, the similarities are just too glaring. Its very strange to me that Kiss Of Midnight and Dark Lover both came out around the same time and are so,...more

A poorly executed BDB.
I had my eyes on this for a long time and I said “Heh! Why not try it now? Seems like it’s pretty popular so it might be good.” So I gave it a try aaaand it wasn’t what I expected it to be…
The intro was pretty good; I thought Lucan was a really nice character. He was acting all ninja assassin, slicing through bad guys and being all mysterious and stuff. I like these things so it got my hopes up. And then the story began. *yawns*

I first found & fell in love with this series last year when I was given the first 2 books. Before I'd even finished the first book I had already ordered the rest of the series! Since Amazon have now confirmed that the latest release - Shades Of Midnight - is now on it's way to me I thought now would be an ideal time to re-read & review the series ready for when it arrives. It feels like I've been waiting forever for Shades to come out so I can't wait for it to get here.

Uh, am I reading Ward's Blackdagger Brotherhood with a slightly different backstory and characters?
Both have the following elements:
Vampire Warriors
In a secret society
battling an ancient evil
let's not forget hard headed male protags who just can't get over themselves long enough to fall in love--but of course, you know they do because it is PNR!

At the risk of been torn to shreds by the BDB fan's, I much preferred this book.
I will definitely be continuing on with this series.
There are definite similarities between this & BDB without a doubt. (she even called her man her "dark lover" at one stage!)
But if like me you hated the silly names, despised the Lessers and thought the slang & carry on of the brothers was a bit cringey then this is the series for you.

I decided to give kiss of midnight a chance after reading a few reviews that compared it to JR Wards "Black Dagger Brotherhood series". So in the beginning this book was already doomed, since i am admittedly an avid reader of The BDB Series. Even if that wasn't a factor in my decision, i still would of found this book to drag on more than it should have. Don't get me wrong, I'll still move on to the next book in the series but unfortunately it will not be a priority. Let me just say..... This se...more
My Thoughts:
This novel was remarkably unremarkable. Don't get me wrong, it didn't suck but I'm not exactly about to clean out the Lara Adrian section at the local bookstore. The set up is pretty generic, like Adrian got tips from "Vampire Romance 101". You've got the big baddies (Rogues) & the group of men fighting to annihilate the big baddies. There personalities are even generic(at least on the surface). There's the leader, the badass, the geek, the smartass, & the suicidal loner. The...more

Not Bad but a little more weirder to me than usual. It does sound alot like JR Ward's BDB but a little different. But the only thing that really freaked me out was that according to this book Vampire's on Earth are actually decended from aliens. Okay made me thinkof the old TV series "Twilight Zone". Not a bad read I will continue with the series to find out what all happens

I'll admit that I was more than a little skeptical about reading Kiss of Midnight. After having just finished Dark Lover by J.R. Ward and not liking it, I was wary of the hype surrounding this novel as well. In addition, the more I read of it, the more similar it seemed to be to Dark Lover. She quickly realizes she's not into the dark Goth scene at the downtown club they've ventured into and promptly makes her goodbyes. Things turn ugly however when she unwittingly falls upon a bizarre murder and barely escapes with her life. I finished Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian. I didn't really like it. I'd read two people who said they liked it better than the BDB, and I've heard these books compared to the BDB. That's silly, because there is no comparison, and I don't think it's fair to this series to do so.
The first half of the book was too gory for me. I didn't like their callous disregard of humans. I have no trouble reading the fantasy world of the BDB because it's it doesn't bother me at all to read about them killing l...more

I enjoyed this paranormal romance centered in Boston, Massachusetts. Yes, there are some similarities in J.R. Ward's Black Dagger series and, I thought, in Christine Feehan's Carpathian series as well (going Rogue). But, I found enough differences that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The main characters progressed well in their bid for character evolvement and I thought the author wrote a good, entertaining story. It captured and held my attention. There is betrayal, death, suspense, action, fun...more

Everytime I read a new vampire series I learn something new about the characteristics of vampires and where they come from. I liked Lara Adrian's take on the vampires coming from another planet making them Alien Vampires that crashed upon earth and intertwined with society through out time for thousands of years.
As always the vampires are the most evocative, enticing, and erotic creatures I have ever read about. It was a good read and
I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I am aware that this is a highly praised book here on GR, and most of my friends loved it. Yet, I don't feel the hype.
A couple of years ago, I joined the paranormal romance bandwagon. I added many books of the genre to my TBR and claimed it was my absolute favourite genre.
However, as I stand before you now, I have to admit that I got tired of PNR. It's just so repetitive, the structure and the plot are always the same, with a few slight variations.

My what a difference a few years can make......
In all fairness I'll admit that part of the reason for the new lower rating is my fault. I've either started to re-read or skimmed parts of this book on several occasions in anticipation of catching up on the series but never got any further. So reading it again was a little tedious. With that said I really liked the introduction to the Breed. Lara Adrian builds an int...more

I really enjoyed this book, which was a nice surprise. I had heard if I like J.R.Ward, (whom I adore) I'll like theses books.

I'm writing this review after reading the second book in the series and I read it before the BDB series. I like the Black Dagger Brotherhood more (a lot more).
What I liked:
* Him. Lucan. He looked more like an anti-hero than a hero for most of the time, but I liked him nonetheless and I totally fell for him when we caught a glimpse of him in a 500-year-old tapestry or painting or whatever in all his fierce glory (I am totally fascinated by Italian condottieri like Giovanni de' Medici and I could...more

I read this as I have seen Lara Adrians book in all the bookshops and heard that it had a similar vibe as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. However although I wasn't exactly disappointed I didn't think it was anywhere as good as say "Dark Lover" by J R Ward.

The story in itself is pretty good. Lara Adrian gives the story a nice twist by portraying the vampires as aliens who crash-landed on earth a long time ago.

As a child, Lara Adrian used to sleep with the covers up around her neck, afraid she might become the midnight prey of deadly vampires.
