The Holy Terror
4.25 stars

This story takes place in San Diego, which made me really happy. I've only lived in California a year but I already love finding movies or books that are set near my home.

Lily is a fantastic, strong, Chinese-American police detective with a gift for sensing magic. Lily kind of reminded me of old Anita Blake with a bit of Mercy Thompson's weaknesses and Kate Daniels's practicality sprinkled in. If that makes any sense to anyone.

Rule is a very sexy (yet stereotypical) werewolf - protect...more

Oh, man, where have you been all my life Eileen Wilks? I have been looking for another series like yours.

If anyone is familiar with the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, this resonated very strongly for me with what I liked most about her earlier books. The investigations and the interesting facts about the cops and, especially, the details about the world now that supernaturals are legal.

In this book the Lupi, or werewolves, are known about in the world. They've finally go...more

I loved this book. Layered, complex, smart, and well written. Read the complete review at: http://loveaffairwithanereader.blogsp...

Things I like about the Story

* The main character is an Asian American female, detective on the San Diego Police Department. I'm Asian American, female, from San Diego with lots of friends on the police department. I found Lily easy to relate to.

* The story makes me think about places where it is difficult to imagine. As the lupi are being revealed and equality is b...more

Tempting Danger was really 4 1/2 stars for me. I found the premise and the world building good but, as is the case with many first books in a series, the book was a bit uneven until the last 1/3. It really came together in that last 1/3 though! I enjoyed Grandmother Li Lei Yu very much. I will definitely read the next in the series as I can see it really growing on me after getting the world/culture building done in the first book. A romantic suspense set in an interesting werewolf/"others" worl...more

I know it's mean, but this book was a L.K. Hamilton wannabee. I guess there are a lot of those these days. The heroine is a detective with psychic abilities. Her love interest is a good looking werewolf who is also the main murder suspect in the case she's pursuing. The writing was just okay; these books, amongst other things, are supposed to be funny, and Wilkes...isn't. Also, the similarities between tough, independent Lily Yu and LKH's Anita Blake got on my nerves. It's not a bad read for a r...more

I've had this book on my shelves for several months, but haven't gotten around to reading it. I was pleasantly surprised I did last night. I did feel like I was missing a few things at the beginning of the book (apparently there is a novella in "On the Prowl" but I don't remember the characters). Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Tempting Danger was an interesting and yet confusing read. The story was slow through out the book which wasn't a bad thing. It allowed me to fully understand the details Ms. Wilks story. I did enjoy Lily and Rule they were very fleshed out and easy to relate to on some levels. The confusing parts for me mainly had to do with the Wolves culture. I kept feeling like I was missing something or couldn't grasp what was being put out . I almost put this book down once and the was after a scene with D...more

I'm conflicted about rating this one.

-The beginning of this book: 1.5 stars.
You were thrown into the deep. very little explaining about ... well just about everything. There were a lot of terms that weren't explained and a lot of characters who weren't introduced so I didn't know who they were( and sometimes what) :')
It was difficult to sort out.

-The middle part : 4.5 stars.
Luckily everything became clear ( though after a while). The MC was a likeable character.
The romance was good. [spoiler] T...more

Alright UF authors, listen up! You really, really need to stop using the whole "mystical connection" thing to avoid having to create a realistic, believable relationship. I'm not adverse to the existence of said connection, but at least provide some believable context, as well as reactions from the characters. I don't care how mystical the connection might be, I find it hard to believe that everyone involved would give in and accept their new reality without any major issues. For examples of mys...more

Lily Rule is a San Diego police detective assigned to investigate a murder that might just be the work of a werewolf. Werewolves, more accurately known collectively as the Lupi are slowly establishing themselves in society, becoming accepted legally and popularly as citizens (at least in human form) instead of mere beasts. This makes the case a sensitive one and there are more senior detectives than Lily who might have been given the job. However, Lily is a 'sensitive' which means she can sense...more

The book was a lot better than I expected by cover and title. I was ready for very romantic book with werewolves and UF background. I was glad to found out that relationship development is not one and only thread, not even major, however it takes big and important part of story.
The book has a good plot, solid world, passable characters, and humorous moments. The story kept going, was easy to read and I never felt bored. So, normaly I would say what a great book. But you know how it is...more

Eileen Wilks starts the book out with incredibly stereotypical characters - the tough minority female cop and the playboy powerful werewolf - and gives them depth, motivation, and real character. The plot is nothing new to the werewolf portfolio, and is full of the usual politics and black magic. What sets this story apart are the details that Wilks builds into each twist. For example, it isn't enough that particular men are bespelled; Wilks explains both the symptoms of that enchantment and, ev...more

This book was a big fat surprise for me. The writing is rather lovely and I absolutely adored the lupi, especially Benedict and Cullen (woo Benedict, I'd love to be your Chosen any day).

I love Eileen Wilks' voice. Her attention and care with her characters really shines.

The world building was pretty awesome, unique in a way I didn't expect from a book about, essentially, werewolves (but the politically correct term is lupus).

My only issue was Lily. I love that she's a strong female character, I...more

4/5 (B)

Tempting Danger pretty much sets the series. It introduces most of the characters, Lily, Rule, Cullen - Rule's friend and a clanless werewolf who's also a sorcerer although sorcery is illegal, as well as Lily and Rule's family along with some other secondary characters. Through the entire book, Ms. Wilks slowly builds her world, develops her characters while telling a story.

Story - A human is killed by a werewolf and Lily is primary investigator of the case. Everything points at Rule, but...more

It's a fun, fast paced story and I really enjoyed the twists.
One thing I really, really appreciated is the diversity of the cast and the way Wilks wrote fully fledged characters and avoided stereotypes. It's a fun book but it's also a smart one. It tackled deep issues without being didactic. I never felt lectured. It was a page turner.

Lily Yu is amazing. Her and Rule Turner are a perfect couple. They are mated/bonded but there's a twist. It's not instalove and the romance is all the better for...more

Lily is a detective. She is calm, logical and rational. Rule is a lupi (werewolf)! He is calm, logical and rational. Someone is killing people in order to implicate the lupi! Lily and Rule track down the baddies in a calm logical manner. Lily and Rule are fated mates! They have ambiguous feelings about this, but approach the problem in a calm, rational and logical manner. They catch the baddies by working together and by the end of the book have fallen deeply in like with each other. Finis.

Homicide detective and touch sensitive Lily Yu knows she's stepped into a potential firestorm when she's made lead detective on the murder investigation of a human killed by a Lupi. Species relations are slowly starting to improve, but tensions between humans and other magical creatures are still high and there is a long history of persecution and death. This murder has the potential to set progress back to the burning times. If it's not solved quickly, it will...more

This is the second book in the series but the first full length novel following the short story in the anthology Lover Beware, published in 2003.

Lily has a very rough past, and because of that she developed a very tough persona for herself. She is strong and very stubborn and keeps everyone at a distance. This of course makes for some major friction when the Lupi prince, Rule, is relentless in his pursuit of her. What confounds Lily is that despite her wanting nothing to do with him, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him. It becomes a battle of wills between them, with neither side really having any chance at winning.

Rule Turner is the prince of the werewolf Molokai clan, and he's a suspect in a grisly murder. Lily Yu is the investigator on that murder case, and she soon learns that there is more going on than meets the eye. Rule discovers that Lily is his Chosen mate, but she doesn't know if she can trust him. However, since they can't be more than a few hundred feet away from each other without feeling dizzy, they must learn to work together to solve the mystery.

Better then I figured it would be. I liked Lily Yu, it was nice to have a female lead that wasn't the typical caucasian female that seems to be the general route authors go. When Rule was first metioned I was thinking this guy is sleazy, but the more you get to know him the more you warm up to him as a character. Finding out about his son really added a softer side to Rule that was charming. I couldn't stop reading from start to finish, looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Finding a new Urban Fantasy series to love is like getting a present when its not your birthday. This one was neat because it had a Chinese American for a heroine who also happened to be a homicide detective while the hero is the enigmatic heir to one of the lupi (werewolf) clans. They come together to solve a murder, but there is so much more going on that made it exciting to the end.

Lily Lu is a fairly new detective and must still prove herself. Its hard because not only is she a woman; she is...more

I've had this book in my tbr forever and kept shuffling it back. Now that I've finally read it, I wished I'd read it ages ago. I really enjoyed this book. It has a strong h in Lily, a beginning to a strong romance with Rule; and a story that was for the most part, quite engaging.

I really liked the premise of the book. Lily is a homicide cop at the beginning of the book, but eventually goes to work for the FBI's "Magical Crimes Unit". I'm sure the next few books will delve into this line of work...more

For me, it is uncommon to love an urban series from the very beginning. Usually, I suffer from "confusion" because some authors choose to leave some useful information to understand the world built in the story.

Sometimes, if the urban fantasy is pretty familiar, I have no problem. Unfortunately, this book is not. Sure, werewolves (or in this case lupi) are very common feature. But the custom and tradition of the lupi pack in this book are difficult to understand. Not to mention some uncommon te...more

Eileen Wilks first novel of "The World Of The Lupi" series is awesome. It derived from a novella (Only Human) she wrote earlier, but except for the beginning the story develops much different and is more elaborate. It does however not lose any of its initial appeal.

The female character, Lily Yu, is a police detective in the homicide devision. When a murder occurs that looks like a werewolf killing she has to follow the evidence to a club frequented by werewolf clientel. There she meets Rule Turn...more

This was my first book by Eileen Wilks. I've seen her name around but had not gotten around to reading anything of hers. I must say, that I truly enjoyed her world of the Lupi. She weaves a vivid world of werewolves who value women (even though the men are not necessarily monogamous). Lily Yu is a homicide detective in San Diego, CA. She is a sensitive (she can touch an object and feel whether magic is involved); however, she does not let anyone at the police department know of her skills becaus...more

Inhalt:

Finally! Someone wrote a shifter book right!
Most of my werewolf genre petpeeves were avoided in this work-a feat that definatetly did not go unappreciated. The characters were realistic and the story had a certain feel of grittiness that made reading it enjoyable. The personalities rebuked the fluff and glamour that usually permeates through tales of this genre. Every individual had a reason for being the way they were rather than blaming every feeling and idea on 'instinct'. Wilks took appropri...more
