Itazura Na Kiss 1 (Itazura na Kiss #1)
by
Kaoru Tada,
多田かおる
High school senior Kotoko Aihara has had a crush on Naoki Irie since his freshman year. Unfortunately, a few things are discouraging her from him: he's a member of "Class A," the top ranking class in school, whereas she's in "Class F"; he gets the top score on every exam; and he's so smart, popular, and handsome that he's been class president every year...more

How do I break in the new year? By curling up in my bed and reading a ginormously sized volume of shoujo manga. Good start, I hope this sets the tone for the rest of my year.
So review!
This is one of those shoujo where an academically inept girl sets her sight on the most ~wonderful man in the world~. In this case class F Kotoko falls in love with A student and master athlete Naoki. This is how I feel about Naoki:

Kotoko of Class F has a secret: she's head over heels in love with Naoki of Class A! When she finally summons up the courage to give him a love letter, Naoki doesn't even read it. In fact, he even goes out of his way to tell Kotoko he doesn't like stupid girls. Ouch! It seems like Kotoko's heart has been broken and there's no hope in her and Naoki ever coming together - that is, until a natural disaster of fateful proportions intervenes. When Kotoko's family house is turned into rubble by an ear...more
BLISS. I can't believe they FINALLY have put English translations of this manga into print...available at my lovely local book store! At present, one of my all time fave series. Funny, sweet, lovely. I can read this over and over again and never tire of it. Kotoko is an adorable idiot who always sacrifices her dignity on the alter of unrequited love. And the smart, talented, socially inept Naoki is the focus of her pining. Throughout the series, readers witness Naoki coming alive through his in...more
my impossibly high expectations did not disappoint, which is fairly astonishing given i've seen two versions of this already (and the kdrama to come! hurrah!). goes to show what a strong, character-based story it is. but what makes the manga in particular is Tada's art. i was not expecting it to be so delicately skewed and subtly (and ubsubtly too, sometimes) comic as well as just plain well-drawn - unlike some other beloved 90s shojo *cough HYD cough*. justifiably and dservedly a classic.

Not my kind of shojo. Kotoko is stupid & inept; her love interest Naoki treats her terribly, and due to his physical & mental superiority, he never gets the set-downs he deserves. He's so unpleasant that it's hard to root for them as a couple: surely Kotoko deserves a better guy than this perfect-on-paper snob?
I could accept a love interest as rude as Naoki if the heroine reformed him with a roundhouse kick to the face, or at least multiple tongue lashings. But Kotoko brings neither t...more

This book is so adorable! Poor little Kotoko, she's one of the stupidest girls at school, yet she falls in love with the smartest high schooler at her school, even in the nation! She really is stupid, but that's what makes it cute! Definitely reccommend it to any and all shojo fans.
I actually passed over this book a couple times at the bookstore because I wasn't sure about the art, but changed my mind later and picked up and am so, so glad I did! It was very cute, and really funny! I'm really looking forward to the next part!!!
I thought Naoki was a total prick, so I am bummed that Kotoko was sweating him so hard. Have some dignity girl!
Seems like a romance shouldn't have the main characters hating each other..
I really liked this story. It made me smile. Yes somethings in it seem unreal but I liked the parents of characters that are in this book.

I loved the animation and when I heard the author had died before she finished it it made me sad. The theme song always gets stuck in my head!! Hoping the books are as good!
So I have to admit that the style and clothing of the drawings turned me off of reading this at first, but the humorous dialogue and plot quickly won me over. It reminded me a little of Naruto in that the main character isn't very good at what she wants to be good at (academics in this case instead of ninjitsu), but tries her darnedest to improve, which eventually, if begrudgingly, wins the respect of her peers. I can't wait to read what happens in the next volume!

Tada made her debut in 1977, when still a high school student, on Shueisha's "Deluxe Margaret" magazine. Tada's stories belong to the shōjo genre of manga and feature love stories centred around young female characters and their love interests. The storylines include comedic moments and are characterised by essential and sharp drawings. Some of Tada's most popular works are Ai Shite Knig...more
