The vamps have been out for years, and now the weres and shifters have decided to follow the lead of the undead and reveal their existence to the ordinary world. Sookie Stackhouse already knows about them, of course - her brother turns into a panther at the full moon, she's friend to the local were pack, and Sam, her boss at Merlotte's bar, is a shapeshifter.

When I was eleven or twelve I read about fifty of the Sweet Valley High books. Fifty. I'm sure. I bought them all with the money I earned from my paper route and I could afford one or two books per week (this was a supplement to what I took from the school and public libraries you understand). If there wasn't a new SVH book out, I'd find something else similar with teen models or girls who formed rock bands or in a rather excellent example of the need for better supervision of children in bookst...more

It’s not the worst book ever written as some reviewers say, but it’s not that good either. Charlaine Harris failed to deliver what we all wanted to read about and over-delivered on what we didn’t really care for.

What I mean is most of us keep reading this series primarily to find out who Sookie finally settles with. No matter what team you were on – Eric, Bill, Quinn, Sam – you expected some kind of resolution, at least temporary, to her love life. We got none of it. There was so little develop...more

I just finished Dead and Gone and I must say that I loved it. I agree with previous reviews that it was much darker than previous Sookie's but I see that as a good thing. Life is changing Sookie and she is shedding some of her idealism, which is something all of us must face to some degree or another to find our own truths.

This books has many painful losses, but it also has a significant amount of growth on the parts of many of our main characters. I too am anxious for the next book if for no ot...more

The scattered book 8 set up for this one nicely & much was resolved. This book was more on track, as usual & about the same caliber. It should be read in order. It's a soap opera, so you need the background to appreciate how our heroine works through her various difficulties. All in all, more fun reading candy.

28May11 - re-read the HB which I now own. Teresa loaned me the new book #11 & I've 're-read' the series up to this point in audiobook format, downloaded from the local library...more

The Publisher Says: Except for Sookie Stackhouse, folks in Bon Temps, Louisiana, know little about vamps-and nothing about weres.

Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to reveal their existence to the ordinary world. At first all goes well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found near the bar where Sookie works-and she feels compelled to discover who, human or otherwise, did it.

But there's a far greater danger threatening Bon Temps. A race of unhum...more

will start off by saying I love this series. I started it long before the TRUE BLOOD HBO series came out so I have been faithful from the beginning, and have always waited anxiously for the newest book in the series. I also reread the series each time a new book comes out to keep refreshing. Most were great book. A few of her more recent ones left me a little hungry for more as they didn?t really hit the spot but they were OK. I was excited for this book hoping Miss Harris would really expand u...more

Overall these books were decent. The first couple made me think I wasn't going to be able to read this series but things picked up for me around book 3. I thought 3-5 were the best. I have gotten a bit attached to some of the characters but it took a while. Pam is probably my favorite- everytime she's in a scene I end up laughing. I like some of the jams Sookie gets herself into and the mystery part of the books. What I don't care for is the attempt at romance in these books. That's when I start...more

Dead and Gone compares to Dead Until Dark like heavy-load work days compare to Sundays in the Caribbean: it is a dark, sorrow-haunted novel. That would have been maybe all right if it wasn't for a major editing mistake that I can't ignore. The whole premise of the novel is that a rebel fraction of the fairies tries to murder Sookie, after Niall's visits made them aware of her existence. Niall himself says so in at least a couple of instances. But at the end of the book, while Sookie is tortured,...more

Harris has moved from writing about the 'girl next door who happens to be a bit unusual and gets herself into bother with vampires and werewolves' to apocalyptic storylines - unfortunately she's just better at the girl next door thing. SPOILERS: We've had a major explosion, were war, vampire war and now a fairy war (which only features a couple of fairies) from which Sookie barely emerges. Niall decides that dealing with humans is too much bother and seals the 'fairy gate'- probably leaving Derm...more

I was so exited to read this book and I wasn't disappointed. However it doesn't get the 5 stars because some things happened that I didn't enjoy reading about.

***Little spoiler*****

Also I think that there might be a regression on Sookie and Bill's relationship.

This is probably my least favorite of the Sookie novels, but that is not to say that I didn't enjoy it. Harris is back with her witty dialogue and elaborate cast of characters, but as the story arcs away from the vampires, it loses something.

The last 50 or so pages move so quickly and there are too many references left open for the future. I like that the previous Sookie books could stand alone. This one gave me the sensation that Harris is just priming us for the next book, which was a bit dis...more

They've been talking about it for a while, but now the weres of the world are revealing themselves. And they're getting mixed reaction. Most of the folks at Merlottes are accepting (except Arlene and her friends from the Fellowship of the Sun.) But Sam's step-father freaked out when his mom revealed herself and he shot her, which means Sam has to leave town to deal with family business.

Sookie is taking care of the bar, when (view spoiler)[Crystal (hide spoiler)] turns up dead. That sparks the bi...more

The best thing about this book was that Eric was in it. Other than that, I felt it should have stayed at the editor's a bit longer. I usually don't go in to these books with very high expectations, but even so I found the plot far too meandering, with too much focus on minor characters that needn't have been a part of the storyline at all.

The shifters "coming out" was a huge thing! And yet, how many chapters actually dealt with the repercussions of such an event? Most of what we, the readers, go...more

Dead and Gone by Charlaine Harris (pp. 320)

Charlaine Harris’s ninth Sookie Stackhouse novel is more of what fans expect minus some face time from fan favorite Bill. Again the books tend to take on the feel of a prime time TV series. There first part of the book wraps up more loose ends and story lines from previous books. There’s more of Jason being a murder suspect, again. And the shape shifters follow the vampire example and come out into the mainstream. And we get more fantasy world building...more

I don't request many books for review specifically, but I never miss an opportunity to read Charlaine Harris. Ever. I'm not sure what it is that draws me to her fiction, but if I had to guess I'd say it's the "voice" of her characters: Sookie Stackhouse in particular.

I know I'm not the only person who has found Harris' brand of fiction to be particularly appealing. Last year HBO created a series based on Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries called True Blood, and if any of you have seen it, you've...more

***Spoilers***

Well, I am thrilled that Eric and Sookie's relationship is back, sorta. But nothing is really ever how it appears in this series, and none of their time together seemed 100% normal to me, like there was something important we still need to know. The more blood they exchanged the more I worried that Eric will end up dying at some point. I hope not :( Although he is controlling to a degree that would piss me off royally in the real world...it fits his personality and job description...more

(Sookie Stackhouse,#9) Awesome book! This time around Sookie finds herself in the middle of a fairy war, shifters make their mark on society, and good & bad characters die. I loved the uncomplicated setting, the familiar characters, and all the action. I feel like Sookie’s bond with Eric needs some backbone, some more clarification or something… And don’t get me started on Bill! Time to MOVE ON Sookie! Also, I sensed something between Sam & Sookie, maybe?
The Library Lady
More brain candy from Harris. The TV series is a lot (sorry) meatier, but this will help to pass the time until the new season in June.

A VERY enjoyable outing for Sookie and the gang, and a definite step up from the 'transitional' From Dead to Worse.

The sexual and romantic tension between Eric and Sookie is still the hallmark of the series for me, and this was a good one for them. Their relationship takes some dramatic steps forward... and by the way: Team Eric!

The pacing was dramatic, the misleads mostly well done, and the ending was about as climactic as it gets. Loved it. The story and characters have gotten much darker, bu...more

These books are like some sort of highly addictive drug. None of the books in the series are as good as the first one, they get increasingly worse in both plot and writing; I felt kind of bad reading them even as I compulsively devoured one after another at the expense of everything else I had to do. I made it through the one after this before I finally decided to call it quits as the forward motion of the plot becomes somewhat forced. I also found less and less appeal in Sookie herself other th...more

the story continued after the explosion in From Dead to Worse (2008), Sookie returned to her hometown in Bon Temps. after the vampires revealed their existence to the world, the weres and shifters also came clean with their confessions. while most residents took the news fairy well, there were also those who reacted defensively. when Crystal, Jason's ex-wife, a pregnant were-panther was found dead crucified on a cross, Sookie agreed to observe everyone through her mind-reading ability for her br...more

Charlaine Harris has been a published novelist for over twenty-five years. A native of the Mississippi Delta, she grew up in the middle of a cotton field. Now she lives in southern Arkansas with her husband, her three children, three dogs, and a duck. The duck stays outside.

Though her early output consisted largely of ghost stories, by the time she hit college (Rhodes, in Memphis) Charlaine was wr...more
