I have had this book for a while and have referenced it many times. The book is: Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions: A Comprehensive Introduction to the Religions of the World by James A. Beverley.
This is no lightweight book but a detailed, thorough examination of the world's leading religions. The book is set up alphabetically to make it very easy to use and includes Baha'i to Witchcraft. Each chapter begins with a little bit about the religion then makes its way to a chrono More...

The Nelson’s Illustrated Guide to Religions is a comprehensive, well researched resource for those wanting more information on world religions.
Professor James. A. Beverly has spent over 30 years researching his topic, and has compiled a well written guide to over 200 faiths, sects and cults.
This illustrated hard cover has over 800 pages and includes not only historical information for each religion covered, but profiles, key principles and beliefs, as well as detail More...

Pros
Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions covers more than 200 religions, sects, and cults, most of which the reader might encounter in everyday life. The information for the most part is fairly presented, and his research is well organized, which is impressive.
Features of this book include
1. Historical information on each of the major religions with detailed timeliness.
2. Profiles of each group's primary leaders
3. An inventory of key principles and be More...

This book is a good introduction to modern religions, but I was disappointed by how much critical information was left out in favor of less important information (in my opinion). Also, the organization wasn't consistently handled as to which religions were covered in which section and what information was focused on for each. However, the book was still very usable and useful.
While the history of each religion was briefly covered, the focus was usually on when the important leaders More...

Nelson’s Illustrated Guide to Religions is a guide for evangelical Christians. The book is not a text for readers looking for an objective or multi-perspective study tool.
Beverley is an academic and an evangelical Christian. He openly admits, or warns, that he wrote the book from his evangelical Christian perspective. He writes “I realize that my Christian perspective will create tensions at certain points with followers of other religions or with academics of no religious persuasion More...

Nelson’s Illustrated Guide to Religions: A comprehensive introduction to the religions of the world by James A. Beverley is a very well balanced book on the different religions and beliefs in the world today. Some sites say it has 644 pages but it actually has 850 pages.
Dr. Beverley has done a great service to the Church and general public with this work. The introduction in itself is well worth the book alone. In the introduction he prepares a solid foundation of analyzing the di More...

I read this as part of Thomas Nelson’s Book Review Bloggers program. Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions covers more than 200 religions, sects, and cults, most of them ones the reader might encounter on any given day. The book is arranged with a chapter for each religion. Detailed information is given for each religion including timelines, historical information and summary of major beliefs. There are plenty of figures and charts to break up the text. Of particular interest to C More...

The religious makeup of the world has always fascinated me. Why do different people believe what they believe? What were the beginnings of all these differing viewpoints? This book, Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions: A Comprehensive Introduction to the Religions of the World by James A. Beverley (Thomas Nelson, 2009) does a fairly good job of introducing the reader to the basics of the major faiths as well as those of the lesser known ones.

This book is interesting in a couple of ways. First, it as more of a reference book than something you sit down to read. I was expecting a more conversational book about various religions and their differences; however, the book is neatly organized with each religion, or sect thereof, in its own section. That's not bad, just not what i was expecting. Secondly, with each religion having its own section, i would have assumed a basic alphabetical ordered format of the religions. They are not.

If you have ever pondered the differences between world religions, the 'Nelson's Illustrated Guide to Religions' by James A. Beverley is the resource you need.
The term 'Religion' is defined as 'set of beliefs adhered to by a group of people'. In our contemporary society, religion is man's attempt to reach, organize, or please a god. This includes 'Christianity' as a religion, however, not all religions are counted in 'Christendom', which is the Christian church collectively.
