Windfall (Weather Warden #4)

Rachel Caine
You think you’re having a bad day? Joanne Baldwin has lost her job as a Weather Warden and saving the world doesn’t usually come with a decent pension plan. It also doesn’t come with any guarantees of landing a day job that won’t suck or finding a mystical cure for her critically ill Djinn lover. Well, this is a toughy. It was a decent enough read for its genre and the second half was tough to put down. But the female characters, including the main character, were obsessed with fashion and men in that order and their fabulous bikini-clad bodies, and it really began to get ludicrous given what was going on. It felt weirdly out of sync with the kind of people I know who read these types of books: way too romance-y and mainstream until she was horrified to drive a minivan, which was a littl...more
As the others, this novel is like a whirlwind - or maybe more like a hurricane - battering furiously away at the plot and barely giving the poor protagonist, Joanne Baldwin, time to breathe. Poor Joanne, things just seem to go from bad to worse for her - and that's pretty serious given she's died twice in earlier instalments.
With this volume the epic nature of the plot is becoming more apparent - the djinns have decided to break free of their masters and rebel, the Wardens are corrupted or enfe...more

This series has been sitting in my "To-Read" list for a very long time... longer than this account has been active, as a matter of fact. Now that I've finally gotten started, I'm once again kicking myself for missing out for so long.
This is urban fantasy at its best. I place it up with the likes of Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series, and Karen Chance's Cassandra Palmer series, as an incredibly original concept that really just blew my mind. This is true creativity at work. I am quite fond of the...more

Joanne, the poor girl, has so many different sides gunning for her. The wardens want to magically neuter her now that she is no longer under her thumb. David's condition is quickly deteriorating as well as her own powers. Johnathan wants to destroy her because he blames her for David's condition. Half the Djinn want her dead along with the rest of humanity. As if that wasn't enough, the mess with Quinn is coming back to haunt her in the form of a very determined cop as well as someone even more...more
So, you've had a rough couple of weeks. You've died, been reborn, died again. Your boyfriend isn't human, and he's eating your energy bit by bit. This is were we find Joanne Baldwin, ex weather warden, current morning weather girl, heroine of the series. With David becoming an ifrit, a cruddy job, a recently divorced sister visiting, and ex bosses who want to strip away her powers there's bound to be trouble of epic proportions. The book was a bit of a downer. I eventually wanted to pop Jo in th...more
I give it 3.75, it was a fun book and a good installment in the series. It's definitely not stand-alone book, it really needs to be read as part of the big story arc. Part of what makes it interesting to me is the issue of how Jo deals with being almost powerless and alone while being attacked from all sides, magical and mundane. In addition, there is are the big story story arcs that are being explored, that of her relationships with David and Lewis, of the roles of Djinn and Wardens in the wor...more

Anyone who like urban fantasy
At first the "Interludes" kinda annoyed me, but when it got near the end and the reason for the interludes was clear, I appreciated that POV. It was unexpected and now I wish it was a little more in depth. I don't want to say too much and spoil it.
So far this series is great, it's action pack and fast moving. And within the parameters of the characters capabilities it is believable. Sometimes an author will make a foe too big and bad and have the heroes who are less powerful still be able to, I...more

Windfall is the fourth book in the series and picks up from the end of Chill Factor. Jo has quit the weather wardens and is now working as a lowly weather girl. She doesn't even get to wear a bikini but instead is forced into hideous foam suns and clouds for her strangely accurate yet deeply unlikable boss. If that wasn't bad enough, her sister turns up on her doorstep husbandless, homeless and above all without her extensive wardrobe. She can't turn her away despite the fact that she has to do...more
In this book, we see the follow on story of Joanne Baldwin. She is an ex weather warden who is trying to make a normal life for her self, as well as find a way to save her Djinn boy friend David *swoon*. Joanne get a shock when her sister turns up on her door step after splitting with her husband and finding a new boyfriend. but the boyfriend isnt what he seems and become yet another problem for Jo to deal with. The problems seem to be growing for Jo as she needs to save her sister and she has t...more
Spoiler Alert! In Windfall, the fifth installment of the Weather Warden series, a year has passed since Joanne came face to face with the man who raped her, was betrayed by her friends, discovered she was pregnant by David who is now half Ifrit before finally turning her back on her job as a Weather Warden. She’s been warned against using her powers by the Wardens or she runs the risk of being neutered. This becomes less of a problem as her powers are at an all time low due to a weakened David i...more
After a long period of being too stressed even to read, this series was the perfect antidote, and it got me back on track, so thank you Rachel!
This is the Mills & Boon of the fantasy world, easy reading with very mild sexual references, quite a lot of slushy love stuff and far too much emphasis on fashion. Having said all that, the heroine loves fast super-cars as much as her Manolo's (designer shoes) and whilst she is certainly described as attractive, beauty is NOT her thing, model status...more

Okay, so I liked the first book in this series and the second and third books were really, really good. But this one... I actually almost didn't finish it. Why? Because pretty much every character annoyed me in this book!
I've sort of liked Joanne up until now. Sure, she's maybe a bit... too much. But she also has a lot of qualities that I really like. But in this book she's just too stubborn, too willing to trust the first stranger that is nice to her. And her sister... Don't even get me starti...more

This is a weak point in the series. Though I liked some of Jo's problem's with her new line of employment, overall I found the new supporting cast (her annoying, weak and grasping sister, and her new bestie the younger, hotter and even more fashion conscious whats-her-face) droll and irritating. I felt disturbed and a little depressed along with Jo, trapped in her crappy job and apartment and the wall of her life closing in, and her sister maxing out her credit cards. The introduction of Eamon o...more
This one felt a little slow getting started, but before I realised it I was about halfway through, so being slow to start definitely doesn't mean it's a lemon. I think the reason this feels pretty slow is because it lacks the 'ticking clock' element ... there's no life-threatening catastrophe in the wings (well, there is, but it's set apart from the main storyline and dealt with in a series of interludes between chapters). In many ways it's more like a consolidation of old business in anticipati...more

I can't get enough of the Rachel Caine's Weather Warden series.
When Joanne Baldwin gave up her position as a Weather Warden, she found herself working at a news station as a weather girl. Definitely a step down on the power/success ladder. Then her sister shows up on her doorstep and helps complicate her life. And she could deal with all of extra complications if her Djinn boyfriend, David, could fix everything for her. Unfortunately, he can't. He's draining her powers and leaving them both vul...more

I have to say, what I love most about the Weather Warden series is being in Joanne's head. She has attitude and she's not afraid to show it. When things get tough, she's not going to run away. She'll fight for the people she loves. Sometimes she's not the wisest, like (view spoiler)

Windfall takes us on another hell in a hand basket ride with Joanne Baldwin. Last go round Joanne had walked away from the Wardens with David, her dying Djinn lover, in very dire straits. Things are no better at present where we find Joanne trying to make a regular living by working as a weather girl for the local tv news while avoiding sexual harassment from her handsy, slime ball of a boss.

Holy cow! Windfall is totally my favorite book in the series right now, because once the book starts, it doesn't stop, and you're left wanting to read the next book to see what happens!
The connection between her current boss, Marvelous Marvin and Bad Bob from Ill Wind, was surprising...but not too surprising either.
Just when you think things can't get any worse...they do! At this point, things are going to get really interesting because the Wardens are now at war with the Dijinn. Based on what I...more

This is the 4th Weather Warden novel, which features Joanne Baldwin. I'd been waiting very IMpatiently for this instalment, and it didn't disappoint! I LOVED IT! These books are always a rollercoaster ride for the narrator as she finds herself in one bad situation after another.

I really enjoyed this one. Only took off the one star for predictability. There were certain events that were just bound to happen and certain bad guys that you knew were bad guys right from the start. And I really, really miss the flashbacks.
Anyway, I still love Jonathan. He cracks me up despite all the tension. He's cocky and stubborn and dangerous. My favorite kind of character. And of course David, the sex happy Ifrit. Oh, I was really hoping he'd devour Ashan. Damn him and his guilt. And I...more

I'm torn between giving this book four stars or five stars. I think it's actually better than the first three, but I liked it less. It was darker and more painful. And ended in a cliffhanger, just like the others. Drat! Makes it hard to take a break from the series, but I think I'm going to.

This was a great uplift in the weather warden series. The writing was better overall an improvement. I like the books though but I can acknowledge things like this can get gobbledy goop now and then. Isn’t it this gobbledy goop though that keeps us sane? In a reality of everything being so damn series I love stuff like this. It in combination with welcomed state of the art literature keeps the mind whole.

I liked this better overall than the other books in the series, but the ending sucked. Even the happy ending was a WTF. Joanne is trying to make a living outside of being a weather warden and is instructed not to use her abilities or its lobotomy time. David is turning more and more and she's not having any good effect on him although everyone keeps telling her she needs to do something but not what that something is. And the baby question, that is something I can't explain because I don't under...more
A slow start but it really picks up the pace. Everything is the line for Jo. David is getting sicker, she's getting weaker, and she's banned from using her pwoers under threat of having them permenantly removed.
Her adventure in Vegas is still affecting her life. There's a cop on her tail, she's no longer a Warden, and she's working for sleazy TV weatherman.
But the book takes off as Jo struggles to save herself, her child, and the man she loves. And then it tosses the reader off a cliff and leav...more

I enjoy this series so much I am actually surprised. Not one book has been like the others, although parts have been similar like David saving Joanne and her always being the scapegoat. I’m always surprised at how the book ends. I never see it coming. And the cast of characters is always great fun, especially Joanne.
I liked that this book was a little less frantic and catastrophic. A lot happens, but after the third book it does feel like Joanne was given a little bit of a break. And when I say...more
