"Originally published in Swedish as Roda rummet (1879)"--T.p. verso.

Strindberg (1849-1912) is best known outside Sweden as a dramatist, but he was also a prolific writer of novels, short stories, essays, journalism and poetry-as well as a notable artist and photographer. Although he spent many years abroad, Strindberg was born, grew up and died in Stockholm. A satire of th

I went on a tear on 2007 and read all of Henrik Ibsen and all of August Strindberg. Before I could get to all of Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, I had to turn back to writing, and I can't read while I write. Strindberg is wonderful. A bit more sarcastic than Ibsen and less tragedic. But both are great.
Though I'm not a big fan of Peer Gynt. Strindberg's parody of Peer Gynt, Lucky Per's Journey is a hoot. If you ever have a chance to see it performed, definitely go.

I haven't reviewed individual plays.

The Dickens influence is inarguable. Oh wait. I can't say I'm a big fan of Dickens, what with his superficial plots and Victorian humor. Strindberg tries the same techniques, and I suppose I would have gotten a bit more of the satire if I'd lived in 19th Century Sweden. Yeah, this books didn't do anything for me. I haven't read/seen any of Strindberg's plays, so I can't make comparisons. But the Red Room, supposedly Sweden's first modern novel, bored me to tears.

Underbar bok.

The Red Room is a strong social commentary of Sweden in the 1870's that was remarkable in its foreshadowing of Sweden in the 20th century. It was also remarkable in its depiction of the Bohemian nihilism in Sweden that was likewise present throughout Europe. A few quotations that I liked were:

1. Genius is the infinite capacity for taking pains.

2. In the world outside nations are bellowing with fury against oppression, but in Sweden all we do is to celebrate jubilees.

3. All [political] parties ha

Podjeća me na Branislava Nušića.

; ...more

This may not be the exact version I read in English or Deutsch but it's close enough.

Probably my only entry at goodreads for Strindberg as the rest of what I read by this author just, as this, didn't do anything for me.

This may have been an early or groundbreaking writing about gatherings of people discussing things in way not previously written about yet it never spoke to me. These disenchanted and rebelliously portrayed provocateur wannabee's just seem to complacent.

Hvilken herlig bok, hvilke fornøyelige sleivspark, hvilken mester! Det er synd alle kjempene er døde. Men litteraturen etter dem dør ikke.
Philip Lane
I found this to be very confusing and difficult to follow. I really didn't get a clear idea of topic, plot or character. It is possibly a book that would improve with some sort of companion pointing the way. A disappointment for me.

A collection of young men in Stockholm, struggling artists, writers and actors who know each other. The main character Falk is a guy you feel sympathy for, but he seems a little too trusting both in friends and family.

This is an earlier work, much milder, but still quite entertaining. Part of my family came from Stockholm around 1900, and this novel gave me plenty of aha so that explains that moments.
Sebastian Ek
Satire that stil feels relevant.
Cynthia
Too tied to time and place to be of more than background interest. Strindberg's plays are much much better. I read this in the "authorized" English translation of 1913.

Recommends it for: those interested to learn more about the past of Sweden.
I've never heard and known more about Sweden than now, I guess - the most interesting part for this subject: Olle's letter near to the end.
John Freeman
Considered one of the first "Modernist" novels, I can see how Strindberg influenced a later, more famous Scandinavian writer, Knut Hamsun.
Viktor Forssell
Snyen
Good portrayal of passionate youth trying to make it in various creative endeavors. Somewhat depressing towards the end though.

Johan August Strindberg was a Swedish writer, playwright, and painter. Along with Henrik Ibsen, Søren Kierkegaard, Selma Lagerlöf and Hans Christian Andersen he is arguably the most influential and famous of all Scandinavian authors. Strindberg is known as one of the fathers of modern theatre. His work falls into two major literary movements, Naturalism and Expressionism. He is widely read in Swed ...more
