That's right a whole review on my manga BLACK STAR!!! In this manga you will witness me being a awesome, but what else would you expect from a BIG man like me!!! So lets get to it!!! When we last left off I had just single handedly defeated Sid the teacher who mysteriously went missing and we heard was a zombie now. Turns out he was. Hmmm who knew. Anyways....

M - O.k hold it. First off the manga is called Soul Eater not...more BS - Hello all my loyal fans I AM BLACK STAR!!! And this is a review on ME!!!
That's right a whole review on my manga BLACK STAR!!! In this manga you will witness me being a awesome, but what else would you expect from a BIG man like me!!! So lets get to it!!! When we last left off I had just single handedly defeated Sid the teacher who mysteriously went missing and we heard was a zombie now. Turns out he was. Hmmm who knew. Anyways....

M - O.k hold it. First off the manga is called Soul Eater not Black Star and second it was a group effort if I remember correctly.

BS - Oh right....I'm sure you helped but...

M - And besides the reviewer is waiting to his job if you don't mind. Sorry mister reviewer Black Star does get carried away some times. When ever your ready. Anytime time now. Would you start already!!!

Me - Oh sorry...didn't realize you were done. Was kinda into my book. O.k guys this...oh wait haven't come up with a cool pen name. Oh well this is ______ in that case. And I'm reviewing Soul Eater Vol 2 with two manga characters this time. Where did they come from. Who knows? Like Natsuki Takaya I get very little sleep. Which most likely explains this review. Volume 2 opens where volume 1 left off. Stein is introduced. Stein can read souls so he checks out the relationships between the kids and their weapons. The kids fight him. Before the fight we learn that Stein has a very flexible soul and can read souls. Maka also has this ability which is the first you hear of it. Can't think of any other time she would have to have used it in volume 1, so I guess we can pass up the tact on feeling. During the fight which turns out to be a test we find out that Black Star can shoot his souls wavelength into an opponent. A useful skill that unfortunately Stein can counteract. And Maka/Soul can resonate their souls to do a super sythe attack called Witchhunter. There are lots of great moments in the fight but I think my favorite is when Stein is about to destroy Maka and Soul throws himself down over Maka to protect her. Death the Kid, fearing for their safety, decides to attend the academy and for Patty/Liz. I would like to have had Death the Kid show up and do some damage but that was saved for the next chapter. Ok I'd like to do a chapter by chapter but it would be way to long. So in a nut shell. Black Star tries to use soul as a weapon, we get a good look at just what kinda power Kid has. Find out Lord Deaths soul is being used to protect the academy. Meet a miester who is permafused with his weapon. Crona/the Death Sword. And eats human souls not kishin. Maka can't defeat him. Stein and her father to the rescue. Great battle. And a witch has invaded the academy. The same which that....oh wait that's volume three. Well I guess that's it. Till next time remember a strong soul dwells with a strong mind and body. So go exorcise or something.(less)

The series starts settling into a storyline in vol 2 which has barely no fan service except two things that are pretty much totally unnecessary both surrounding Tsubaki (her on the cover dressed to show she’s either panty-less or wearing a thong and her in a group shower scene) Those aside, the mangaka is obviously moving from the 3 one-shots beginning in vol 1 to a coherent plot.

Team Tsubaki/Black Star & Team Maka/Soul are doing remedial lessons (something plot wise that bugs me. Now Black Star has never managed to get a soul for Tsubaki but Maka/Soul had previously gained 99 souls before losing them all for screwing up. They obviously know what they’re doing and it’s suggested in these lessons they don’t know how to work at a team. See a problem?) In their last remediation, they captured the former professor now Zombie Sid and he’s led them to his creator, Dr. Franken Stein.

The storyline becomes two-pronged, one with the kids fighting Stein and the other with Spirit, Maka’s father and Lord Death’s current weapon, who used to be Stein’s partner and unwitting research subject. Stein lives to dissect and as a meister he is unrivaled. However, is he the enemy they think he is and if so, can they possibly take someone so above their skill set.

The next chapters detail Death the Kid’s first day at school wherein Black Star and Soul skip class (which I suppose is a bit spoilery for the above story arc). Black Star wants to prove himself by beating Kid up. Unfortunately for him, Kid isn’t just any meister. He’s Lord Death’s son and therefore a death god by default.

The last chapters begin what will be the first long story arc for the series. Soul and Maka are in Italy hunting down someone on Shinigami’s list when she senses danger. She drags Soul off to investigate but end up facing someone she has no idea how dangerous s/he is. Crona, the demon sword meister. Crona is the daughter/son of Medusa, a witch (his or her gender is unknown and a running gag in the series. The anime and so far the manga is referring to Crona as male). Crona’s mother is manipulating the young man into becoming a kishin, a supremely evil soul. She has embedded his weapon, the demon sword, inside his body. Crona is a bundle of neurosis and self doubt, incapable of telling Mommy no.

Unfortunately for Maka and Soul, Crona is a very good fighter and he has black blood. This blood can not only make Crona’s body impossibly hard and cut-resistant, he can use it as a weapon. Soul can’t do anything against him. Crona, on the other hand, badly hurts Soul. Luckily for Maka and Soul, her dad and his handler come to help them but there will be lasting effects for Soul.

BLACK STAR I WANT YOU TO DIE!!!

And what the heck is up with that panel of Tsubaki naked? Seriously. She's like.. 15... I know that fully naked girls who are technically not of age is common in manga, but usually it has .. I don't know, romantic or romantic-comedy situations. Just because you don't draw the nipples doesn't mean it's not weird. It makes her look kind of sexless and creepy, like an android doll... Freaking weird.

This is a marked improvement over the first volume - especially in that the first volume had a RIDICULOUS amount of fanservice, and this one one only really had one moment in one of the first two chapters. Even better is that the character of Chrona is finally introduced, who is one of the more intriguing characters in the series and who is perhaps one of the most dangerouly unstable.

Now it's getting very interesting...

A real enemy emerges in the form of a witch who has infiltrated the school and has created a kishin, a meister and weapon who eat good souls instead of bad. How will the students defeat a nearly unstoppable enemy? What will happen when Soul is infected with the blood of the kishin?

Because I watched the anime first, I started reading the books. The second volume had my favorite parts in it, like Kid, Liz and Patty's first day at the DWMA, and Crona's first apperance (Yay!).

Death the kid, Liz, and Patty meet Maka, Soul, Black Star, Tsubaki, and Doctor Stein. And Maka and Soul meet Chrona and Ragnarok how are about to be turned into a Kishin ( Kishin=evil soul ) and is being controlled by the evil witch madusa. Will Chrona be able to stop herself or will she become a Kishin?

The fun continues. The stories remain amusing, but the action sequences suffer a bit from the manga's static format. Still, it earns some points for delivering cover-to-cover weird.

I love this series a lot. I think it's one of the best. The pictures are very well drawn and the anime is even better, in my opinion.
This book has just the right amount of suspense and action to keep me motivated to continue reading.
