The Imperfect Enjoyment takes us on a journey from teenage to adulthood and the stops in between. Very humorous at time and at others raunchy, our protagonist worries if he is black enough when he comes from rural Ohio to Nebraska. He watches the fashions and makes crude remarks about women's body shapes. He at one time thought he had found his life mate, but decided before he left college that the relationship was over, especially when she finds him in bed with a younger student.

The Imperfect Enjoyment is a male's perspective on sex, love, and relationships -- it is "a bachelor's memoir." I digested the story in one sitting and it was good enough that I couldn't put the book down.

The memoir is a straight forward and no holds barred look at a man in his twenties and his relationships with women, both serious and not so serious. The book is written in a contemporary style with a lot of slang and easy going language. Despite this the writing is superb. The book flows well...more

I wasn’t sure what to expect in this tale about a black male’s coming of age. Would I be able to see any parallels to the experiences of a white, female baby-boomer? Would it just be a collection of what-I-did-to-get-laid reminiscences? (The guy thing, in other words.)

Fear not – this was a very enjoyable read. I laughed a lot and identified with the author’s search for love – and lust. Making the right connection with another human is seldom easy, occasionally pathetic, but well worth it in the...more

I finished this book a few days ago, but have been mulling over what to write in the review.

I didn't dislike the book and read it all the way through, and yet I found myself a little detached about it.

This is a memoire of sorts, detailing part of the author's life and the women he is involved with at different times. There's nothing wrong with the writing and the author seems to have been fairly honest with himself - at times I found myself cringing at some of his decisions and wished I could y...more

This was an interesting book that kept my interest and read quickly. I read it on a trip in the car and I liked it, but I really didn't understand why? Nothing big was revealed and I really didn't learn anything new, well except that I don't think like a man and I'm happy for that. This is a coming of age type of story, Dewan is growing up and feeling his way through his growing pains. Love, loss, love again and lots of sex. Anyone having grown up can identify with many of the issues the author...more

This memoir chronicles the authors dating life after moving to San Diego shortly after completing his undergraduate degree. It is well-edited and does not suffer from annoying grammar issues. Mr. Gibson manages to tell his story in an up front and humorous manner. Mr. Gibson's story begins and ends with long-term relationships and it has a bit of everything in between. He comes across as a pretty likeable guy.

I found parts of this story to be interesting and a bit funny. About half-way into this...more

The Imperfect Enjoyment is truly a manly read. A raunchy romp of a novel written by a self proclaimed "international chick banger".

A mans perspective on finding love, in many different forms, this book was a bit of an eye opener. After reading some of his blush-worthy debauchery, you wouldn't expect him to find a stable relationship. When he does, its a challenge that he isn't quite sure how to handle. While he arguably takes all the wrong steps towards his own perfect enjoyment, he manages to f...more

This is totally an entertaining read, aside of very much of sex talk and stuff, and totally different from what I've ever read. The author was likely in a quest to find the perfect enjoyment in a relationship when at some point he thought that some imperfection in relationship will turn out okay and enjoyable just good. But what I'm quite off is that, he was like finding more sex than love, well, I don't know. So, maybe it was because he was finding the relation perfection. The fact that the boo...more

Imperfect Enjoyment is a memoir of Dewan Gibson's journey from 'playa' to maturity. Leaving his hometown of Cleveland behind for a the fast and loose lifestyle of college in San Diego.
It's a unique perspective, an unapologetic and honest viewpoint of sex and relationships from a young African American man. Despite his intention to take advantage of the casual one night conquests on offer, Dewan finds himself in a committed but complicated relationship with a young Arab woman, Haniyah. The relati...more

Gibson's memoir is comedic, truthful, and very relatable.

I got into this book as soon as I got it. The book cover, author's info, and Gibson's "crazy ass" hand-written message on the first page were all hilarious. And it only got funnier once I dove in. It took me under a day to read this, and I laughed out loud the entire time.

This bachelor's memoir is not unlike my own experiences or many of my girlfriends'. Rife with embarassing stories, exciting conquests, the unforgettables and unmentiona...more

Language a bit harsh in spots, but somehow the author maintains grace in his prose. Extremely funny, an actual LOL book. Also, brings up issues related to Muslim/non-Muslim dating and interracial relationships in general. Loved it.

Well written and entertaining memoir. It was interesting (and pretty damn funny) to hear a male perspective on this time frame of life (20's). I liked Dewan's ability to laugh at himself as we'll as his honesty.

After reading My Booky Wooky by Russell Brand I came across this book. The language is different than what I used to, but the story was very-very-very funny. Writer has a unique voice. Great under the radar book.

Read this form my SBE blog. It's a tamer version of Tucker Max's "I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell." Slightly less funny too.

A guilty pleasure to read and re-read, it's a good book especially for the black male looking to get a few laughs.

I was hooked on the first page. While this is a short book, it was great and very funny.

It was a little slow to get into, and didn't really find the first half very amusing. BUT somewhere around page 85 I got sucked in. I went from smiling at the jokes to laughing out loud and my friend thinking I am nuts. It is a very interesting look at a "playa" lifestyle, without the cynicism towards "bitches and hoes" or a glamorizing of the lifestyle, sandwiched between ill-fated romances all while searching for that one true thing.

this was a pretty funny story.. I enjoyed reading it. There are definitely laugh out loud moments.
it's a interesting story, i've never read a bachelor story. it's one of those stories if there is some progress of a marriage or something after bachelor life.. reality stories, there's always a need to know where someone's life led them in hopes of it being complete or fullfilled in one way or another.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I were the target audience. That said it was good and I think the author could have sucess writing for film or TV. Some of the scenes were pretty funny and I could see them play out in my mind.

I am going to pass this on to a friend who I;m sure will enjoy this.

The book was good - I think a male would enjoy it more than I did. It was interesting to see another side of the dating scene.
