This set was recommended to me by a 9th grader, and I'm giving the hardcover set to my granddaughter on her 10th birthday. While the writing style is not up to my J.K.Rowling yardstick, the books offer good characters and an unusual premise. Percy and others are "demigods", meaning that one of their parents is a Greek god. Thus, Riordan also brings young readers into the world of mythology while providing an entertaining action storyline.

Loved these book, a little dissapointed by the movie for the lightning thief though. It shouldve been alot better since the books were amazing.
I was really impressed and surprised by this series. I loved learning about myths and folklore in middle school, and these books were really refreshing as I got to remember all the Greek gods I'd heard of and learn about a lot more I'd never come across before.
Rick Riordan was clever to make a character from a broken one-parent home with learning disabilities and make him a demigod. His books appeal to his audience very directly, though I feel there's plenty of cross-over for people...more

I am as obsessed as a person can be with PJ. Annabeth is so cool, Grover is so hilarious and Percy (at least in the movie) is SUCH a hottie! I watched the movie only hours ago and yes, it's true: they practically ripped the book apart. Where's Clarisse? That's what I ask. Where's Dionysus and Annabeth's dream of being an architect and relationship with Luke and Grover's obsession with Pan and the REAL way Percy came across the pearls? They were never Persephone's. I mean, Grover is white! Annabe...more
So many reviews of this series compare it to Harry Potter (and with good reason) but as a fan of both (and a beginning skeptic myself) I have to say that though they are similar series, Percy Jackson stands on its own. In the Lightening Thief, Percy is so Harry Potter, the camp is so Hogwarts, Chiron is so Dumbledore- I completely admit that. In fact when this series first came out I refused to read it and criticized it for being a rip-off. But for some reason, I gave it a try (at the request of...more
My sister is a third grade teacher. She lent me two young adult series, and she starts school this week. So I took a short break from my usual reading material and read the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, The Battle of the Labyrinth, and The Last Olympians. They were exciting books, and although a little dark, I did enjoy them. There were great adventures and it was interesting to be reintroduced to the characters from Greek my...more
I read this series along with my 10 year old granddaughter. I was curious about the twist of putting mythology into the modern day in this children's series. I wasn't sure how well an author could successfully walk the tightrope appropriately between the scarey fantasy of mythology and the familiar reality of the modern day setting.

Favorite: book IV - Battle of the Labyrinth
I majored in Greek mythology at college, so I can say happily, with some authority, that Riordan really knows his stuff and gets it right. No matter how brief the reference and how it's reused for the adventure, he gives snippets that kids, anyone, can latch onto and be consistent with more academic approaches. Also means, if you're already familiar with the mythology, he lets you feel very clever by letting you recognize a being a page in a...more

READ THESE BOOKS!
though made for a younger audience of the preteens/8-12 range, Riordan is still an amazing story-teller. it can be compared to Harry Potter, but only because the protagonist is a teenaged boy who suddenly gains super-human powers, has 2 friends, and goes to a special training facility.

Really fun stories, noteworthy for making Greek mythology accessible. Presents lots of obscure minor gods and monsters, and brings to life several classic Greek myths, including the Titanomachy. Tends to lean toward the younger end of the "young adult" spectrum with some of the humor employed, but it's by no means annoying. Riordan simply writes junior high and high school boys very well.

Whenever I first heard of these books (from Courtlyn, who is still obsessed with them) I absolutely hated them for no good reason at all. I skimmed through the first and said it was boring, unoriginal, and a huge copy of Harry Potter. I dubbed Percy as Harry, Annabeth as Hermione, Grover as Ron... you get the picture. This was back when I went through one of my biggest phases ever, a Harry Potter phase. I always picked on Courtlyn for liking these books and I thought they were just downright hor...more
I read all of the books in this series one after the other, and instead of a detailed review of each one, I'll provide some highlights of what I liked about the series and each book as applicable. Synopses of the plots follow at the end.
The overarching story across all the books is that Percy and his friends fight to stop the rise of Kronos a Titan, a child of Ouranus and Gaea.

Absolutely loved this series. Riordan is such a great writer because he illustrates images in your mind and captivates you immediately. With this series, Riordan creates a complete alternate universe within and above the boundaries of Mount Olympus, the Greek gods, and the United States.
The story is based on the life of Percy Jackson and his adventures as he struggles with his identity as a demi-god. A demi-god is a half mortal, half god being who is the outcome of a human procreating...more

This series is amazing. Rick riordan writes in a way that makes you hate a character one minute and absolutely love them the next, that keeps you frantically turning the pages to see what happens next, and that makes you instantly want to get your hands on the next book once you finish the one your reading. I fell in love with this series Because it was real and unreal, scary at times and funny at others, action packed and heartfelt. It doesn't matter if you 15 or 25, in would reccomend this ser...more
Rick Riordan is a strong and capable storyteller. What I find so appealing about these books is the feeling that I’m right there with Percy, that it’s not some narrating it all, no instead I am inside Percy’s head, he’s the one telling me the story. I haven’t found a narrator as convincing as Percy Jackson, Riordan is so sure of his writing and Percy’s inner voice and personality, that it never feels forced or fake or unrealistic, in fact it is so convincing I tend to “forget” that Percy isn’t a...more
Humorous, unpredictable and fast paced, the series provides young readers with the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of mythology. It is an easy read for preteens and is one of those best-sellers that can get a child hooked on reading. The story is told in the main character’s own words, sacrificing richness for relevance in style and language. The fact that themes of heroism, friendship and sacrifice are well explored somewhat makes up for this. As is typical of Greek mythology, the boo...more
buku ini sedikit banyak memuaskan keingin-tahuan saya tentang greek mythology.. bahkan saya selalu berpikir harusnya Indonesia (departement pendidikan khususnya) memasukkan pelajaran Mitologi Yunani ke dalam kurikulumnya.. anyways, back to the book..
singkatnya, Percy adalah seorang remaja yang belakangan ketahuan memiliki setengah darah dewa Yunani dalam dirinya. Dia dikirim ke half-blood camp dimana semua anak-anak setengah dewa/i berkumpul. dalam setiap buku-bukunya, Percy harus me...more

If you ever read Harry Potter series, you might be a half disappointed because the main character is quite represent Harry-Hermione-Ron in a form of Greek Mythology. Summer camp (instead of one-year-school), demigod people (half god people) vs pure & half-blood witch, monsters, Chiron (a wise Centaurus as adviser) vs Albus Dumbledore, a-quite-same-forecast-but-different-subject about someone has to die in order to save the world (Olympus vs Hogwarts = save the world), quite same love problem, et...more
I think this is a fantastic book series for kids -- Cameron has read the first book and loved it, plus it sparked a real interest in Greek mythology. I love how the book brings the Greek gods and the Titans to life and gives them modern touches, like Ares riding a motorcycle and wearing RayBans to hide his fiery eyes. The story lines are creative and the books all tie together with events in book one being integral to the story in book five, much like the Harry Potter series.

The Percy Jackson series is about a teenage boy named Percy Jackson, a dyslexic student with ADHD who has been kicked out of several schools and branded a troublemaker for events that occur that are beyond his control - such as blowing up the school's band room. Percy has no idea why these things happen to him until the age of 12, when he discovers that he is in fact a demigod and a son of one of the "Big Three" - Poseidon.

I have such mixed feelings regarding the Percy Jackson books that I am unable to write this review from my usual perspective. Instead, I have pinpointed three aspects of my personality that offer up various points of view: the Harry Potter fangirl, the intellectual snob, and the Voice of Reason.

Maybe I would have given this series more stars if I were 10 years old - perhaps I'm being unfair since these books were written for 10-year-olds and so it's my own fault that I read them...

The Percy Jackson books have hilarious chapter-titles that the actual stories have trouble living up to. It was an enjoyable read, through-out, but Riordan fell into the classic YA trap of assuming his readers aren't as intelligent as they probably are. The myths of the Greek gods were used to create plot devices that would have been far more interesting if the characters were treated as real people rather than only was to further the plot or get a cheap laugh. "Twists" in the plot wer...more
Since I own the Percy Jackson' series on box, I'm gonna review it too, though. Overall it has super nice plot and the adventure was satisfying though. And this all books worth the price, and may left you addiction. Not disappointing series, and these was great. Each book has its own twisted end, and each book will left you fully amazed. My fave was the fourth books, but at the end I love them all. For fantasy seekers, highly recommended! :)
Zach's class at school started reading the first book in this series together and Zach came home so excited! I had purchased the first four (the last is still in hardcover) from Scholastic in October, so he quickly sped past where his class was at, and ate up the other four before New Years. We couldn't get him to put the books down! Where's Zach? Upstairs reading. So I had to know what was so great.

Percy Jackson is far from normal. After moving to many different schools because of various reasons, he finally decides to go to the Yancy Academy. During a field-trip, the mathematics teacher turns out to be a furry (from Greek mythology), and tries to kill him. Grover, Percy's best friend turns out to be a satyr. In order to escape from the furries, Percy goes with his mother to Camp Half-Blood, which is a camp designed to train demigods. His mother is killed by a Minotaur during the journ...more
They were all right. It's impossible not to compare them all to Harry Potter, which is too bad, because they should be able to stand on their own, but: One Chosen Boy who has One Clever Girl companion and One Hapless Boy companion--the comparison is inevitable.

A great series of books! After all, who doesn't enjoy reading about Greek gods in a modern day setting?!?! The characters are heartwarming and I really wanted them to succeed and overcome all of the obstacles in the books. there is humor, action and some heart-warming moments in each of the books! These are fast reads for adults and good ones for kids!
This series is entertaining, especially if you're into Classical mythology (one of my favorite books growing up was the Book of Greek Myths, written and illustrated by Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire). The series is written for kids - so be sure you adjust your expectations regarding level of difficulty. I personally enjoy "young adult" fiction - I find it entertaining and sometimes more creative than fiction for adults. Overall the series is good, but individually the books improve as...more
