I didn't have any expectations for the book but I liked it. It surprised me! I knew right away that Paul was going to be trouble, he was way to obsessed with Randel. Mary is quite a character, I was rooting for her the whole time and I was proud of her at the end and the decision she made. But she does seem to have bad luck with finding the right guy. I see that this book isn't really highly rated (other editions), but I loved it.

Spoiler alert - there is a scene near the end of the book where the main character reveals a secret to her daughter, and it turns out that the kids knew all along and had kept the secret for her; they'd found her hiding place and read her manuscripts with great delight. It's moments like this that make books for me.

im mad because i got through the beginning trusting it would get better but ended up finishing it only to make sure it would end the predictable way it was going. and the was like the author fell asleep at the typewriter
