I was asked to review this book in celebration of the re-release of Chances for ereaders.
Chances is the first book in Jackie Collins Lucky Santangelo series. This book literally has everything you can ever want in a story. There is family drama, mystery, murder, suspense, romance, and a lil comedy.

The story starts with Gino Santangelo as a young boy. Continues telling his story with his wife, Maria, their 2 children, Lucky and Mario, and many of their thug like friends.

My favorite story line is...more

I've been hearing the name Lucky Santangelo for quite sometime now and I've been meaning to check out her story I just don't know when I am going to get around to it, and then Jackie Collins decided to self-publish and then goes my oppotunity to get a copy and say WOW!! At first I thought this is a reprint and some changes were made to modernize it. I am glad none of this is true, the only reason for the new cover is because it is an ebook version.

I actually read this book a number of years ago when I was not quite but nearly sweet 16. I have to admit being the hormonal teenage that I was back then I actually fell head over heels in love with Gino Santangelo! I could not put this book down, it was exciting, fast paced, the chapters alternate between two different characters with two different stories but you know they'll come together somewhere. You read about the main characters past and present which upon finishing the book leaves you r...more

Chances was exactly the right book at the right time for me. I’d been working very hard and needed a break. Happily, the next weekend was sunny and I was able to spend a lot of it out in the garden with my pink yoga mat (same shade as the book cover, incidentally), a pillow, and this book.

Chances starts in 1977, as crime boss Gino Santangelo is on his way back to New York after a period of exile. Daughter Lucky, who has been running the show in his absence, isn’t thrilled and a power struggle se...more

In my teens I found a dog-eared copy of Jackie Collins "Chances" laying on a park bench. I picked it up and started reading the story of Gino Santangelo. What started out as a boring afternoon became my introduction into adult fiction and my love for Jackie Collins.

For three days straight everything in my life stopped. I read this book at breakfast, on the way to school, after school, while out with friends and I did my chores. I even hid it from my mom because I knew she would think the book wa...more

I will start by saying that this book was WAY outside of my genre. This book is a far cry from the dragons, elves, and magic that I'm used to reading about. So, when my co-worker lent it to me I was reluctant to read it. But, I felt it would be impolite of me not to, seeing as she'd been so nice to bring a book for me after she found out I liked to read.

I was very surprised by how much I liked this book. The old-timey gangsters and organized crime aspects were very interesting. Ever since taking...more

I LOVE these books about the Santangelo family, and this one kicks it all off! I read them in my high school days, but really want to go back and read all of them again! This is just one of those mindless beach reads, but with action, sex, mobsters, bad marriages, and trouble! I give it two thumbs up!

I read this 20+ years ago and loved it. I was a kid, thirsting for adventure...all kinds of adventure. Fast forward to the present and a year ago I read 50 Shades of Whatever and I thought it sucked. Awful writing, maybe a 1/2 way decent imagination.

It got me to thinking about Chances - and would I still like it or did I outgrow it...and I decided to give it a whirl (as I do sometimes with books I have read before)...and I'm not going to say I loved it with the enthusiasm I had as a teenager bu...more

I actually read this book years ago. I still have the physical paperback book. Actually, I have 3 or 4 of the books in this series in paperback format. However, I recently decided to get and listen to the audiobook version. The audiobook version by Simon & Schuster Audio is actually done in two parts (Gino's Story and Lucky's Story) and is read by Jackie Collins herself. It reminded me why I love this series and the characters. Attempting to go through all the Lucky Santangelo books now. I m...more

The first book in the Lucky Santangelo saga, Chances is a pretty good read, especially if you like a good dose of violence, sex and murder. The story jumps around quite a bit and most characters get a good resolution. The main problem I had was that major events get glossed over and whatever pathos we should see and feel is missing. For instance, Lucky finds her mother floating in the pool, the result of a hit by Pinky, a mobster. Instead of exploring how awful all this is for a young girl and t...more

Wow!! Another fantastic novel from Jackie Collins. It’s a classy , sexy & a tasteful novel that will teach you that once in there’s no way out-Even after reading for days I have been dreaming wow it’s a great book…..& I want to read the next novel also.

Chances - tells all about Gino’s success & how Lucky (Gino’s Daughter) take in charge of her father’s empire. It just made me realize that this is not a men’s world but also a woman’s world too. A woman can rule the world.
It just makes...more

I heard of Jackie Collins when her last book came out last september, and it was so nicely introduced that I jumped on google and searched her. Next thing I was at my local book store and i bought the entire Lucky collection.
Lucky is the woman every woman wants to be, and every man wants!!
She drop dead gorgeous, full of life, and never scared of giving a piece of her mind.
Her father, Gino, is the man everybody, both men and women wants!
You fall in love with this family the minute you pick up t...more

What to say about this book that hasn't already been said before? I love reading the reviews for this book, especially the one about the girl that found a dogeared copy on a park bench and hid it in her house when she couldn't read it and how she tried to read it at every available opportunity. It really is that good and I only wish my experience of reading it for the first time was half as exciting as that!

This is the book that made me a big fan of Jackie Collins.

I like how she writes about celebrity scandals and power grabbing. I like how she breaks the spirit of the rich and famous. Her works make you wonder about how twisted hollywood really is.

Gino Santangelo is one fine guy in my book. Yet again, I found myself having a crush on a fictional character. His rise from rags to riches (and i mean extreme riches) ahd me rooting for him all the way even if he made the usual mafia-like decisions.

What a great start to a series by Jackie Collins. It is no wonder why she is one of my ultimate favorite authors of all time! I felt like I was watching a movie the whole time I was reading! This story had everything, Crime, sex, drugs, whores, pimps, lust, deceit, revenge, love, backstabbing and friendship. I really enjoyed the time setting of the story, having it begin in the early 20’s I could picture Harlem and the people. This 1st book in the series is based mostly around Gino and his story...more

So, it took my a freakishly long time to finish reading this, but I am so glad I did. I am a huge fan of Jackie Collins, and I think this book will probably be one of my favorites by her. I love how, in this books it spans several decades and not once gets boring, and I love how she mixed in the present day and past into one flowing story. Which is a style she also wrote in her book Deadly Embrace. I have really fallen in love with the Santangelo set of characters and look forward to more in thi...more

‘Expecting conceit they found courtesy. Expecting arrogance they found a man concerned with people’s thoughts and feelings.’

And me - expecting a sweet little story — found an in-your-face, wham bam, bordering-on-vulgar, yet nonetheless exciting mobster tale. Let me tell you, dear little Jackie Collins has got a mouth on her like a truck driver. She frequently drops the f’bomb, hesitates little in calling women C-U-Next–Tuesdays or — most blush-inducing for me because I hate the word — the p word...more

I just re-read this book. The first time I read this book was in the 80's. Second time around was just as good as I remember the first time being. This was the first book I ever read by Jackie Collins and I have been a fan ever since. She had me at the first page of this book and it has been a great ride through every single one of her books since then. There are a few that I have not had a chance to read yet some being her earlier novels and the Thrill and L.A. connections somewhere in the midd...more

The Santangelo saga begins. It all starts from the beginning, when Gino is a little boy, and goes through all the experiences, he went through to build his empire. Gino had it hard, alot of tragic incidents, and no one to back him up, that made him the man with so much motivation the man he had become. It proves it does not matter where you come from you have passion anything is possible.

Lucky is one character you fall in love with, she is her dad inside and out, a women you will not mess with,...more

I must admit I was absolutely shocked by how good this story was. I can't wait to read the second installment about Lucky. It was a very easy read but also had an addicting storyline. I could really see it as a mini series. I know that it was written during the Dallas, Falcon Crest era. It really is a soap opera. However, I highly suspect that there is some aspect of truth behind this novel. It also reminds me of the Godfather saga. Gino is a character that you can both love and love to hate. Th...more

The start of the Lucky Santangelo series is amazing!! I had read Drop Dead Beautiful (book 6 in series) first, upon recommendation from a friend, and am actually glad that I did read that one first and then go back to the beginning. I’m ready to move on to Lucky and look forward to continuing the saga!! Just one interesting point to the author: how can you operate a record player in a blackout? Back in 1977 I doubt there were battery powered devices, especially a record player.

I decided to read this, the very first of the Lucky Santangelo books after having read a more recent Jackie Collins novel in which Lucky appears, and with all the references to her past I wanted to go back to the beginning.
So, was it worth it? Well, yes, though to be frank, when I first started reading it I felt it was cliche ridden and not that well written. And i remember what put me off when i was younger - all the swearing and slang. However i persevered, knowing that Jackie Collins tells a...more

i really liked this book and i am ashmamed of this fact. it was quite possibly the trashiest novel i have ever read.. with that said, i couldn't put the book down.. it was long and you loved how much more you got to get to be involved with the characters. i loved gino and carrie..i give this book two very embarrased thumbs up.. so worth the read, you will feel dirty, but breathless at the end! :)

I really loved this book. Collins creates great characters in Gino The Ram, his daughter named Lucky Santangelo, and a whole bunch of other characters you either love or love to hate. Collins covers several decades in this 800 page novel, and she has great pacing skills throughout this heavy book. But time flies as you read the novel. It's one of those you just can't tear your eyes away from.

Sometimes a gal needs some trash and who better to pick than Jackie Collins?! I first read Collins when I was a very young teenager, and I'm pretty sure I didn't understand *half* of what was going on! This is a whirlwind of c-bombs, pimps and rape - and, somehow, I just could not stop reading. It might be trash, but it's damn entertaining!

The first book I picked up over 20 years ago!! This book has kept me reading!! Jackied has such a discriptive written the book puts you right in her thoughts!! You are actually there feeling all the characters emotions! I LOVE her writtings and have all her books!!!! She never fizzels out and always comes back with a whammy!!!!

The beginning moved a bit slow for my liking, but it picked up and turned out to be a pretty decent book. This would make a great beach read, as it has the right amount of "trash", suspense and romance all wrapped up in one.

I would recommend this to anyone whom has read any of Jackie's other books.

I read this when I was a teenager and had no business reading it. But I loved it. So, maybe my 5 stars are off if I read it again. But, it was made into tv movies and stuff, so the story was actually a good story. Jackie Collins stuff is full of garbage though...good story with a lot of garbage in there.
